Downloads are incomplete, changed browser-no improvement

By taryn ·
I've used every version of ie up to 7 with no real problems, but I figured it had to be the browser, so I switched to Firefox. No improvement!
Problems:
When downloading (WinXP PC) online, suddenly all zips and apps (even Flash Player for browser) started showing "incomplete" or as it's called "Corrupt" files. One or two or maybe more small files would be left out. When finished downloading, it would say it completed the right mb's, but when unzipping or trying to install, there would be files missing. Tried "Repair" in WinRAR, no help.
At the same time I noticed images were not showing up completely on sites. Large images would pixel out, or change color. Sometimes the entire page layout would show up wrong. It happened mostly at one site, but now does this on many.
I checked and rechecked for viruses. Nothing. The ISP is just a cable connection, which is fast, so I don't know how it could be that.
I am at a loss for a solution at this point.

Any ideas? Anyone hear of this?
Btw, the graphics card is almost new, the drivers are up-to-date and the monitor is also in excellent shape.

Never have used Outlook

Maybe it could get corrupt anyway?

I was just doing the things you describe above (burning movies to disc, etc. a few days ago to increase hard drive space. :^)

However the other suggestion, running Disk Cleanup (again) made a BIG difference! I just ran it a few days ago, so I don't know why, but it did. The gunk has been piling up, I guess! ;^)

I just visited the graphics intensive site that's causing me the most probs and everything looked as it should! The pics were a little slow, but they showed up without pixelation or distortion! :^D

Thanks for you input.

Jacky, your tip worked!

by taryn In reply to See if this will help

I can't believe it! I just ran Disk Cleanup a few days ago, yet it needed it! Tons of unnecessary files!

Then I restarted, and I was FINALLY able to download the Flash Player for Firefox, PLUS the images all show up on the site I had the most trouble with! They load slow, but the images are as they should be. No more corrupted, pixelated images! :^D

I have no idea why running Disk Cleanup again would finally fix this. Why didn't it fix it last time? Maybe because I was using ie then??

I am SO relieved!! Thanks! :^D

You would be surprised :)

to see the amount of temporary files that will accumulate with just a couple of days browsing. I don't normally run anything at all when I am tidying up my drives or Defragmenting. I even restart the PC in between Burning DVD's. Ha-Ha

It came back!

Not quite so bad, but it's breaking up the pics again on graphic-intensive sites. I haven't had a chance to try a variety of downloading.
I am running disk cleanup again. <:^(

Yes, applications have to be closed

I even will go into task manager and kill any unneeded processes, and THEN do the cleanup.

Always reboot after.

This will help to speedup the cleanup process

by Jacky Howe In reply to Downloads are incomplete, ...

Copy and paste in between the ==== signs to Notepad and save it to (C:) as cln.cmd and then right click on it and send it to the Desktop as a Shortcut. It will speed up the Cleanup process.

by taryn In reply to This will help to speedup ...

what you are referring to.

I am still trying to fix this problem. I updated my graphics drivers, can't download the mobo chipset drivers though.

Ran Spybot, after running Avast.

Am ready to throw my PC into the river!!!

You said that it was OK

by Jacky Howe In reply to ? Not sure

when you deleted those files, how much space have you left on the drive. What I was referring to was a quick way to free up space on the hard drive to keep you going until you get your new drive, anyway see if this helps.

Click Start, Run and type cmd and press Enter.

at the command prompt type netsh winsock reset and then press ENTER.

It was okay for a day

by taryn In reply to You said that it was OK

Then it was the same as before. I guess I spoke too soon!
I have 16 gb left on my 70 gb Raptorm which is the main drive.
I am not sure which drive to replace. If I replace C (Raptor), I'll have to reinstall Windows and my XP is too out-of-date (SP1). My new drive (320 mb) will be here Wednesday.

I had a feeling it wasn't just disk cleanup that made it work again for a day. Because I am always running disk cleanup. Maintenance I'm good at.
