Explorer Crash: Access Violation
LockedThe error listed below typically happens upon launching or exiting a
number of different applications. It doesn’t seem to make any
difference what application you’re launching or exiting (including most
of the MS Office 97 apps, GroupWIse, a terminal emulation package we
use, explorer, IE4 or 5, Netscape 4.x, Programmer’s File Editor, even
notepad sometimes!!), nor does it seem to matter which service pack you’re running (3, 4, 5, or 6). When it happens, you get the error dialog box listed
below, your systray icons are emptied, and whatever apps you have in
your startup group launch themselves over again. When you look in the
event viewer, one of the messages you see is from winlogon stating “The
shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted.” Here’s the
error message:explorer.exe
Exception:access violation(0xc0000005, address: 0x30002182)The error doesn’t seem to be fatal, but it’s extremely annoying in that
whatever explorer or “find” windows you might have had opened
