Exchange not able to send to AOL

By MCPKen ·
My exchange server is not able to send email to AOL.COM. My users are able to receive email from AOL. When email is sent to AOL, it goes in the outbound mail queue and then leaves. But the AOL recipient receives no email. The event logs on the Exchange server say "a new SMTP connection has been made to host 205.188.156.164(for AOL.COM)." I need to find a solution for this. The person who provides the right solution will get all the points.

I have had this problem before. It is frustrating, but then again so is AOhelL
Okay first all make sure you are on the current version and service pack, not that that is your problem but it will quite the people that think it is. Then try the suggestion in Answer number one, more than likley and this was the case for me, AOL is blocking/filtering your domain or your ISPs blobk of IP addreses. I was using Verio/Best at the time. I don't think that this problem is with your Exchange server but there is a way to test that, there is a tool out there that allows you to send relay mail through your ISPs (and your ISP only) mail servers. Complete the above and if AOL or you ISP won't help you find out your ISPs mail server addresses and send me an e-mail.

Thank you all who put in your input on this problem. Your suggestions helped me to find the solve the problem. I changed ISP from Cox Communications, which has horrible customer service and prices, to Telepacific. Thereby changing the IP of my mail server, and assureing that I had the DNS reverse mapping set up correctly. AOL accounts are now getting email consistantly.
THANK YOU
Ken

I don't think it is an Exchange problem--it is AOL. We are having a problem sending to AOL through our email, b/c our ISP uses the same 'thing' as AOL. I can't remember what the name of it is, but I contacted our ISP who contacted the channel provider. The problem has since been solved.

From the way it sounds, either AOL is blocking your domain, or cannot find your domain when it tries to go back and locate it. Some mail servers trace the domain an e-mail says it is from and see if there's actually a mail server, so you're not spoofing mail from spammer@my-mail-server.com or something like that. If you're sending as testuser@mydomain.com, and AOL's mail server does a DNS query for mydomain.com, and can't find it, it may very well drop the message completely, and that might also explain why you're not getting an NDR.

We had this problem as well. I was not involved in the entire solution but the solution involved a reverse lookup in our DNS server and contacting aol so that our mail server was recognized.

Here are some other SMTP servers that AOL has. You can specify that all mail destined for AOL.COM be forwarded to one of these servers. Try them until you find a working one for you.
152.163.224.33 through 152.163.224.37 and
152.163.224.65 through 152.163.224.69

This may not fix your problem, but it might help.
