How good or bad are genric inkjet cartridge refills and replacements for an Epson Color Stylus 740? Does anyone have any experience with them?

Not only are refills prone to leaks, but there are several other issues with them as well. The solids that are suspended in the ink are abrasive, and tend to ream out the inside of the nozzle opening over time, resulting in a loss of resolution anddecrease in print quality. Also, the tiny nozzles are micro-miniature thermo-electric devices, using tiny heating coils to heat the ink in the nozzles. These coils are only good for so many thousands of uses. I have had to service printers in which the ink nozzle coils have shorted out due to overuse from refilling, causing damage to the controller board. It is just not worth it in the long run.

I used generic ink cartridges in our Epsons for the last 6 months as a test. I am going back to Epson brand. About 1 in 5 did not work out of the box. The rest lasted only about 1/4 as long. Plus with issue of damage to the printer I decided thecost savings was not real.
