Fill in the blank – I come to TR because __________
Lockedby jdclyde · about 17 years, 10 months ago
What is it that brings you to TR, day after day? (some more than others is seems).
Is it to research something and then back to work?
Is it to look through the downloads?
Is it in response to one of the email newsletters?
Is it to talk about the latest changes in the tech field?
Is it for a break from your busy day with tech, to converse with other like-minded techs?I personally go back and forth. My biggest problem with the TQ&A’s is most of them have the correct answer by the time I get in them, and I don’t feel like saying “yeah, what bfilmfan/chaz/srg/dpetrak (fill in blank) said” It is still interesting to read through them.
Then there is the ever-loving water cooler. 😀
How about it?

It could be that sometimes we just need a sanity check.. (see, I’m not that crazy)
I do get some usefull info here (a lot actually)
We need to get a feel of what other (hopefully) like minded people are up to (and a consencious of thought)

And the tasty snacks.
Actually, it’s the conversations that go on in the Misc part that keep me here. I like reading other points of view on issues. Espcially when presented by intellegent, thoughtful people who take the time out to discuss the concerns and issues of the day.
Oh, and I like reading your stuff too, jd.

In reply to Fill in the blank – I come to TR because __________
I come to TR because I use it for research, occaisionally to download, sometimes because of something in a newsletter, to read the articles, get answers, occaisionally post an answer. Oh, and hang out at the water cooler.
TR is a place where for the most part I will find professionals in the field with whom I can have a conversation and mostly not have to apologise for using words with too many syllables. “There’s no place like 127.0.0.1” makes sense to people here and I am not constantly excusing myself for using my brain.
More lively conversations at the watercooler are interesting and the feedback is always a good read. There are a variety of people here who are capable of clear reasoned thought. I value that- even if I don’t agree with the opinion being expressed.
In short, TR provides an alternative to mindless TV, boring people and banal conversation. The best of all worlds!

In reply to Fill in the blank – I come to TR because __________
I guess that I like to hear about others horror
stories, and add some of the ones I’ve experienced. My background is in any thing you
plug into the wall for power, that’s the
consumer end, and the commerical end from
high voltage switchgear(substations) to
assembly line controllers and robots. I’ve
traveled the world and compared experiences
with others from just about everywhere..
I’ve even learned from others about certain
aspects of my own job, and offered my views
to others to enlighten them. I believe I get
more out than I put in, but I will offer only
what I know, experienced, and compare others
offerings to mine.
Yes, unless I can sit in front of the screen
all day, I’ll always be behind the curve when
it comes to providing answers to Tech Q&A first.
I do like to read others replies, and try not
to repeat others answers, but provide another
angle to the problem, and maybe provide some
other missed clues to the problems presented. -

The nice thing about even the heated discussions is that except for mostly people new to the board, most bring good information to back up what they have to say. Almost like a real discussion! 😀

Light joke
by oz_media · about 17 years, 10 months ago
In reply to Here in TR?
I guess it has two meanings really. I was joking that only only come here because nobody talks to me….in real life. 🙂
But really I think we all come here, in part, because it’s someone to talk to. Not the people we work with and see all day, but the people we talk with, try to figure out, are intrigued by, are offended by, etc.
Actually, while I work for a large US/Canadian company, I share an office with only one guy (friend) that we opened in Vancouver as a satellite for them. Looks like a warehouse and full Vancouver operation coming up though, so maybe I will have other people to talk to soon. Not that that’s always good, of course.
But thanks for the kind words all the same. 🙂

Keep the Quit, Oz
by tig2 · about 17 years, 10 months ago
In reply to Should reward yourself
I quit on 2/24 because of an endurance event I’m doing in August. Being an old fart, I knew I couldn’t walk 60 miles as a smoker.
I find that the walking helps considerably- I haven’t had any weight gain *phew!* and I have learned how to breathe. Very different expereince!
I used the nicotine replacement dodge- seems to have worked. A friend shared with me that it isn’t the nicotine that you crave. When it gets tough, recognise that you really just want your habit back. When I understood that, I was better able to determine what I thought I got from my habit and find another way to get that need met.
Keep up the good work! I’m pulling for you!

oh, you do surprise me! :p Sorry, babz, you asked for that one! 😡
Honest answers? All of the above. One of the few sites that “has it all” in the same place. I found this place by accident whilst researching, and signed up for newsletters. Then found some interesting white papers, so downloaded some of those….then hooked up with Geek Trivia (fatal!) and consequently found the discussion board. Even more fatal! Hung around on the outskirts for three months (giggling all over the place at some of the posts, too!) before jumping right into the Divorce Thread.
And it just snowballed from there.
The attractions here for me are numerous:
I don’t have to explain everything that I write as I would have to, to a non-geek. It’s a place where I can use non-user speak, if you will.
We are all similar to a certain extent – it’s always a conversation/post with like-minded people insofar as we’re all in the IT community as a whole, no matter which section or part.
This is world wide. I’ve “met” up with a lot of people I would never have otherwise known, and believe it or not, I’m grateful for that.
(Yes, ok, I admit it! You can frame that one! :8} )
This is my first stop, religiously, when I’m researching
This is my first and only stop, religiously, if I’m in trouble (I mean websites, not people!)
And I’m found primarily in the water cooler area, because that’s my favourite place to be.
I can snuggle up in the gutter with the rest of you and feel instantly at home!!! 😀
Seriously, I enjoy this place; I enjoy the people; I enjoy the camaraderie, if that doesn’t sound too twee. Oh, and the Friday Yuk, of course….

The divorce discussion was kind of my turning point. I was here occasionally, but more for the tech, and while you recognised who the regulars were, they were just screen names for the most part. A lot stepped up and gave a hand. They became real people. (imagine that?) I got rid of one problem (the ex-wife) and took on another problem (my TR addiction). A fair trade anyday.

In reply to sic ‘er, jd, sic ‘er!!
How did Leee rate one so quick? She works here, that’s how. All TR employees get a free mug with sign-on. Heck, sMoRTy71 has a pile of them on his desk.
Sadly, GG, we can’t enter you into our sweepstakes (do we still do those?), and the last time we tried to mail a ceramic mug international, it cost us a small fortune and it arrived as a fine silicate powder. Thank you, international parcel carriers.
An article of clothing…THAT’s another story. Private message me an American shirt size (S/M/L/XL), a shipping address, and a contact number, and I’ll see about finagling you a TR logo-shirt. They’re even more rare than mugs, and we usually reserve them for overseas members. (And to anatgonize JD, with whom I won’t share your sartorial particulars.)

I’d just lllluuuurrrrvvvveee a Men of TR calendar!
So – to ensure this gets underway, why don’t we start nominating the 12 lucky guys for it?
Now, what qualities are we looking for? Are we going for facial shots, topless, full frontal, plain nude, or what?
Don’t think we’d better get them to dress up in uniform though……why did I get an immediate image of jd as Davy Crockett there! …. or anything to do with their TR aliases….another image of Dawg in a husky suit!…..and Mark wrapped up in a sheepskin rug….Max posing nude with a silver hammer ready to pummel a server….

the dog was there 8 years before the cat.
She is just a very gentle dog. She used to run outside if our last cat was getting harrassed by other cats. Bear would chase the other cats out of the yard, stop at the end of the yard, and then come trotting back, proud as could be.
She is also GREAT with my boys.
But she is MY dog. got her for the boys, but she bonded with me. So as I go from room to room, both the dog and cat follow me around. one on my lap, the other at my feet. Sure helps on the weeks I don’t have the boys.
And as you see, she is such a pretty girl!

I come back here all the time beacuse it’s the only place on the Entire Net that I actually feel like “Home”. Yes we have our ups and downs and discussions can turn into arguments that eventually get settled, but then this has all the markings of a family doesn’t it? ;).
I am all over the place reading up on a lot of things bu the ony place I feel at home is Tech Republic.
This isnt something that I can explain easily, but it’s an emotion rather than a logical conclusion. I’m sure you’ve felt it too, When you been to all the other places that you normally visit and then you end up finishing here, something happens that “Feels” like Home”
And so I have made Tech Republic my home for nowhere else am I as comfortable. Even when I screw up,I feel silly, but still at home and I suspect that there is a little bit of this in all of us.
That is the reason I am and always shall be a member, I stand by it and keep coming back to it. Tech Republic.
My Home.
Warmest Regards

after all, who but a big brother would treat you so badly? 😀
I do agree entirely.
I like the open way people can discuss things. We don’t always agree, but that is what makes it a “discussion”. Much more fun than one person making a post and everyone else responding “I do agree entirely”. (where did I hear that before?)
I have also learned more about differnt countries and cultures in the last year than I have in my entire 13 years of primary education and the 6 years of college after that.
Would you believe that not every Canadian is a tree hugging hippie? :0 ;\

Of course, we are all tree hugging hippies. The last of the rednecks were allowed to die out with my father’s generation and no new ones have been allowed to breed. To be a true Canadian, you must hug a tree daily or you could be deported.
Where else in the world would have currency named a ‘loonie’? (Named after a bird, not the Canadian personality)
Don’t forget that this the land where there is a mountie on every corner and we all live in igloos.
Heres to Yorkville, Rochdale College and BC bud!

In reply to I thought that was a condition of citizenship.
It was back in 2000, and I was in Toronto for training. I had known about the loonie, but the twoonie was new to me.
I asked what it was called and they told me twoonie.
Well, this was OBVIOUSLY to STUPID to be true, and they were just making fun of the dumb yank in hopes of catching me say it! Well, I wasn’t falling for it, no sir! Sure, your money is loonie twoonie. Suuuuuuurrrrreeee it is.
To MY embarrasement, and the embarrasement of the entire country of Canada, it DID turn out to be true! :0 I WAS embarrassed for both myself AND our “neighbors up north”.
Who would have thunked it? ;\

Messing with American’s minds
by oldbag · about 17 years, 10 months ago
In reply to Oh, I remember
Don’t you know that a favourite Canadian passtime is messing with American’s minds. In a former job, I travelled to the US of A at least a couple of times a year and I had great fun playing this one. Some of the activities of this game include:
Asking who one the War of 1812.
Training myself not to say ‘eh’ at the end of every sentence and then watch all my American co-workers hang on my every word, waiting for me to drop the eh. The only time I ever failed at this was after having too many micro brewery beer in Portland, OR.
I actually had a guy from Texus pay me $5 (US) for a toonie. (This is absolutely true. I laughed at that for days.)
One of the favourite Canadian comedy shows (This Hour has 22 Minutes) had a particularly funny segment called ‘Talking to Americans’.
As a child, I grew up not far from the border. We actually had cars with Michigan plates stop and ask how far they had to travel to see snow in July. We pointed them West.
One thing you can say about Canadians, we have a great sence of humour. We need it.

Yes and some of us are now living in nervous anticipation, wondering what they will name the three= $3.00 dollar bill based on the fact that it’s to hard to rub two $5.00 s together or other such nonsense. Imagine flying into LA or New York and asking if they have change for a “Threesies”? =$3.00 🙂
Now that’s the day to be afraid of. Yes,be very afraid.
And then after he picks himself up off the floor and stop’s laughing, what will he say, CANADA right?
Yup. 😉

This is a significant development project (not just the forums) but we are hoping for early August. It is, however, a significant project and I hesitate to commit to specific date at this stage. We aren’t going to launch it until it is ready for prime time. Most, if not all of our page templates will be redone. We’re already seeing much faster performance in our dev environments.

TR is my family
by jardinier · about 17 years, 10 months ago
In reply to Fill in the blank – I come to TR because __________
Yup. I live alone, work alone, and there is only one family member with whom I keep in touch.
I don’t drink, so pubs and clubs are out. Singles bars and groups for the same reason.
I go through various stages of attending church regularly for the social part — the good people don’t mind me skipping the sermon and just showing up for the coffee and bikkies.
They say you can’t choose your family but you can choose your friends. Well most of the folk here are nice to me most of the time, so that’s a good deal by my standards.
In fact I would say without hesitation that my TR family gives me a lot better value than my real family ever did.
Like many others, I have quickly lost interest in answering Tech Q & A’s because certain individuals, who know who they are but shall remain nameless, always get there first. Of course Aussies have a big advantage over Yanks because of the time difference, but how can an amateur like me get a word in against a pro like Colin?
Although I occasionally ask questions, I can get precise answers more quickly by emailing or telephoning certain friends.
As the miscellaneous discussions consist a lot more of opinions as distinct from facts, I don’t really learn much of value there. So it is really a conversation type of situation. I’m not really (well not at all into) all the repartee because I get sufficient of that from real (that is corporeal as opposed to cyber) people during the day. I am an extravert extraordinaire and talk to anyone, any time, anywhere about anything.
I make people smile or laugh with my spontaneous jokes and I guess that is really the most important part of my day.
The miscellaneous discussions are definitely SERIOUSLY ADDICTIVE for someone like myself who has too much time on their hands.
Well there’s lots more, but that is my contribution for the moment.
And I sincerely and warmly thank all my TR family members becos without all youse guys and gals, I would be a VERY lonely man.

until the lass is actually in Sydney.
Currently everything is going according to plan, and she should be here within the next week.
However conditions being what they are, with Addis Ababa currently a war zone, nothing can be guaranteed. Because of the hundreds of emails we have exchanged, I am 100 per cent sure the lassie is genuine. But the corrupt regime in Ethiopia try and make it as difficult as possible for anyone to travel to a Western country — especially in this case, as the lassie is an orphan and as such is considered to be the property of the government.
Her pastor has been making all the preparations and I know for sure he is a real guy because he is on a website as one of several pastors in Africa working under the Sisters of Mercy.
You were quite justified in being skeptical because the situation in Ethiopia is more horrible than anyone can imagine. There are 3.5 million orphans for a start.
However I have a strong faith in God and will accept the outcome whichever way it falls.
So hang in there buddy

to use the TQ&A.
Sure, sometimes it takes a day sometimes to resolve your issue, but other times people trip all over each other to be the first to get you the correct answer.
Just remember to ALWAYS close and rate the answers. Giving a quick note of what actually solved the issue will move you higher up the priority for others to WANT to provide you an answer again sometime. People that don’t are less likely to get a fast response next time.
Good luck and hang on! B-)

I am retired now and just play at home. I read TR because it tells me what potential problems are out there and what to do to evade them. It tells me about new products that I might want to check up on. It tells me tips on how to make my PC work faster. It links me to places where I can find even more info. I am able to pass on the tips I find here to my friends who are not as technically adept as I am – and when it comes to the PC stuff as opposed to mainframe I am not technically adept. It helps me out when I do run into a problem as to how to get around it. All in all it is something I really look forward to.
I love the postings like this one because the techs are getting funnier and funnier all the time.
I am also interested in stuff to do with Linux as I am thinking of switching from Windows to Linux. I am trying out MEPIS right now and the comments about Linux help point to other distros that might be of use.

that the discussions you start tend to get alot of responses – this one in particular is almost at 200 responses thus far. You tend to have pretty good idea as to what people like to discuss.
OK, I’ll bite the hook…
I come to TR, day after day (actually it’s been a couple of weeks since I’ve been here, went out of town recently for a family wedding) for pretty much all the points you discussed.Tech Q&A is a mixed bag, it has potential but I don’t see any thing that forces a person to rate the answers he’s rec’d and close his question which is a bugger sometimes if you put in a decent effort at providing an answer.
The downloads are OK but I wouldn’t say that’s what brings me to TR. I would rather refer to them as a nice supplement to an already great site.
Mostly I come to TR in response to the email newsletters I’ve signed up for (pretty much all of them), there’s usually something that catched my eye that’s worth investigating. Lately George Ou’s discussions seem to be pretty interesting, he also tends to get into spats (I’m not saying he starts them) with a few other dedicated readers of his columns and that’s always fun to read & watch.
The water cooler & miscellaneous discussions are by far the best, I enjoy a break from my work and reading about discussions that may not always be tech related is great, a break from work, a chance to get involved and educated on a topic you may know little or alot about and get everyone’s differing viewpoints on a subject is always an awesome thing.
Good Discussion, you got your finger on the pulse for sure!

the water cooler does get most of my time. I have been trying to do less of the political and more of the tech, but it doesn’t always work out like that.
Always nice to hear that someone likes my posts. 😀

To keep up with the field

In reply to Fill in the blank – I come to TR because __________
I retired 6 years ago, not from the IT Field but I was actively involved with computers as an equipment repairman in a large machine shop. Most of our equipment was CNC and required a working knowledge of systems maintenance. That involvement took me to a higher level in my personal computing life, building and repairing systems for friends and family. Tech Republic enables me to keep up with progress and changes in the field. I have 2 son in laws in the IT Business and if they were General Geeks, I would possibly be a Private.

you learn

by doing. College teaches you how to learn more than anything else. Getting your hands on equipment and working with it will teach you much more. After you get established, many employers will send you to school. My work is paying for my BA.
Good luck!

I come because…

In reply to Fill in the blank – I come to TR because __________
Ok, I will probably get slammed for this, but I came to TR after reading an article or two published at TR about IT projects and the problems with their success. I am an experienced IT/IS software developer/engineer/tech lead/whatever ya wanna call it. But I also am an – dare I say it – academic. Well really a pracamederian (not sure I spelled that right).
Basically, I am a new breed of learner that wants to implement and practice real world solutions. I want academia to incorporate real world into the learning environment. So far I think I have been somewhat successful.
At any rate, that is what brought me to TR. I am actually doing research now and the members of TR are perfect for that research. I am hoping to get my blog entry to post and ya’ll can read for yourself what its about. 🙂
At any rate, I like the knowledge, the fun, the stories, even the crazy jokes because it really relates to all the different “techies” out there. You know all us book learned, self-taught, hackers, geniuses, hobbiests, etc.
