Weekend was ups and downs
by jdclyde · about 17 years, 8 months ago
In reply to Edited out
First of all, it was not my weekend to have the boys, BUT their godfathers son (my best bud since we were 2) was having an over night Birthday party. So I got to go pick up the boys and take them to the party. Eight 11 to 14 year olds, running and screaming, what fun! About 1:30am I called it quits, went home and got some sleep.
The EX had insisted that she would pick them up from the party, even though I offered to save her the drive. At the last minute she told them to tell me that I would pick them up and could have them for the day. (Jays Outdoors was having their “sidewalk sale”) So I picked up the boys, and we drove out to Clare.
Got Thing One a used compound bow all setup, for about $180. Got Thing Two a pair of nice boots for $99. They didn’t having anything in my size left, so nothing for me! 🙁
Dropped them back off at the loveshack, and then mowed the lawn.
Sunday, got the boys early so we could play a round of golf. Thing one beat me by a stroke (yes, he is grounded again!) Thing two hasn’t been going as often, and it shows in his game. When it is a spir of the moment thing of “lets go play a round”, he has been passing. When it gets him out of his mothers house, he says yes everytime. B-)
Did some shopping for their goodies for the week, then went home and played video games with them until about 1am.
What a grand weekend.

The weekend
by tig2 · about 17 years, 8 months ago
In reply to Edited out
Any one who knows me, knows how I spend my weekend. We walked- 10 miles on Saturday and 6 on Sunday. My team usually meets at 8:00 a.m. but we were watching the weather forecasts and decided to get there early. We got 2 miles in before the team showed up both days so we were able to leave early. This was a good thing because it was nearly 100 degrees both days. And the humidity was nearly 70%. Breathing wasn’t the easiest thing to do!
I also got my second pair of shoes ordered. Need two pair for the 3 Day- that way I can switch between them. This week I get to break in the new ones.
The rest of the weekend we just tried to get caught up- nothing gets done any more. When did life get so busy?
Don’t forget to take your water when you walk- especially in the heat. And some kind of sport drink- replace the eletrolytes that you will lose.

Check out Sports Authority or REI

You can get powdered Gatorade- I use it if I have no other choice. It is easy to carry and you can mix it to your taste. I find the prebottled to be WAY too sweet. One of my team buys an eight ounce of the premade and cuts it with an equal amount of water.
There are a number of brands on the market. My favourite is something called Smart Water. It is water with electrolytes and no sugar or flavour. It tastes just like water. I can get it for about $1.79 for a 1.5 litre bottle. Since I have refillable bottles, that works well for me.
The Sparkling Water has a certain amount of salt in it but you don’t get the potassium bicarbonate, calcium chloride or magnesium chloride that you also need. An electrolyte replacement is essential especially as you walk longer distances.
Edited just for you!

Apple Juice
by jamesrl · about 17 years, 8 months ago
In reply to Edited out
Way back when I was a competitive runner (late 70s early 80s) I read an interesting study in Runners world that suggested that by mixing apple juice 50/50 with plain water, you could get a good palatable substitute for Gatorade. I did it myself for years, it helped me through a double metric century (200 kms) on a bicycle.
Apple juice has more potassium and less sodium than gatorade.
Just for fun I googled it and found this:
http://www.davedraper.com/forum/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/54354/Main/54354
They suggest 60/40 water/apple juice.
The nice thing about apple juice is that you can get it just about anywhere, and its cheap.

Too much juice and your body will slow down its absorbtion while it handle the carbs. Too little juice and you wont get enough potassium and sodium.

Let me know how your walk goes

I know that for me the first big milestone was the five mile. We just got back from walking 6.
Saturday is the 18 mile all day marathon. Followed by a 15 mile all day marathon. At least we’ve done a 15 before- just not right after an 18!
I’ll post Sunday night and let you know if an old fat woman can really do this thing!
Remember- stay hydrated. Over 6 miles, you should be drinking approximately 2 litres of fluid- 1 litre water, 1 litre electrolyte replacement. I know you can do this!

Cider, not juice
by jdclyde · about 17 years, 8 months ago
In reply to Edited out
the cider hasn’t had all the good stuff filtered out of it, so it have more than natural sugar left in it for you.
Of course, drinking lots of apple cider/juice, even deluted, can make you spend much more time in the mens room! Learn your body, and don’t try ANYTHING new on days that matter!
That is the same mistake golfers make. Trying out a new grip or stance in a game instead of at the driving range.
I WILL give this a shot though James, as I do lose a lot out walking a round of golf. Everyone else is fine, and I will be soaked from head to toe. Guess it is from carrying around just a LITTLE bit more weight than the rest of the group?
I buy gatorade by the flat, and keep that in hand at all times, hoping the boys (and me) will drink THAT or water, instead of soda. Between that and the walking the rounds of golf, I have lost a pant size in the last month! Woo woo! Had to even buy a new belt!

Personally
by jamesrl · about 17 years, 8 months ago
In reply to Cider, not juice
I love cider and drink it a fair amount – buy it at the farmers market.
But I wouldnt recommend it for the sports drink replacement.
What I used was 100% apple juice from a can – yes its been filtered. The cider would have to be much more diluted.
And be careful, some of the apple juice makers now sell an apple “drink” which is less 75% juice. It is packaged to look like 100% juice to the casual observer.
Another trick I used to do is to fill my water bottle with ice and fill the space with apple juice. At first, before you have lost alot due to sweat, you are drinking cold juice. As time wears on, the ice melts, diluting the juice. I would not do this for running or cycling as you need the water for hydration sooner. But for golf or hiking its fine.
I carry a little extra too, but I find hiking or golfing not too bad, if I keep hydrated. I take my kids for hikes and they run ahead for the first part, but after about 5 miles, they get tired and I just keep going. I’m building their endurance. Nice thing is that there are lots of interesting places to hike that are not that far from me.

I take TWO bottles. I freeze one solid, so I will have something cold later on in the day after the first one runs dry.
Got two holders on my bike, and we are starting to ride longer rides as they have been building more “rail trails” where you can ride on a paved trail for an easy 80 miles each way if you choose. (old train tracks, torn out and paved).
When golfing, I have a small cooler I strap onto my golf bag. Keep a good mix of water, gatorade, kilians, jager/redbull. For the life of me, I can’t figure out why my game isn’t getting better? :0
I will try the juice tonight when we walk 9 after I get back into town. 😀 (would rum go good with apple?)

Tried it on yesterday’s training. Worked really well! Still on the sweet side to me but at least it wasn’t sport drink. I HATE that stuff!
I tried it at about 60/40 and may try thinning it a bit more. I really hate the sweet- especially when it is hot so I don’t know that I would try any stronger than that.
Really appreciate the link, thanks again!

You move out of the way before laughing at your wife. I learned that trick about 30 minutes after meeting my future bride, but it’s amazing how many I see that haven’t mastered that technique.
I was just now diddling aroung in the list of TR top 100, and I noticed that 1AW and Julian are still there, in the top 50 no less. Curious that they maintain such lofty positions, especially 1AW, since it looks like she’s had next to no activity since May.
Odd thing is that when I took a month off a while ago, I dropped from the low 60’s to the low 70’s. As I posted more and more, I was carefully monitoring my position. When I hit 70, I anticipated that I would next move to 69, but the TR PTB must realize the purity in my heart, because that same day I jumped to #68.
And since we’re talking about TR rankings and people, does anyone have info on two of my favorites? Stargazerr and jck have completely dropped out of sight on the site depsite my citing them as Contacts. It sucks to lose track of folks in this forum. You never know if they just got bored, if they had all their typing fingers severed in a sawmill accident, if they were hit by a bus, or if their moms finally caught them.

In reply to You a smaht man
I also noticed that dispite Julians huff and puff about moving on, had been posting last week. Too funny.
JCK, as he departed he had mentioned something about a medical condition, so I am not sure if that took him out or if he got tired of getting beat up on. He had gone into some of the political discussions where he could not logically talk his way out of a paperbag, and even the people that were pushing the same “side” of the discussion had no use for him. Between Absolutely and Max, jck got pummled. He should have stayed with the beer discussions.
Gazzer, I had been wondering that last week. I hope it doesn’t have to do with family from that bombing recently in India. That is where she was orginially from, right?
1UNaw, your guess (while purer) is as good as mine on how she is still in the top 100, unless everyone below her have not been active in the discussions at all. It is summer, ya know. Could it be there are only 10 active members on TR? :0
But then again, the matrix for calculating top 100 is still pooched, as you still see people with NO activity in the top 10. Notice the number one and three. Yeah, they are top members. Right. Sure.
I have been more pre-occupied lately, and dropped down a few notches. Surely have not been as busy as the number one?
That list should be removed, as it just makes TR techs look stupid. Anyone that looks at the activity of the people on that list quickly see that it hasn’t been worth a damn in a long time.

Of course I can do better but it’s too hot…
Chicken Phal is the hottest curry on the standard Brit-Indian menu. It is usually (and traditionally) eaten by macho idiots after ten prints of lager. Watching them eat it is one of the funniest sights to see in a good curry house at 11:30pm Saturday nights.
It is also fed to lippy American tourists – “Oh, no, it’s not hot. The sauce is mostly tomatoes”. :p
😀
Standard practice is to put a loo-roll in the freezer for the following day.

The point of Phals
by neilb@uk · about 17 years, 8 months ago
In reply to Edited out
is to demonstrate that you are a macho idiot. The trick is to drink lots of lager while eating which, of course, makes the heat worse. I don’t like them, myself, too much chili powder makes them taste a bit metallic to me. I only know one person who eats them because he likes them.
Note that I really only feed unexpected phals to people who really tick me off.
So, for now, I would probably suggest a Madras or Jalfrezi (my favourite) for hubby, the Jalfrezi having chunks of green chili, and maybe a Balti for you.
I’ve got to get you to Brick Lane first, though, and then choose the restaurant. As most are Muslim-run, we get to take our own beer and wine

ok, Monday moaning is very appropriate.
Weekend starting with Friday:
Friday: emergency meeting called at 4pm Friday afternoon with “power” people on multiple projects affected by issues and lots of lack of communication. Didn’t actually get home until after 8pm. That is when I got to walk and feed the puggies, play with them, and log on to TR (at least I think I did, but that might have been the work computer I logged in to, to do more work).Saturday: Did my banking which was 3 weeks behind, paid bills, and all that fun stuff, then logged in to work for a few hours. Then picked up my mom because her apartment doesn’t have good air conditioning and it was going to be HOT this weekend. So, she stayed with me with her dog and my dogs. Went back to work on Dissertation for a few hours, then went back to work on work stuff. Went to bed around 1am.
Sunday: Took Mom food shopping, cleaned house, bathed dogs, and logged in to work for the rest of the day. Took Mom back to her home around 6pm and then came home to continue working. Did some TR stuff last night, but worked until about 2am.
Monday: I was in work by 7am to continue and I am catching up on TR while running some tests in the background and scheduling meetings. Ugh. It never ends.

You don’t post Miscellaneous discussions in the technical forums. The fact that you are trying to insist on promoting an obvious mispost only continues to identify you as inappropriate. As a thread can’t be moved, NeverBusted did you a favour by moving the discussion to a place where it could be found and responded to.
You really need a grip, followed shortly by a clue, pal. The community will not adapt to you.

Surely humour is allowed or does there have to be a category for that as well?

I suspect because of all the recent trolling on the site

In reply to I Was
and because of the recent misunderstanding that everyone is just a bit sensitive. I tend to prefer giving someone the benefit of the doubt, but I have to admit. I did believe you were trying to join in and then I read your response and it seemd nasty. So, I was on the “I am not sure list” Thus the post you just responded to.
We always welcome information. My suggestion and that is all it is, would be to try and keep things on a knowledge/professional approach for a bit and give people a chance to see you really want to be a member of the community. If you wish to post humor – give an identifying signal that it is humor. When I first joined the community I would make certain I used emoticons and other symbols to let people know.
We all interpret what we read based on our experiences and our current frame of mind. Just keep trying to be constructive and friendly and people will come around.
Good Luck.

Pretty good weekend
by jellimonsta · about 17 years, 8 months ago
In reply to Edited out
I have a terminally ill aunt (who is only 34) in the UK right now, so I may be making a trip there soon. 🙁
In order to get my mind off it, my wife thought we should get outside. So, our foster daughter went to respite for the weekend. On Friday night we took our 3 ? yr old daughter out to dinner and watched a movie. On Saturday the in-laws picked up our daughter and took her to their place for a sleep over so my wife and I could have a night to ourselves. 🙂
So, on Saturday night we went out for a curry and went to the IMAX to watch Superman Returns in 3-D (not too bad a movie). On Sunday we met up with the in-laws at a state park in the middle of our homes (we live 85 miles apart), and met up with our daughters God parents and their 6 month old for an afternoon in the sun and in the water. 🙂
All in all, it was a nice weekend. And my cell phone did not go off once!! 🙂 -

Pretty great weekend
by rob mekel · about 17 years, 8 months ago
In reply to Edited out
so to say. 🙂
Started off on Friday with a nice dinner/musical in The Hague 🙂 (actually it was Scheveningen, but who of you foreigners can pronounce that one correctly :^0 ) The Lion King. Great show!! Then on to the boulevard of Scheveningen had some great drinks and enjoyed the fireworks show from the “pier”. It still was a 18 C when we started home at 2:00 am on Saturday. 🙂 That much for cool (lol) But it was the lowest temp it got all weekend.
On Saturday we got some friends over for a nice barbeque, so we took the whole day to make some nice side dishes to the salmon, Kingsize prawns, T-bone steak and spare-ribs.
The sunday we took for a nice spin through the dunes near Zandvoort and IJmuiden and some nice cold drinks on the beach. And what a view 🙂 special as there were a lot of people partying at the beachclubhouses on the beach. Great enjoyment. It went on even better when we participated in the party. 🙂All in all a real great weekend.

My youngest’s 7th birthday. After the usual bonanza of opening cards and presents, we took her and her big sis to Woburn Abbey Safari Park (She’s never been before).
The look on her face when she saw all the animals roaming free(ish) was priceless.
Oh, and the monkeys didn’t rip the c*** out of my car either; so that was a bonus!

Called out Saturday morning to fix warrantee equipment for which I don’t have parts & neither does the local service center. No spare equipment either. Store manager not happy.
Spent 10-1/2 hours on Sunday moving the pharmacy in another one of my stores: 7 PCs, 2 registers, 3 printers, fax, 4 phones, and asociated hardware & peripherals. Had to wait until they closed to start…it got late early. The good news? All the cable was already pulled & terminated.
Did get to have Sunday brunch at my sister-in-law’s.

here anything over 8 hours isovertime, by law
and every time that the total earned is equal to 8 hours in overtime, the rate increases..
after a 12 hour shift it’s double time, after 16 hours it’s triple time…at 18 hours it’s quadruple time.by the labour laws. the employer pays by choice, or pays by court order.
I had one employer screw the overtime payments up on me, three months after leaving, I got a paycheque for 2 grand in overtime pay that they had not paid out properly.
[ friday ]

monday, had 2 grand in back employment insurance payments show up in the mail.was a good weekend. 😀

Anything over 40 should be OT for hourly workers
by nicknielsen · about 17 years, 8 months ago
In reply to Over time? What’s that – it is all straight time
It’s required by Federal law. Unless you are in one of those “exempt” jobs. This article (http://shrunklink.com?hsr) on the latest updates to overtime law unfortunately identifies “certain computer workers” as exempt. 🙁
It also specifies that you must “regularly exercise discretion and independent judgment with respect to matters of significance” as a primary duty of your job. Maybe you can point out to your boss that since he second-guesses all your decisions, you aren’t really being allowed to “exercise discretion.” 😉

July 20, 2006 at 12:41 pm #3277946
Yeah, well unfortunately it is in the contract
by j.lupo · about 17 years, 8 months ago
In reply to Anything over 40 should be OT for hourly workers
that I signed when I took the job. And yes it is an exempt status for this position. Of course it wasn’t suppose to go over 40 a week and it wasn’t suppose to be a tech lead position.
The project is in the Red and so everyone is killing themselves. Of course I got to work from home today and I get to park in the company parking garage which other contractors aren’t allowed to do. So maybe they are making it up to me in other ways. I would prefer the pay and the parking garage. 🙂

Got off work Friday, went straight to beer and grocery store so that I wouldn’t have to do it Saturday morning. Played WoW. Fed the kids dinner. Went back to playing WoW. The wife made it in late, her usual 3 hour drive was stretched to 6, we talked for a few minutes, she went to bed. I went back to playing WoW. Got up Saturday morning, played WoW until the afternoon. Turned the computer off for several hours and interacted with wife and kids till the evening, then played WoW until my back hurt so bad from sitting at my desk all day I had to take drugs, drink beer, go to bed. Sunday morning, made coffee, played WoW. Wife left for Norfolk at five, the kids and I drove to Delaware to pick up my oldest son. Got home, played WoW.
If I can just break level 40, I can take a break from the game,,, for a few days. -

my home Internet is back on line – though I don’t know for how long.
It was down on Monday and I called it in when I got home. Instead of a Mumbai call-centre, I got the local tech centre but the guy on the other end had a Scots accent so broad, he might have been talking Russian. I’d much rather have had Mumbai.
Anyway, after a half-hour’s diagnostics:
Do what?
Sorry, didn’t catch that.
How do you spell that?
Oh, T-H-R-E-E. Ah…
…No good, so Jock McSporran arranged for an engineer “some time between 8am and 12am Wednesday”
Got up Tuesday morning and it was working. It died again, unattended, at around 1pm. Lucky I didn’t cancel the engineer.
Sat around this morning until noon – couldn’t work, no VPN – and then phoned Head Office. Because my modem had popped back on they’d cancelled the engineer; they called me once (I wasn’t in) and considered that acceptable behaviour. “Slightly unreasonable”, I said to anyone who’d listen (took about half an hour to work my way up the food chain above plankton) although not in those words.
Carried on up the food chain when I got to work.
When I got home tonight there was an engineer waiting and the bloody modem was working again. I bribed him with a beer to run full diags. His explanation is that our current heatwave is affecting the cable junction boxes “because they’re painted dark” and they have workmen going around painting some of them (the ones in full sun) in lighter colours.
Missed my lunchtime walk.
Grr.
