gMail new format issue

By JADavis9 ·
On my desktop pc, I think that I clicked on a Log In or Log Off button that popped up at the start and suddenly my desktop pc is displaying my online gMail in this new format page layout that doesn't have a Sign Out button like it did and like it still does on my tablet pc. Both are WinXP with IE8.
So now the Sign Out is down in a dropdown box below my name. I want to get back to the former style with a Sign Out link always visible next to my name up there.
Someone at TR helped me delete some cookies a few weeks ago to help me get back to the old format gMail site. Can someone help me do this again?
It involved deleting the Google cookies last time, but I've tried that and I'm getting no where. I NEED SOME HELP, PLEASE!

I've never used Firefox or anything other than IE

by JADavis9 In reply to gMail new format issue

I think that I'd like to stick with IE. Could you tell me why I might want to consider switching? I don't seem to have any problems or issues with IE and I kind of like keeping things as simple and known as I can!

you could try looking in . . .

by Who Am I Really In reply to gMail new format issue

C:\Documents and Settings\You\Cookies

but you might not find all that you need in there
as some settings are stored in the "Other location"

if you don't find everything you need in there
"C:\Documents and Settings\You\Cookies"

then you'll have to go into the folders below:

C:\Documents and Settings\You\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\

and the only way to do that from within your user account is to follow the method I outlined in a previous post

the other way to directly access those folders
is by logging into the system with a different Administrative User account and navigating there

winders is crazy letting every other user see what's below:

C:\Documents and Settings\Every Other User\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\

but you can't look into yer own without the little hack !

exporting the cookies shouldn't be all that hard
it should be easy if the user account names are the same on both machine

otherwise renaming the cookies from
otheruser@whatever site they were at
to
you@whatever site you were at

still might not work

not to nitpick
but
"...I don't seem to have any problems or issues with IE"

isn't this whole thread about a problem with IE not displaying the correct page layout for Gmail?

I'm not going to attempt to twist IE out of your hands
but I will say this
I don't trust IE any more than I'd trust a pedo teaching my kids in kindergarten

cheers

A couple of observations here...

by SmartAceW0LF In reply to gMail new format issue

Before beginning, allow me to pitch your question to you just to make sure we are on the right page. You prefer to use the familiar settings of gmail as described here ---> http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd364/SmartAceW0LF/gmailsettings.jpg <---as "Basic HTML View". Further, you wish it to appear the same in every desktop you logon to correct?

I could be missing something here as I do not have a Facebook account and could not reference the other pics you mentioned. All of gmail's advanced features are coded in Java. If setting your options to "always use basic HTML" fails to give you familiar screens, I think I would look to the settings within IE. Perhaps resetting all to "Default" might get you there. I will pause here to warn against going in there and arbitrarily trying different settings as I have observed some users browsers in the past that had a really crappy appearance due to restricting Java too much. It was a real p.i.a. to straighten it out to where it once again looked correct.

You may very well consider changing to standard view anyway. The photo on the left of the link I posted above is my gmail with standard view enabled (as well as labs). It looks exactly the same no matter what I login with irrespective of operating system andor browser.

Edit: note the circles at the top right of each window of the picture I posted. The little scroll button at the top right of the left hand picture reveals a logoff setting. Yes, it does take a full 2 milliseconds longer to get to. Dammit man, will the issues just continue to stack up until we lose it? Somebody get a rope!

Setting it to Basic HTML view is what I wanted. Thanks! I clicked a button that said it would set Basic HTML as the default view.

I'm not sure if all of that crap after your word Edit: was aimed at me or what it was all about. If that crap was aimed at me, let me ask you and the others like that welding idiot to please don't lean so hard on me or on anyone else on this site or anywhere else in life. I've always tried to ask politely for help here and I have been going through some really bad stuff physically, mentally, financially and even computerly due to a motorcycle accident I had in 2007 that should have killed me but instead only gave me a severe brain injury. My anti-depressant doesn't get me up when mean guys kick me down like Santee does. I sure don't need to be kicked around by folks who seem to have it all together like it seems like I used to have.
Heck, I even got to drive in some NASCAR Winston Cup races not too long ago after winning pole positions, races, rookie of the year and even championship in some lower pro racing series and I have owned and operated my own businesses pretty successfully for my whole life until I had an accident that almost killed me.
So I'm just begging for a little kindness from everyone here. Please get off your "high horses", those of you who are so well rehearsed at being mean to us other guys. You must have really been misstreated at some point in your life (and I'm talking about you Santee)

I couldn't find a "reply" button beneath your last comment JADavis9 so I had to reply to my own. Dammit man the issues just continue to stack up. No sir, I did not mean any harm by my edit. I merely observed that I had forgotten to include it. The statement was meant to convey that though trivial, you can have it your way, and as such I included it. The "Somebody get a rope" comment was humorously meant to endorse your problem and even get in the fight with you. Exxagerated as it may sound for such a small offence. I do try not to flame and apologize for failing to be more clear in my post. That said, I am glad the problem is resolved. How about a vote for plus in the post. I may get a cookie someday for it, who knows? Good day to you.

complaints about how this site works

by JADavis9 In reply to gMail new format issue

I guess that I am either really stupid or this site isn't user friendly, or both.
In my Outlook 2003, I got an email from this site and halfway down the email it said:

So I clicked on that lower "response" link and I come to this page now on 5/13 his reply is buried in the middle of the postings. So I need to go back to the email and remember the time and date that he sent it and then look for it.
Come on site builder! This ain't good.... It isn't user friendly and it gets really difficult to find things after there have been many Replies if my Question isn't Answered quickly!
And why isn't this Alert Me ... box pre-checked? Why do I need to remember to manually check it before I click Add Your Opionion?

Welcome to the New World Order according tot the Site builders at TR.

They took a perfectly easy site to use and messed it up completely with their new Site Redesign. Things have got so bad that many of the old Regulars have left the house in disgust and those of us left are not attempting to follow anything any longer.

If nothing else besides killing any way to follow anything if you can even find it again after leaving the page it's killed the Sense of Community that used to be here. No no one can follow anything longer than 3 or 4 posts.

I'll try to find something to Vote for Plus. I've never done that. Oh, I just found it. It is an icon looking thing that says 0 Votes and + or -.
Wow, I never saw that befire. Maybe that's why some guys on this site seem to dislike me? Hmmm

There is even a Reply button below your Reply COL/OH Smeg!

by JADavis9 In reply to gMail new format issue

So I had to go down below my last Reply below it and fill this out in the ANSWER THE QUESTION boxes.
Come on site builders .... this site needs to be simpler to use and be much more straight forward to use. I know you can do it, so do it please! I'm not a techy person and I've never used any forums except for this one, Microsoft Answers which I have been using to solve a few issues and a Facebook Video help forum to solve one upload issue.
And would you please have it check the Alert Me box below this Comment box by default so I don't need to remember to check it but I can uncheck it if I find a Question from someone else and reply to it (which I've never done) and I don't want to be Alerted?
