downloading a driver

By pardoe6 ·
I needed a cd rom (cheap). I have a 95 windows program. I got a used cdrom - company name is lite-on to try and see if it works-if not, I can return it, but anyway, I guess I need to download a driver for it. So, I went to the lite-on website and proceeded to down load information, but it would almost get done downloading and then say something like illegal parameters or something like that. Anyway, can I download a driver for the lite-on cd rom Model # LTN403 or should I return it and not bother with it. Or should I just go to circuit city and buy one (new) or do you know where I can obtain a good used one????
Thanks, Lois (need to know a.s.a.p.so I can return the used one and get $ back)

downloading a driver

The most accurate answer would be to return the drive and buy a cheap new one that would have tech support from the retailer and the proper drivers on a supplied CD-ROM. But if you only paid ten bucks or so for the used one do the following:
1] Turn off computer, unplug it and ground yourself.
2] Remove cover and install drive.
3] Put computer back together and then turn it on.
4] Windows 95 will detect the new drive and attempt to install generic drivers for it.
5] Follow the onscreen prompts answering the questions as best you can.
6] After complete boot-up, do a proper shut down of the system and reboot again.(sometimes drivers need a fresh reboot to gain full access to the computer, wonderful Windows don't we all love it)
7] Ifthe drive works then you got yourself a cheap cd-rom drive - otherwise return it and get a cheap one from Circut City or Best Buy.
