Exchange 2000 in a 2003 Domain

By razz2 ·
A client has migrated from a 2000 Domain to a 2003 domain by
using 2 new servers. The addition of the 2 new servers went fine
as did their promotion to ADC's. The old 2 controllers will be
demoted in the end. The current setup is as follows:

ADC01 - New 2003 AD Controller

ADC02 - New 2003 AD Controller

PDC01 - Old 2000 DC still running AD for now but will be
retired

MailServer - Exchange 2000 and 2000 AD Controller. The server
will be demoted but stay running 2000 server and exchange
2000

All is running fine but now comes the Exchange System Manager
question. It must be installed to admin exchange from AD User
& Computers but can the exchange 2000 System Manager be
installed on 2003 server? I know about Exchange SP3 adding
2003 support but what about installing it? You can't install
Exchange 2000 on 2003 server so how do you admin it? You
can't install 2003 Adminpak on server 2000. Catch 22?

I am assuming the only way is from an XP workstation with 2003
Adminpak and Exchange System Manager but then, according to
the MS KB, you can't have outlook on the same box as any
exchange component. (OK, Outlook 2000 and 2002 have worked
and the client has 2002).

What about Exchange 2003 System Manager on the 2003 ADC
manageing the Ex2000 on Win2000? The issue there is licensing
if they don't have Ex2003.

Thanks for any ideas.

Yep, I figured that was the only way but of course that requires the client owning Ex2003. They may buy the CD but wait on buying the full CALs yet just so they can use ESM. Then to upgrade thewy would just need CALs. I checked already with the Usage Rights paper and ESM can be installed as often as you want if you own the software. The ESM alone is not freely distributable (sp?). Really they should make just the ESM available as a separate download.

Thanks CG IT!
