By hank73 ·
While I am downloading a file it starts out fine then its starts to drop speed. Sometimes it goes all the way to 0.00kps then I get disconnected from my isp. Sometimes I even get disconnected from isp when just trying to load a page.I am running a 233mmx packard bell with windows95 and I have a 56k modem

Yes please do the above. and try this...if you have a phone or answer machine on the line or pluged into you computer, disconnect them reboot and try download again. i had the same problem on a HP and disconnecting the phone from the back of the computer did it!And sorry about the Packard Bell.

I hate to throw these in, so please don't take it as an insult to your intelligence. That is not intended.

Do you have call waiting turned off?

Does your ISP have an inactivity timeout?

Some ISPs will disconnect you due to inactivity, eventhough you are clearly downloading a file. I think they determine activity by DNS requests, not bytes downloaded. You might try just occaisionally performing a browser refresh or looking up another website during your download to prevent this one.

Sorry for hitting the obvious, but I get bit by the obvious too often!
