Ed Bott's Microsoft Challenge-- 2/3/2000

By ebott ·
1. When you insert a CD into a Windows 2000 machine, it plays automatically. Other Windows versions make it relatively easy to disable this feature, but it?s buried in Windows 2000. Where?s the switch that turns off AutoPlay once and for all?
2. Windows 2000 includes a handy defrag utility. How do you schedule it to perform a defrag session automatically, at regular intervals?

1. There is no user interface option to enable or disable the Autorun feature. To enable or disable the feature, you must edit the registry. To do so, follow the steps below.
Log onto the PC as the System Administrator.
Change the Autorun value in the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\CDRom
To disable the Autorun feature, change the Autorun value to 0. To enable the Autorun feature, change the Autorun value to 1.
Restart the computer.
NOTE: The above method disables the Autorun feature completely. If you want to disable the feature on a per compact disc basis, you can hold down one of the SHIFT keys while inserting the compact disc.

2. Windows 2000 includes a Disk Defragmenter tool.Although any user can gain access to the Disk Defragmenter console, the ability to analyze or defragment a volume requires administrator privileges.

Disk Defragmenter was designed primarily for stand-alone workstations or servers whose users have the ability to log

press shift key before loading the cd disk to
temporarily disable the autoload.another work
around but before implementing it backup first your necessary files; highlight HKEY_LOCAL_ MACHINE /System/CurrentControlSet/Services/CDROM. edit autorun; set to 0 (zero)
with regards to defrag utility use third party application to perform defragmentation such as diskkeeper lite.since w2k does not have a feature to schedule defrag you have to manually start the utility if you prefer to use the w2k built in utility it's command line component are dfrgfat.exe and dfrgntfs.exe.

Right-click My Computer and select Properties to open the
System Properties dialog box. On the Device Manager tab,
click the plus sign next to CDROM and select your
CD-ROM drive. Click the Properties button, select the
Settings tab, and deselect Auto Insert Notification. Click
OK, then click Close and restart Windows 98. The next
