    Frozen Cursor

    Locked

    by bobkroeger ·

My desktop computer has been having a frozen cursor incident about once a day (it can happen at any time and has happend during scans (McAfee, defragging, etc). Ctrl-alt-del
doesn’t work so I have to do a restart on the tower. Are there diagnositic tools available to find what is causing this. I have XP Pro
sp3 with all the updates. I have run several virus scans (including MS, Symantec, TrendMicro) and have found nothing suspicious.
Thank you in advance, Bob K.

      Have you:

Cleaned up tmp files and internet files?

Checked the event logs for errors or warnings?

Does a full virus scan finish and come up clean?

      Are your Windows updates current?

Has anything changed since the problem started (e.g hardware/software install/upgrade)?

Is there a dump file? If you know how to read it, the answer may be as simple as a video or mouse driver.

I apologize for all of the questions but any of these, or a combination of them, could be your answer.

Do you hear anything from the hard drive at this time?

Like, just as the cursor freezes, do you hear a click in the hard drive? Can you see the HDD activity LED lit at this time? Is it lit solid, or blinking as the HDD is being accessed?

Is this happening WHILE the defragging or McAfee scan is running? In other words, is the system busy?
