Game networking

By dannylucky ·
I'm not very good in the networking field but it does interest me. My problem goes as follows: I use Windows 98 and I'm trying to establish a dial-up connection with a friend (Win Me) (which does not have the internet). Would it be possible to establish a connection with him to do game playing w/o the internet and if so how? I would appreciate your help thank you

Hi,

Yes. Its is possible. You need to use RAS to make the connection between you PCs.

RAS allows two PCs to make a TCP/IP connection over a dialup phone line. You'll probably need to install RAS - its an option in the add/remove windows components and I think is named "Remote Access Service"

At least one person of you (or both) needs to set up the RAS connection to be dial and answer.

Once you've done that (both of you), then one dials the other and a network connection is made between your PCs.

...then you choose LAN on your game.

For further information on setting up RAS, look in the windows help. It describes setting it up.

Cheers (and good gaming...),
Tim.

Oh, I should mention that you also need to set up "networking" on the dialup connection. Choose IP adresses 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 for the two PCs.

Its possible that you'll also edit your hosts file to include each others definitions too. It can be found in... c:\windows\system\drivers\etc\hosts.sam

The hosts.sam file is an example file. You need to copy it to just hosts and add...

192.168.0.1 "Your PC Name"
192.168.0.2 "Your Friends PC Name"

I think that should do it...
Cheers,
Tim.

Based on your update and the fact your friend does not have internet access and you guys are not connected to a network and the game does not give an option to connect via modem, I have to say that you are out of luck.
