Excess Sap Traffic on 4.11

By collins_ms ·
I'm running netware 4.11 intranetware SBE with groupwise 5.2 and novell 3.21 clients. We also have a snap server with bindery emulation. Over the last month, using an analyzer alot of sap traffic (802.2) is being generated between devices. Network traffic has been well over 40%or higher FOR EXTENDED PERIODS OF TIME. I don't believe that I need to run the 802.2 frame type in 4.11. Can I trun off this frame type?

Excess Sap Traffic on 4.11

by Jim_MacLachlan In reply to Excess Sap Traffic on 4.1 ...

Turning off 802.2 saved me a lot of traffic.

I found a lot of extra SAP traffic on my 4.11 network & it turned out to be the NT Workstations. If an NT WS ever has the Microsoft Novell client on it, SAP is turned on and can only be turned off by manually adding this to the registry:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Rpc]
"AdvertiseRpcService"="No"

You must leave SAP turned on for Win9x machines (at least with the 2.5 Novell Client) or they will not automatically login, however,they don't continually broadcast the way an NT WS does.
