Establishing A Netmeeting connection

By Ibrahim Yahya ·
I've already installed ILS Server in a Windows NT Server 4.0. But however the communication can only be established in Local Area Network. I can see all the user name in the directory but could not communicate with them if they are outside the rangeof our Local Area Network. My Server was behind a router and a firewall.

1.) What is the necessary configuration should I make in my server?

2.) What the user need to configure?

Establishing A Netmeeting connection

Try and see if you can use netmeeting and connect directly with one of your external users... ie make a call not using the ILS server. I remember when I tried putting up an ILS server that its only purpose was to show who was online, the communications never really happened through that server, but through the computer that made the meeting. Its possible that the computer hosting the meeting can't talk through the firewall.

If the WAN user's are using a dialup to connect to the internet, from LAN I will be able to call them but they can't call me. But if the user's are in another LAN than the communication cannot be establish.

If they are going thru NAT then you have to create a NAT mapping which will map the Public IP address to the private IP address. Also you will have to make sure that the ILS server is giving for the remote users the maped IP address and not the private, Which I think is immposible.

After reading your comment on answer six.
I now see for sure that its a problem because you are using NAT.

I've tried to map the NAT with the public IP address and Private IP address. But it's still doesn't work. Now I'm not sure weather I've map it correctly. Please advice. Thanks

Did you make sure (after mapping that is) that when you connect from the outside you are using the public IP address and not the private thru the ils server?

It's seems like Netmeeting does support NAT. I've tried to use quiet a number of different combination but its still doesn't work. I can connect by using a direct call by entering my public IP address directly into the place call field but I cannot connect when using the directory services to made the connection. Do you still think that I've missed configured my NAT? Please advice.

As my last answer stated. When you connect form the outside after mapping it will work using the public IP address. However if you will use the ILS server to lookup someone in the directory so you can make a netmeeting call its not going to work andI dont think there is a way to make it work. The reason is b/c the ILS server only has the private IP address of that computer and not the public mapped IP address. And there is no way (as far as I know) to tell an ILS server the mapped public IP address of the computer since ILS (and the local computer, thats what NAT is for) have no idea about the public mapped IP address.

Even though it doesn't help me, I think you deserve to be reward with the point and in future if you have the solution to make the connection in the netmeeting by using private ip address and public in the ILS directory services do please email me at ibrahim_singapore@yahoo.com.sg Thank You.
