Freedom of speech is nonexisten here on TR from what I see.
Lockedby why me worry?? · about 16 years, 9 months ago
I don’t claim to be a saint and yes, some of my posts and responses may be deemed as offensive, but why must the TR moderators chase after me and edit my posts? Since when did TR turn into AOL with chat room monitors kicking people off for voicing their opinions, even if those opinions aren’t politically correct? Is there some kind of socialist agenda behind TR and their dictators..err..I mean moderators in charge? If my posts are offending someone, then that someone has a choice of not reading my posts. It’s like the loudmouths who complain about “offensive” TV or radio broadcasts. Hey morons, there’s something called a remote control and tuner knob to change the station or channel if you don’t like it.

I speak the truth about the H1-B epidemic and at talk about what I deem to be “cultural rudeness” on the part of the Indians, yet I get called a “racist” and “bigot”. The truth is the truth and suppressing the truth won’t change the facts.

the subjective.
Your statement that which you “deem to be “cultural rudeness” on the part of the Indians” is, by the use of the word “deem,” clearly subjective. Apparently you seem to hold that others should conform to your cultural standards. If that is the case, then yes, by definition, you are bigoted.
From Merriam-Webster:
Main Entry: bigot
: a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices; especially : one who regards or treats the members of a group (as a racial or ethnic group) with hatred and intolerance

We’ve got more than a few OS bigots floating around TR also. I only mention it because the definitial clarified it so well.
As for the H1B thing that pops up; I find politics distastefull in general but fully admit I haven’t the understanding of the H1B situation required to make any comments.

Quite true.
by deepsand · about 16 years, 9 months ago
In reply to by that definition (off-topic)
Most are unaware that the primary definition of bigotry is class agnostic.
As for the H1B debate, it is necessary that one always make the distinction between the companies who use such & similar visas to obtain employees & the employees who are so obtained.
Unfortunately, too many ignore that distinction, and visit the sins of the father on the children.

No, I have no evidence nor am I suggesting that TR is concerned about being PC. I simply stated that “I would hope they would not resort to that”.
I have noticed that these forums contain alot of different subjects, some of which have nothing to do with the field we all work in. I am not OK with racial slurs nor do I beleive that TR has the obligation to post any dribble we wright.

In reply to Liberalism started the “Politically Correct” movement
It seems that there was a liberal party long before the latest and previous up swells in PC. I’m not really concerned about your political views keeping in mind that there is no difference between a hard liberal or conservative hater. I just find it hard to believe that the Liberal party sprang forth from the politically correct movement.
(Ah, those days of wonder when someone was a “waste reciprocal janitorial engineer” not “toilet cleaner”. At least that over-reaction is done with.)

By my understanding of the current slang, that’s a good start.
by absolutely · about 16 years, 9 months ago
In reply to I’m no hater
But tends to be a bit vague, like the definition of ‘conservative’, which always implies a wish to ‘conserve’ something but rarely includes a prefix to indicate what. ‘Family values conservative’? ‘Free enterprise conservative’? ‘Environmental conservative’? It’s possible to attempt to conserve anything one has, making ‘conservative’ a fairly vague name. Perhaps that’s why it was chosen, when it was chosen.
Likewise for liberal, it doesn’t specify which liberty it purports to protect, only that it asserts ‘liberty’ compared to its opponent. Not much of a claim, really, given the anti-liberty propensities of its main competitor.

Are you sure he understands?
by absolutely · about 16 years, 9 months ago
In reply to It is your use of “liberal” as a pejorative tht requires explanation.
How many people remember that ‘liberal’ and ‘liberty’ derive from the same Latin root? How fewer understand that only a subset of the agenda of today’s left wing is truly ‘liberal’, and/or that only a subset of today’s right wing is consistent with the liberties guaranteed by the Constitution? In my experience, the answer to all those questions is “damn few”.
How many are surprised by the phrase that Republicans are (on some issues, such as occasionally tax rates) more ‘liberal’ than Democrats? It’s true, but only if you consider the literal, rather than the colloquial, meaning of ‘liberal’.

‘Political Correctness’ is the modern name for a particular variety of tyranny, which I’m sure is older than organized systems of law.
‘Politically Correct’ is also used as a ‘straw man’ to falsely impugn many legitimate claims for civil rights.

And not one comparable epithet for those who infringe on the liberty of individuals. (‘Tyrant’ applies only to those with formal, recognized political power, though infringement on personal liberty is hardly the exclusive pastime of tyrants.)
How sad.

by deepsand · about 16 years, 9 months ago
In reply to So many words for transgressions against arbitrary collective power
The presence of a formal or recognized authority is not requisite for being a tyrant.
Main Entry: tyrant
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English tyraunt, from Anglo-French tyran, tyrant, from Latin tyrannus, from Greek tyrannos
1 a : an absolute ruler unrestrained by law or constitution b : a usurper of sovereignty
2 a : a ruler who exercises absolute power oppressively or brutally b : one resembling an oppressive ruler in the harsh use of authority or powerOur Founding Fathers did not speak of “tyrannies of the majority” without a clear understanding of the meaning of “tyranny.”

I’m looking for something that implies the questionable parentage and a pox on one’s descendants, as “blasphemy” and “treason” do, and find no such word. Collectivism, it would seem, is built in to the forms of collective interaction called “language”. Another item for the to-do list.

“Free” Site Services does not mean Free Speech
by skirsch · about 16 years, 9 months ago
In reply to Liberal is a very common term
Not to add to an incredibly stupid argument, and I’m sure this has been brought up already – I simply don’t have time enough or care to read 400+ replies to idiocy.
You DO NOT have the right to free speech on this site, no matter what you think. This site is owned and operated privately by CNET and TechRepublic and you use its services only after having the opportunity to view the Terms of Usage agreement (http://www.cnetnetworks.com/editorial/terms.html?tag=tr.ft.co).
Even if you were to pay for the use of TechRepublic you would not have the right to free speech.
And since you’re not smart enough to read ToA’s/ToU’s and EULA’s, I figure your not smart enough to read the Constitution either:
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”CONGRESS shall make no law – not that Companies, or Persons can make no law, or rule. Not that your freedom of speech is protected uniformly no matter what by the constitution — simply that CONGRESS shall make no law. Now who is the liberal, Mr I-want-blanket-immunity-from-my-own-vocal-idiocy.
And, as for the Terms of Usage from CNET:
“We have the right, but not the obligation, to take any of the following actions in our sole discretion at any time and for any reason without giving you any prior notice:1. Restrict, suspend, or terminate your access to all or any part of our Services;
2. Change, suspend, or discontinue all or any part of our Services;
3. Refuse, move, or remove any material that you submit to our sites for any reason;
4. Refuse, move, or remove any content that is available on our sites;
5. Deactivate or delete your accounts and all related information and files in your account;
6. Establish general practices and limits concerning use of our sites.”“Without limiting the foregoing, you agree that you will not use our sites to take any of the following actions:
1. Defame, abuse, harass, stalk, threaten, or otherwise violate the legal right of others;
2. Publish, post, upload, e-mail, distribute, or disseminate (collectively, “Transmit”) any inappropriate, profane, defamatory, infringing, obscene, indecent, or unlawful content;
3. Transmit files that contain viruses, corrupted files, or any other similar software or programs that may damage or adversely affect the operation of another person’s computer, our sites, any software or hardware, or telecommunications equipment;
4. Advertise or offer to sell any goods or services for any commercial purpose unless you have our written consent to do so;

In reply to Freedom of speech is nonexisten here on TR from what I see.
And no, I’m not in any way shape or form affiliated with them…
The business has the right to edit anything they like.
They are not denying you free speech, you have the right to say whatever you want. They/the moderators, on the other hand, have the right to choose the kind of content they want on their website.
You don’t have the right to post anything here, and neither do I. Sorry, doesn’t exist.
TV stations and newspapers have the right to and often do refuse content and/or advertising on whatever grounds they see fit. Bars kick out obnoxious drunks. This website is the same.
You don’t deny TR the right to trim SPAM do you? Well they obviously judge some of your posts to be equally as undesireable.
If I thought they were censuring you because you were slagging Microsoft or something similar, I’d be on your side. But I don’t see that free speech extends to forcing private organizations to carry your opinions if they chose not to.

In reply to You need a clue – Another misunderstanding of “Freedom of Speech”
The terms “freedom of speech” and “censorship” are frequently misused in this country. You have the right to say, print, or otherwise distribute whatever you want, as long as it isn’t slander or libel. However, neither TR nor anyone else is obligated to provide you a forum. This is their site, subject to their whims.
It’s going to be difficult to determine why they edited you without copies of what you posted. Obviously its going to be equally difficult to include those examples here without them getting re-edited. If you’d like to send me a PM with some edited content, I’ll be happy to take a guess at why they pulled it. Since I’m not on the staff, a guess is all it will be.

In reply to You need a clue – Another misunderstanding of “Freedom of Speech”
Freedom of Speech belongs to the owner of a resource, for WMW’s complaint, the TechRepublic servers.
There is no “Freedom of Speech” within the confines of a private business.
Yes, there is “Freedom of Speech” within the confines of a private business, but that freedom is reserved to the owners of that business, who may describe parameters for the use of their resources. I may not use my employer’s resources for personal gain outside the contractual scope of my employment and labor there, and I may not use their communications equipment for speech harmful to the interests of my employer, nor contrary to the stated parameters of permitted speech within the confines of their property. In general, speech that is not contrary to the business’ pursuit of profit nor prohibited by law (threats and incitement to panic or violence most notably, ie yelling “fire” in a crowded theater or work environment, when there is no fire) are permitted.
You take the term out of context and apply it incorrectly. You have absolutely no rights within the TR forums except those the owners wish to extend you.
Generally, he has any rights not prohibited explicitly by law nor by the owners of the forum. In this case, however, the terms of use of this business include a disclaimer of their privilege of arbitrary control:
We have the right, but not the obligation, to take any of the following actions in our sole discretion at any time and for any reason without giving you any prior notice:
1. Restrict, suspend, or terminate your access to all or any part of our Services;
2. Change, suspend, or discontinue all or any part of our Services;
3. Refuse, move, or remove any material that you submit to our sites for any reason;
4. Refuse, move, or remove any content that is available on our sites;
5. Deactivate or delete your accounts and all related information and files in your account;
6. Establish general practices and limits concerning use of our sites. You agree that we will not be liable to you or any third party for taking any of these actions.

To do so is within their rights — on their property.

One of the first things I look at BEFORE reading an individuals posts is the date joined as that gives me a big clue as to whether I will even consider reading even the title, let alone the body of the post. Might you have tossed in a bit of spam or attempted to sell something?? I haven’t read any of your posts, and there was an individual with a very similar user name that was in the habit of flaming anything and everything that others expressed. AS was already stated, TR has the right to edit anything they wish, for any reason, at any time. That’s just the way it is and we all have to live with it, like it or not.

In reply to Freedom of speech is nonexisten here on TR from what I see.
I don’t think that “freedom of speech” is being curtailed at all. I’ve made a couple of thousand posts about absolutely anything that I wanted over the last couple of years. I’ve got about as close to burning the US flag on some occasions as I can do without matches and not a single post has been pulled or edited. I’ve insulted anyone I wish exactly how I wish.
Most of the other peers – at least those who do get properly involved – can say the same.
So, I suggest you need to have a quick look in the mirror. You could even get yourself your own username rather than poncing off others. You’re a bit stupid, aren’t you? You can’t get by in any discussion without loudmouthing it and chucking insults around and what that makes you is really BORING. You’ve even come out with the classic “that someone has a choice of not reading my posts”. Tell you! We don’t WANT to read your posts and we’re all happy with Beth’s clean-up of your crap.
If I’m wrong, I invite all of your supporter (sic) to flame.

May Not Be TR Staff
by thechas · about 16 years, 9 months ago
In reply to Freedom of speech is nonexisten here on TR from what I see.
The root cause of your post being edited may not be directly tied to the staff of TR.
Unless the staff is a lot more people than I anticipate, and they have nothing to do but watch the forums, they just don’t have the time to read all the posts.
What is more apt to be happening is that some peer is offended by your posts and reports them to the TR staff. The TR staff then reviews the post and acts in what is the best interest of TR.
The most memorable instance of this was the thread the Guru Of DOS started a few years back on the prospects of what would happen if all of the spam offers of treatments for male enhancement he received over the course of a month could be added together. I missed out on most of the posts, but hear that things got well out of hand.
Even if you are using a pseudonym, it is wise on ANY public forum to control your language. You never know who might be able to trace it back to you.

Sarcastic is easy for most people. Funny takes some work. Getting them both right at the same time is extremely difficult. Apparently, somebody thinks you aren’t quite getting it right.
I understand how you feel about being edited as I’ve always hated it myself. But if it’s happening to the majority of your posts, you might consider cutting back somewhat on the rhetoric.

Let me ask you something.
If Imus had called your wife or your daughter a “Ho” on national radio, would you be upset?
If you owned Imus’ radio station/network, and you were worried about losing network sponsors – $$$, would you not want the right to decide what to broadcast on your own network?
If Imus, or you, want to create your own website and say whatever you want, go fill your boots, none of us can or would stop you.
If you want to play on someone else’s site, play by their rules, or go somewhere else.
I’ve never found you funny. I have found you bigoted and nasty. Now Dawg, he is funny (and scary sometimes).

“Their friggin problem”, not.

In reply to Sorry for getting ticked off, but I don’t appreciate having my posts edited
“I think my posts are funny and sarcastic, but if some find them offensive, it’s their friggin problem!”
No, it’s TR’s problem, possibly every members’ problem, and to some extent your problem too. The TR business model, like so many web businesses, is to make money by providing advertising-supported content to a target market audience. If too many in that audience is offended by your posts, they’ll leave and not come back. Fewer eyeballs watching the ads, less money from the advertisers. Also, some advertisers do not want to be associated with some types of content. If enough advertisers pull their accounts, either because of low ad viewership or because they find the site offensive, no TR.
As to it being your problem, it’s a question of what you want from your membership. If all you’re looking for is a place to spout off, then you’re right: what others think is not your problem at all. On the other hand, if you’re at all concerned with having others here respect your opinion, or want to include your TR membership on a resume, you may want to express yourself differently. You can’t expect people to respect your opinion without you respecting theirs.
Consider trying to post without trying to be sarcastic. Sarcasm rarely elicits a positive response from others; it’s difficult to write sarcasm in writing without looking mean-spirited or contemptuous instead. It’s especially difficult to pull off if the only content in your post is a sarcastic remark devoid of supporting facts or opinions, just sarcasm for sarcasm’s sake. Look at some posts from TR members whose opinions you may value and see how often they’re sarcastic without providing additional information. Plus, it’s far more effective if you use it less and save it for occasions that truly deserve a cutting remark. Try presenting a reasoned position and slip the sarcasm in at the very end, you stupid dingleberry.

and with a modicum of intelligence you might not be called to task and be edited. From what I’ve read of your drivel regarding the H-1B matter, you came off as a small minded, despicable, racist bigot and I’d bet my last dollar, that in your real life you don’t dare speak like that. If you talk the talk, you’ve got to be prepared to walk the walk but your kind doesn’t walk, it slithers.

You may think you have a razor sharp wit but from here I see you as a nitwit whose tongue and/or mind would probably be best used as toilet paper.
There were/are many points to consider on the H-1B topic; yours just aren’t amongst the ones worthy of consideration. Beth edited you??? Well TS. You got precisely what you deserved. Don’t like it??? Find somewhere else to pollute with your despicable, infantile garbage. If you fail to comprehend the intended insults here let me quote you:

Why You Worry ??
by tony hopkinson · about 16 years, 9 months ago
In reply to Freedom of speech is nonexisten here on TR from what I see.
Seeing as you were censored before I had the opportunity to be offended and to be fair offensive back, there’s no way I can comment on whether I would have found it offensive.
If you do offend me I will tell you, then it’s down to you whether you continue to do so or amend your behaviour.
This however is TR’s site, if they don’t like what you say they do have the right to stop it being said, whether it’s you, me, George Ou, Maxwell or any f’cker else.
Their ‘house’, their rules.
If they censor you don’t rail about your freedom of speech, reply and reword.
If someone was to say most US criminals aren’t white. If they said that as a piece of supporting evidence in a diatribe on caucasian racial superiority, many would find that sort of racist drivel deeply offensive.
If they said it as supporting evidence for continuing discrimination, some would find the pinko, liberal hand wringing eqyually offensive as well.
Perhaps you could put “warning offensive material in post” in the subject line, that way we could choose not to read.

In reply to Freedom of speech is nonexisten here on TR from what I see.
Why Me Worry published hateful, rude, insensitive remarks regarding Indians on the site. I sent him an email saying that would not be tolerated. He responded by posting dozens of horrid posts, each one worse than the last. THEN I kicked him off the site. Then he used about 20 different user names to post more racist tripe. I edited and kicked them all out. Then he came back with a similar user name (with two question marks) and behaved for a few days. But, of course, he couldn’t be a good boy. He went back to his obsessive posting about how he hates Indian people. (Calling people RACIST SLURS has nothing to do with your political beliefs.) I expect, since I kicked him yesterday, he’ll be back with another bunch of random one-use user names to post his opinions. Whatever. You guys know how to use the Mark as Spam button. Anything racist is subject to removal so click it!

who takes the bedsheets with them when they get up to go burn a cross on someone’s lawn. That little comment was how I used to refer to the KKK idiots and when I read comments like yours I can see the levels of hatred and bile are still high, just refocussed slightly to be more inclusive of other races.
The fact that you can’t see or understand this pretty much says it all. Norrow minded mental midgets such as yourself need to be isolated so that your hatred doesn’t fester and breed. You finding Indians rude and obnoxious, I find very difficult to believe, unless, of course, you were the one being rude and obnoxious to start with. I guess you just don’t like anyone who is slightly different from you in colour and/or culture.
Your levels of bile and hatred usually indicates an individual with esteem and identity problems coupled with paranoid delusions of grandeur. There’s nothing grand about you and I can only hope you crawl back under the rock you came out from under.
As was pointed out by the majority, TR is a business and the people running it police it accordinly. Beth is/was only doing her job and from this seat she’s doing a damn fine job of it.

If Why worry was simply annoying, I wouldn’t bother.
And I don’t dogpile on many political discussions especially if its the same old democrats suck/republicans suck song that just seems to endlessly repeat.
I come from usenet, and before that BBSs. My inroduction was alt.folklore.urban, when dogpiling is a way of life.
I will tell you why this one bothers me. Racism. Now I am a white anglo saxon protestant male, so I have little stake in the game. But a wise person taught me not to ignore racism, because turning a blind eye to it helps it grow.
I don’t think any of us have an impact on how he conducts himself, or he would have left long ago and not come back. Maybe if enough people call him out, he might just finally take the hint.

What’s all this ruckus about anyway? I honestly pity the guy
by big ole jack · about 16 years, 9 months ago
In reply to Prejudice, Biggotry, and Racism
Perhaps he has had nothing but negative experiences with Indians and has formed a stereotypical image of an entire culture based upon a few bad apples. Come on now, we all do this from time to time and not one of us can honestly say that we don’t label, judge, or stereotype people based upon the experiences we encounter. Case in point, a good friend of mine was robbed at gunpoint by a group of young thugs, probably gang bangers, who all happened to be black and Hispanic. My friend started ranting about how all blacks and Hispanics are criminals and started spewing racially charged epithets and slurs at an entire ethnic group over the actions of a few punks. Is it wrong for him to have behaved this way? Sure it was, but given the circumstances, people who are constantly victimized or subjected to a constant behavior from certain people will resort to bigoted and racially charged rhetoric and behavior…whether or not others like it.

“Sure it was”. ‘Nuff said both for your friend and for Why??. Especially given that your “excuse” for your friend of constant victimisation doesn’t apply to him and, I suspect, to Why?? either.
I’m white but I’m neither Anglo-Saxon nor Protestant in a WASP culture so although racism doesn’t directly affect me yet, it may at some stage. I’d rather we not get into a social mind-set where any sort of racism doesn’t immediately attract censure or is even deemed acceptable.

To the contrary, he’s continued the same behavior here, by repeatedly mention of such, with the clear intent to defend it as being both justified and “protected speech.”

chicken and egg question
by jdclyde · about 16 years, 9 months ago
In reply to What if a non-felon commits a felony?
Does the person become a felon at the time of the act, or at the time he/she is caught and convicted?
Like O.J. Simpson, found not-guilty, (provided he really did it, ~cough cough~ ) would still be a felon despite not being a CONVICTED felon?
-
June 18, 2007 at 3:34 pm #2597428
Presumed felon would be more accurate.
by deepsand · about 16 years, 9 months ago

“Felon” has a specific legal definition; and, absent a conviction, one is not legally a felon.
Therefore, one can but presume that, given all pertinent facts, a conviction could be obtained.

Particularly when not all are aware of its use currently be in vogue.
Was this simply an unwarranted assumption of his part? Or, was it the case that he hoped that its meaning would cause confusion?
Odd, too, that one who claims to be old enough to have participated in the pre-net on-line world should choose to use a term coined by Gen Y.

“Like Deja vu all over again” – Yogi Berra
by captbilly1eye · about 16 years, 9 months ago
In reply to Freedom of speech is nonexisten here on TR from what I see.
After reading all of the posts in this incredibly long diatribe, I couldn’t help but feel I had heard it all before…
After years in many other forums, The appeal that TR had and has is that its members are primarily made up of like-minded professionals that have some direct or indirect relationship to computer tech.
The opportunity to help people with technical issues, learn new things and communicate directly with others in my field was what brought me here.
There are hundreds of the stereo-typical forums that are filled with many members that have their own agenda to pound home. I remember being somewhat guilty of that myself at one time or another. But I grew out of that long ago.The fact that you are crying freedom of speech is something I have heard all too many times before. Nothing new. In fact… it reminds me of an article written in 2001 by Timothy Campbell titled “What is a Troll?”
If you have never read it, you owe it to yourself to check it out. Perhaps it will hit home or, like it did for me, provide a distinct echo.
Specifically the section titled; ‘What about Free Speech?’
http://tinyurl.com/23t6rfnow… let’s move on.

In reply to Freedom of speech is nonexisten here on TR from what I see.
Seriously, I don’t know what you’re talking about.
Of course TR can edit out anything they’d like as Max said so succinctly but where have you been “censored”?
I create a post in OO.o then paste it into a reply so I have record of the crap I post sometimes. If you’ve done that please feel free to send me peermail and I’ll see if I can guess why TR edited and get back to you. I’m hard to shock so any content you’d send would be okay and I never post email content, anywhere.
I thought that I might be booted for some of my own drivel but that hasn’t happened and I don’t think that it will happen. Some folks seem to have difficulty viewing my latest discussion but I can hardly lay blame for that on TR’s doorstep. I find that a page “reload” often works just fine if I get an error. There are so many browsers and add-ons/security settings that it’s hard to say why any particular pc can’t “do” any given task online
I try not to post slanderous and inflammatory appearing comments unsupported by facts or evidence. I got a well deserved TR smackdown for not posting reference links a couple of years ago and the lesson still sticks with me. In other words if I call a spade a spade I show that I have reason to believe it’s a spade and not something else.
I’m about as politically incorrect a person as you’ll find at TR and to my knowledge I’ve never been edited out by anyone at TR. I’ve edited myself “out” but if you take a look at my contacts you’ll see that there are some heavy hitters there, some of whom would no doubt report my drivel as offensive if they thought they were offended.
Awaiting peermail…
Edited because heference isn’t really a word.

In reply to Oh. Yeah
“Those who have no compassion have no wisdom. Knowledge, yes; cleverness, maybe; wisdom, no. A clever mind is not a heart. Knowledge doesn’t really care. Wisdom does.”
“When you wake up in the morning, Pooh,” said Piglet at last, “what’s the first thing you say to yourself?”
“What’s for breakfast? said Pooh. “What do you say, Piglet?”
“I say, I wonder what’s going to happen exciting today?” said Piglet.
Pooh nodded thoughtfully.
“It’s the same thing,” he said.“Lots of people talk to animals,” said Pooh.
“Not that many listen though.”
“That’s the problem.”Piglet sidled up to Pooh from behind, “Pooh!,” he whispered.
“Yes, Piglet?”
“Nothing,” said Piglet, taking Pooh’s paw. “I just wanted to be sure of you.”
(thanks, Mick)“Rabbit’s clever,” said Pooh thoughtfully.
“Yes,”said Piglet, “Rabbit’s clever.”
“And he has Brain.”
“Yes,” said Piglet, “Rabbit has Brain.”
There was a long silence.
“I suppose,” said Pooh, “that that’s why he never understands anything.”In the imagination of a child, everything is real and understandable and achievable. It is only with the passage from childhood to adulthood that this is irrevocably lost. – TiggerTwo

WhyMeWorry had been around for over a year as a normal peer (whatever THAT means for THIS site!) :p
He’s not been reamed before now but he just seems to have fallen over the edge one day, got his main account canned by Beth for racist comments and then got his new account jumped all over by the Usual Suspects when he came back for a moan about it.
Seems that H-1B visas for Indians is his blue touchpaper.
Just goes to show that there are times when you need to back off, chill, have a curry and a pint of Cobra!
Neil 😀
I know I gave him a bit of a kicking back up aways but I think that he’s one of those people with a real blind spot for how he comes over at times. It is possible to resurrect yourself on here but he has got to tone down the racism and – maybe – crawl a bit.
I suspect that I won’t lose sleep over it.

Just a bunch of people enjoying berating an individual.
It’s funny.
Given the fact that most of us in IT are introverts, and many of us were the subject of ‘dogpiles’ growing up, it amazes me that a little more lattitude not be granted towards folks who mispeak.
We’ve probably got a few folks in here with Asperger’s syndrome as well. Some people with AS make Rosie O’Donnel look like the poster girl for tact and taste.
(now before anyone gets all over MY backside, I have AS myself)

You very obviously didn’t see what he wrote before it was edited. I have utter faith that if you had you would gladly feed him to the dogs.
I’ve been dealing with this joker for over a month now. I tried to handle the matter privately to avoid this very situation. Unfortunately, WMW couldn’t be persuaded to behave by my very professional private email.
He chose instead to up the ante by wreaking havoc on the community under several (like 20 or so) assumed identities and to insult a particular race of people over and over and over. It was hate speech, pure and simple.
Now I’ve alerted “the regulars” by entering into this discussion to help me combat this sucker. Why? Because it’s YOUR community that he’s affecting.
I suggest that if you don’t like what’s going on here you just take your own advice and quit beating a dead horse. We understand your perspective.
Or not. Whatever!

by locrian_lyric · about 16 years, 9 months ago
In reply to Beth, I think Richard is still stinging from a previous thread
That matter is over, as far as I’m concerned.
What I am concerned with is where this community is heading as a whole.
I’ve been around (mostly lurking until somewhat recently) since before the date on my account. This is my second account. I created it after I forgot the login name of my first one. I remember the original interface of this site….
What I see as of late is a GENERAL hostility that I don’t recall.
I saw some of WMW’s posts and they were over the top…some by alot.
Fine.
Ignore him, ban him, but DON’T FEED THE TROLLS.
He’s got folks in here so whipped up that many are sinking to pretty low level, and not just with him. The bad attitude is infecting the community in general.
It’s that attitude that I would like to see corrected.
If it means banning WMW or anyone else who is disruptive, so be it.
But seriously, do you think that keeping him around to be used as a punching bag is GOOD for the community?

Richard, I could not agree with you more on this point. And no, I don’t think bashing–generally speaking–is good for the community. My point to you was, believe it or not, this jerk had it coming.
If you’ve noticed, though, this thread has already moved to other topics… Like the health of the community and Warner Bros. cartoons! 😉 The rage is generally short lived and the nature of the beast.
And, may I say, thanks for being a reasonable human being during this discussion. It’s so refreshing.

In reply to With all due respect, Richard…
I am not saying that his posts should not have been edited or that his account should not have been fragged. You’ll not find a single instance of me defending word one of his posts.
What I don’t understand is that if you KNOW he’s causing problems, why is he not being banned on site every time he pops up?
Is it because it’s more ‘fun’ to attack him?
But at least I get to sit back and watch the crowd with pitchforks and torches storm the next castle.
with all due respect to you, madam; this is not the community I joined in 2002, nor it’s previous incarnation I had joined earlier than that.

Not being snippy…
by locrian_lyric · about 16 years, 9 months ago
In reply to Don’t get snippy with me, Mr!
…nor am I threatening to take my ball and go home.
I find both to be a total waste of time, effort, and energy. In return, I’d like to be spared subtle (or blatant) invitations to leave when I mention something I believe to be harmful to the community.
But please, don’t call me Mr. It makes me feel old, and I’m dealing with that enough already.
I mentioned this to someone else, but back in the days of Usenet (and the BBSes) we treated folks like that with what was called a PISS, or a Passive Ignore, Simultaneous Strike.
It’s good that you are taking care of the disruptive individuals, it makes the community far more enjoyable, and certainly a far better resource.
The cold sholder always works better than bringing out the flames. If you’re dealing with a real troll, he gets bored. If you’re dealing with someone who just gets carried away, they moderate their tone when they see that the behavior results in their being ostricised.
All anyone can really do in here is post words on a screen. I’ve had far worse than that done to me and I seriously doubt that I am alone in that regard.
We are professionals, we’ve all handled worse than the worst online troll. Ignore them and they do go away.
That is not to say that the moderators and owners of TR should not act according to their interests with regards to banning, moderating et al. I am simply saying that it does no good to feed the trolls.
Trolls want one thing: attention.
If one attacks a troll, one gives said troll attention, albeit negative attention.
What a troll can not stand is being ignored. When he is, he usually resorts to extremely outlandish behavior in the hopes to get an avalanche of attention once more.
I’m not making any demands or threats, nor am I being snippy or sarcastic. If It comes out that way, I apologize and can assure you it is not intentional.

Hello Pot? This is kettle…
by beth blakely · about 16 years, 9 months ago
In reply to Missing my point entirely.
If you’d like to compare our dedication and concern for this community, bring it on. I’ve been with TR for over seven years and I love it.
When I said “with all due respect,” I meant it. I was trying to explain my point of view. When you said “with all due respect, MADAM,” it read as quite sarcastic and condescending. Further, you assumed I wasn’t doing my job by getting rid of the idiot, but you were wrong. Both of those things ticked me off.
When I said you could choose to participate or not, I meant it. You’re free to do either. We’d be happy if you stayed, but hey: This is the community, warts and all.
I work hard every day to try and make it the best it can be. Most people here know that. You are cordially invited to believe that or not.
I’m finished going back and forth with you. You get the last word, so go for it!
Peace be with you!

No desire to go back and forth with anyone
by locrian_lyric · about 16 years, 9 months ago
In reply to Hello Pot? This is kettle…
which is of course my point.
Once again if my tone seems sarcastic, I apologize, it is quite unintentional.
I mentioned before that I have Asperger’s Syndrome, and while I have made great strides with regards to communication, I do have a problem with coming accross as sarcastic or condescending when I am not attempting to be either.
I respect the work you do and am not belittling it in any way. I made no assumptions about your duties or whether or not you are derelict in them, as I assume that you are not the only moderator.
If my posts led you to believe otherwise, then again, I apologize. My use of the term ‘madam’ was also not intended to be offensive. I simply have not engaged you prior to this, and as such did not presume to adress you by your given name absent a screen name.
Perhaps I should go back to lurking, as it seems that I have not progressed quite so far with my social skills as I had hoped.
Peace to you as well.
I do believe that you and the rest of the folk at TR are doing a fine job. I have enjoyed my tenure here, the recent exchanges notwithstanding.

In reply to Oh sure! Make me LIKE you!
We can save Tinkerbell! We CAN!!! All you have to do is believe in fairies! If you believe in fairies, clap your hands!!!
Richard only needs someone to understand that he is not trying to be objectionable. And cooler heads to point that out.
I think that I can own that POV- Richard and I had a nasty little exchange on another thread that was really about how deeply we BOTH feel about the subject matter. In the end, we both shook hands, like grown-ups do and forgave the other.
What has been missing is that I have been swimming in the water cooler for awhile now and Richard is new here.
Richard is okay. the world simply doesn’t need the WMW’s. Richard didn’t get why we are so reactive, maybe he still doesn’t.
What I have learned about this community that sets it apart from any other I have been a part of is that we truly CARE about the health of the board and will go to extraordinary lengths to communicate that. WMW was as damaging to the life of this board as cancer- his hatred painted all of us in colours that we do not wear.
We are a family of sorts. Maybe that is more obvious to me because of all the ribbons I wear in the names of survivors from this board as well as the names of the angels. I feel the sense of family intently and daily.
WMW is a festering wound to my family- people I care about. I am grateful you ban him as quickly as you can identify him.
Family should stick together.
Keep it up, Beth. You do good things.

I won’t take criticism of British food from the Yanks! You’ve taken all of the World’s best foods and morphed them into your own image and I’m not sure that too many of them have benefited!
I would offer the cheeseburger, Pizza Hut and the hot dog as examples of the Americanisation of something good. There are many, many more!
The most notable culinary lesson from my trips to the States is to say – trust me in this – it does not make food any closer to haute cuisine if you melt crap cheese all over it!

I can hardly stand to drive down a street with a White Castle on it. When I first moved to the Midwest, a friend insisted that White Castle was the perfect food. Yeesh!!! It was awful!
In later discussion we concluded that it likely has much to do with where I was raised. White Castle was an adult experience, while Midwesterners have had access to this commodity since childhood.

In reply to Neil..bite your tongue!
What microwaves do to croissant’s is a sin against nature.
Couple of datapoints:
1) Heard on the news a survey showed the favorite food of Britains is….currie.2)The epic “Harold and Kumar go to White Castle” was primarily filmed in and around Toronto. There are no White Castles here.
3) What Americans and Canadians often put on fast food (burgers and croissanwhich) is commercially known as cheese food, because it is so processed they can’t call it cheese any longer.
Melted real cheddar makes many things taste good.

In reply to I think the croissanwhich is vile
1)I live and work in the areas they supposedly drove through on their quest to find White Castles…
If the movie had occured where they said it did, the whole thing would have been ten minutes long.
2)Microwaved Croissants are slightly less palattable than wet cardboard
3)Cheese-food is SKEEEEERY! I always wondered “Cheese food, is that what Cheese eats?”
Given point #3, what do you suppose Cheese WHIZ is?

Many of the “west of Toronto” locations.
The scene where they are on the cliff wityh the hanglider, I know that actual spot. And from that spot you can see the road where the mythical White Castle is. There is actually a gas station there.
The first White Castle I’ve seen was in San Diego. I could be mistaken but I think I saw one in Vancouver. We don’t have anything like them in Toronto.

In reply to Hi kettle!
I would like to treat you to some traditional British food.
It had better be a curry. 😀
And a beer or two to wash it down.
Soapbox warning!
Actually, until just a twenty or so years ago, the jokes were totslly justified on the whole as British restaurant food was mostly rubbish – poorly cooked “French” or “Italian” missing the point of both in that that good ingredients are needed for good food.
Home-cooked food tended to be mostly bland with overcooked vegetables.
The last couple of decades we have become hugely food-conscious and the quality of restaurant and home-cooked food has gone up across the board and the number of international cuisines that we get right is now what it should be.
We still do damn good curries though.

I think British cuisine never caught on in the US because of the names. No self-respecting American is going to eat “Toad in the hole,” “Bangers and mash” or “Spotted Dick.” Of course, some of use that have been there and had it do occasionally miss it.

This is a property rights issue
by crashoverider · about 16 years, 9 months ago
In reply to Freedom of speech is nonexisten here on TR from what I see.
I believe in total freedom of speech but when you are on TR website you are on private property just as if you walked in to someones home. The owner of the home can and most likely will set rules and if you violate those rules you will be subject to the consequences.
So what can you do? Well in a free market you can set up your own competing business and set your own rules for that business if your business is better i.e. no moderation total freedom of speech people may choose your business over your competitors business. I am not condoning the actions that the moderators take but it is their right because they have been entrusted with that power by the owner.
I also believe that the same rights should be given to the TV or radio station owners but mommy government does not see it that way in the current political climate. This is one reason why the radio and TV stations are hurting because back years ago they did not stand up for their rights and fight when they should have.

Correction: That ^ is a property rights *solution*.
by absolutely · about 16 years, 9 months ago
In reply to This is a property rights issue
The ‘issue’ is failure to understand, recognize, and fully respect that one party’s property rights (TechRepublic, here) are not equivalent to the other party’s free speech rights (WMW, in this case, but this argument will be played out a couple more times before it’s settled & well-understood). WMW & its cronies argue as if they really believe they have a right to speak freely on TR’s property.
They are mistaken.
I am not condoning the actions that the moderators take but it is their right because they have been entrusted with that power by the owner.
You don’t need to ‘condone’ anything. It is their property to use by their standards, not ours. The moderators are employees, doing a job for money. The owners assigned them that responsibility because it’s in their financial interests to do so. Professionals don’t want a forum littered with racist diatribes because it’s not only a waste of our time, it’s insulting to our hard work to suggest that we should exclude other races from free competition.

Have you seen these dumbasspunks dressed like this? It is REAL funny. They HAVE to grab their pants to keep them from falling down to their knees. They end up (instead of looking cool or tough) like little kids to when they have to go the the bathroom REAL BAD and are holding themselves.
This was a blip on the news a few daze ago, but nothing big, and nothing racist. I personally see more whites dressed like this, but that is because there IS mostly whites in the area? hmmmmmm. I didn’t know that it’s not common in the US.
by neilb@uk · about 16 years, 9 months ago
In reply to Do you happen to know the origin of that expression?
In the UK, it’s one of those words commonly used to replace swearing when describing something particularly bad. i.e. “That film last night was a load of old pants”, “Liverpool were complete pants”. “Pants” just arrived – around ten years ago, maybe – like many such words. It doesn’t appear to be regional and I can’t find any idea as to the origin.
It is sufficiently ubiquitous to have been used by our Home Secretary who, a few years ago, described an Afghani’s asylum request as a “pile of pants”.
😀

And I’m an atheist and therefore completely outside of sin and I can therefore cast all of the stones that I want. In this case, I did want and I chose to throw them at a racist git.
Personally, I did it without anger as it was done to demonstrate my distaste with this guy’s series of posts. Sometimes, I believe, I even did it with humour – well, sarcasm was intended but that’s close enough. Anyway, like everyone else, I’d stopped slagging Why?? a couple of days since and I’m now enjoying a discourse with my on-line friends on other topics in a typical TR thread hijack.

Well,
by neilb@uk · about 16 years, 9 months ago
In reply to Yeah, I’m a newbie to this site but not to IT. So what did WMW do exactly?
He’s always been a fairly excitable poster but he lost it completely in a thread on H-1B visas and went off on a series of racist anti-Indian posts, some directed at India-based peers, that had to be censored.
TR isn’t usually moderated and you can get away with quite a lot on the off-topic threads. To get a post edited out, another peer has to flag it up by using the ‘mark as spam’ button and then the TR moderator, Beth, has to concur that the post is either spam or sufficiently objectionable before anything is done. Beth doesn’t have a reputation for over-reacting yet she chose to edit out a number of this guy’s posts, warn him and then – finally – kill his account.
It takes a lot to get to the account-banning stage!
Now that was a real shame for everyone as he’d been on TR for a year or two and had, judging by his accounts stats, been helpful to other peers.
He then came straight back with a new account and started this thread to whine about his treatment. The combination of the original racist posts – some of which garbage I read and for the rest I trust Beth’s judgement – AND this whiny thread and his response to peers’ criticism in it was just too much for most of us, got him crapped on by all and sundry AND got his account banned again.
Then we just hihacked the thread and went way, way off-topic as occasionally happens.
Be aware, if you haven’t already noticed, that the ‘off-topic’ flagged threads are seriously NOT about IT!
Neil 😀

In reply to Well,
Perhaps the guy is blaming an entire culture for this whole H1-B situation. I agree that the entire H1-B situation has run amock and needs to be curtailed to some extent, but the folks in India can’t be blamed for this. It’s the greedy U.S. corporations that are selling us out and flooding IT with cheap labor, and who can blame foreigners for wanting to come to the USA to earn money? Heck…I am foreign born and my folks immigrated to this country over 30 years ago for the exact same reason…to have a better life.

Unless, of course, it’s a recipe.
Or a discussion about taxidermy.
Hunting.
Or that surreal journey we had through France and Spain back in my student days which we christened “International Dead Dog Day” when the side of the roads seemed to be littered with dead animals and we started to score points for spotting them and the rules said that we had to stop every 100 at a bar and I got so pissed that I ran off the road somewhere in La Mancha which, luckily, is as flat as a pancake otherwise I probably wouldn’t be posting this drivel today.

We have a lot of deer on the side of the road, fat and bloated, ready to pop.
As we get more and more populated, there is less hunting, and in some areas it has really become a problem.

I always look to see a joined date before I weigh the postings and often will just ignore them if it’s one of those first day posts. I realize that makes me prejudgiced but habits are hard to break. TR is one of the most active forums I’ve found on the web in the past six years and that’s saying alot. I haven’t found many with the number of members and the number of actively particpating posters. Not since Stanford closed their BBS in the early 90’s. New sites pop up all the time but have nowhere near the attendance and participation.. Some are active with unregistered members but I don’t count guests. I really enjoy TR and don’t want to see ANYONE drag it down or berate it or its bonifide members in any way.

No matter the medium, as the number of participants increase so too do the number of paths taken. An interesting exercise can be had by being at the end of a thread, comparing it to the opening line, and trying to recall all of the intervening steps.
A friend & I once bugged a party that we hosted, with several recorders & mikes, for the very purpose of such an exercise. We never did figure out how it came to be that Charlie was giving a solitary recitation of “The Charge of the Light Brigade.”

Talk about “taking the bait”. WOW, Why Me Worry sure got all of you “hooked” into this decidedly non-technical discussion. BTW, WTF!
Did that offend? They’re just letters….
Bet I can bait some of you, too!
Come on people, it’s a TECHNICAL forum. Hit some the .alt.alt.alt sites if you really want some non-PC stuff.
Sorry to all who have taken this topic so seriously, but after reading a 100 or so, the light came on and I realized you’d all been snookered by this dude.
Have fun, laugh about it, forget about it…
Life goes on.-

Bait? Very bad assumption on your part.
Judging from your Post History, I’d venture a guess that you’ve no clue re. the background of WMW. However, if you’d first read this thread, you would have had one.
Snookered? Yes, you were.

Don’t you just hate it when some bean counter somewhere has left your a$$ to flap in the wind over something?
My company is industrial. Some of the plant equipment has a controller that is actually just a PC (that we didn’t know about).
Well, the system died, so the plant is dead in the water. ~oh great~ “can’t you fix this computer? Isn’t that what you guys do?”
Sure, we can fix the computer, but of course the company that provides it will not provide the software to run the plant, but they WILL load a new system and send it out within a week. Only cost $6500, plus shipping. Oh, and because of past conflicts, we will need a check in-hand before we do anything….. ~wtf?~
Got to love it…. That is what kept me on the road over half of last week. After we get the system, it wouldn’t friggen work! There was a bug in the software… ~grrrr~
“Oh, we don’t do dial-in support anymore, we come in over the internet”. fine and dandy, but there is no network run out to that building….. ~sigh~ I made a 150 foot patch cable and ran it over for the few hours they needed it, and then coiled it back up.
Was not, and am not, happy about that situation.

I was reading along and was about to post this exact message.
You’re giving him what he wants.
Let the board admins shut him up, or just ignore him.Peace, and have a great weekend all.
Edit* Before deepsand takes offence 😉 thought I would clarify… I don’t care where or how anyone posts, but I still think you were giving him what he wanted. No, I did not spend time looking over his post history.

I disagree with the contention that “we” gave him what he wanted. What he wanted was support from others and/or the means to continue with his offensive behavior.
He attained neither; and, in a manner which should make clear to him that he will not succeed in those regards.
May the Future be Kind.
PS – Bear in mind that TR’s staff makes no attempts to proactively identify & take action re. miscreants; rather, they react to incidents as they are reported by members.
