Exchange will try to deliver its mail using smtp, by default it will try to find the mx record of the receiver using dns.
Assuming that you have exchange 5.5, you might want to check the forward all mail to “smtphost.inter.net” (try to find your own isp’s smtp settings !) setting in the internet mail connector.
Otherwise make sure that the dns settings of your server are correct, and that it has access to the internet dns servers (when behind a firewall.
In exchange 2000 you have to browse to the virtual smtp connector, and there you can set the properties.

This is easily tested using a telnet to port 25, and issuing a helo, mail from:, mail to:,
data, and a . to end.
You have to be carefull of tYpOS though it does not echo the commands you type.

Once you can send email from your smtp session, yur exchange should work fine.

When outgoing mail on an exchange 2000 server still does not work, again use the telnet method, and when you see a relaying for “address” prohibited, check your relaying settings in the virtual smtp connector, and change them to yur ip range.

      Good Hunting.

It seems i did not read the question very well, i thougt you could receive email, but not send it. My mistake.
If you do not want to change isp’s you have to get a third party pop3 to smtp utility, which will empty your pop3 boxes, and resend it using smtp so exchange can handle them.
There are some good utils for this on the market, you might want to try :
        http://www.chimera.co.nz/

Otherwise you might want to check the c-net, zdnet, and all others, for the keyword pop3, and more will show up, varying from 20 dollars to very much money.

Remember if you have a large site, it’s better to change isp to one that supports bsmtp or etrn.

        Good luck

You may have to change ISPs. Many ISPs that handle POP3 email services do not provide SMTP services. Also, even if they do, if they don’t provide a backup mail server, when your Exchange server is off-line (i.e., not connected to the Internet), then all of your email will be returned to the sender immediately. If your ISP is hosting your domain, though, and you are using their DNS servers, you may be able to get them to simply add an MX record to their DNS server for your Exchange server, and this would allow you to send mail. However, you will not be able to RECEIVE email from your POP3 mailboxes through your Exchange server. Also, you don’t mention whether you have set up the Internet Mail Connector on your Exchange server. This service has to be set up on your server so that it can forward your outgoing email to your ISP. Feel free to email me (synergy@synoffsys.com) if you need additional help on this. Hope this helps!

You just need to install a Internet Mail Service (IMS) thats it! Your ISP side have no problem, you can use X.400 connector for internet mail or TCP connector, x.400 connector supports many e-mail system, did u configure your TCP/IP stack of the Exchange?
You have to install Authorative Domain Name System and configure the DNS for incoming mail server like:
      domain.com IN MX 10 mailserver.domain.com
Note: In Exchange Configuration your incoming MTA record should-be an IP address, remote MTAname should-be * password field must be blank.

      hi…
Hope you have configured IMS on Exchange Server 5.5 so that you can send mail to anyone outside, in dialing options select the dialer which u r using to connect to ISP and then in domain type u r ISP mail server ip address, this help in sending out mails. To receive pop3 mails, as such Exchange Server 5.5 does not have this option inbuilt
u need to have a dedicated IP address from your ISP and then you can start receiving incoming mails, else you can use some third party tools like popbeamer and start downloading and will automatically distribute to the users who have account in ur exchange server. This shud solve your problem. for further queries do visit
http://www.msexchange.org, it will help you to certain level.

What type of connection do you have to your ISP ?? If you have a dialup or ISDN you may need to get a third party piece of software that will automatically check for mail on your ISP’s server. When we had this type of connection we used POP3Gate. However if you have a dedicated connection like a T1 you will have to ask your isp to push your mail to you.

On our T1 we had our ISP give us a dedicated IP Address for mail and configured thier DNS to push the mail to us. But it sounds like you need to talk to your ISP and come up with the right configuration and work together at this point.

If I am off base here or you need further assistance email me.
