Dual Core & Quad Core - different clockspeeds?

By Jay Purple ·
Okay, I have 2x core 2s siting on my desk.
One is Dual Core @ 3.2GHz and handles Crysis 1&2 easy.
I just got given a Quad-core @ 2.4GHZ.

Which one would TR members suggest?

Depends on what it is you want to do here

And probably more importantly what you want to run on this CPU.

Older Software isn't as well Optimized for Multi Cores and the same applies to the OS as well. So if it's an older OS and Software the Dual Core @ 3.2 GIG will appear faster but if you are planning on using the Current Generation OS's and Software and probably not any M$ Offerings then the 4 Core at 2.4 GIG will appear faster.

Currently M$ Desktop OS's are not as well optimized for Multi Cores as some other offerings and you can not allocate individual Cores to run certain Applications. Even if you could there is currently no way of knowing just how well the M$ OS actually uses those Extra Cores to begin with so it may slow things down even more.

Confused yet? :^0

Nah, I understand what you mean
I am running win7 Ultimate SP1. I run mostly music and internet applications (winamp and firefox) but occasionally tinker with Crysis Editor and play the occasional game (both old - Homeworld, etc. and new - Crysis 2, Alice 2 etc)

Soon this will be a student PC as I start a course in ICT next year at university... I guess I might as well trial the Quad-core and see for myself :)
