    floppy disk

    Locked

    by longmanjay ·

Windows98 see’s the floppy disk. It shows in controll panel and it is setup correctly in device manager but it will not read any disketts. Error message is disk in drive A: is not formated and when you try to format, you get another error message about disk utility lockup and bad diskett. I have tried six different disk and it is the same error messages. How can I fix this?. This is a laptop(Thinkpad).

You have a dirty floppy drive or a bad one. If you have some canned air I would try blowing it out. If that doesn’t work, then replace the drive. I have had this problem with floppy drives showing up correctly but not working. You may want to try booting to a boot disk and see if it reads that disk. If not, then you have a bad drive.

Check your device settiongs to make sure there is not an IRQ or memeory conflict. GO though MyComputer properties to the devices listing to check this.

I have seen this happen with a bad floppy cable, try replacing the system cable. (Might as well reseat all the components as long as your there)
Cheaper and easier than replacing the whole floppy- I always try to use a KNOWN GOOD replacement part. Eliminates guessing…..

Is this floppy removable from the laptop? If it is, shutdown, pull it out and check the pins on the connectors. If all is straight, reseat the floppy. And, yes, while you have it out, give it a good suck with a vacuum.
