Google is pinging my router?

By jjd226 ·
I just set up a NetGear prosafe VPN Firewall. It is currently a part of the network, but is not directing traffic in any sort of way yet. I am doing this for configuration purposes.

I have the router configured to e-mail me if it detects port scanning of DoS attacks. I did not expect to see any hits on this router, but sure enough, in my e-mail I am getting a message warning me of port scanning.

the IP address is I checked it and I do get routed to, i did a reverse lookup as well and everything leads me to google. It appears to be hitting different ports a lot of the time, but it always hits the ip address that this router is on.

Why is google scanning for open ports so far down my network steam? and does anyone else seem to have this problem?

First of all, do you think it's wise to publish your public IP address here

Also, I doubt Google is performing a port scan on you and probably some script kiddie or wannabe hacker spoofing an address to make it look like it's from Google.

Re-read it dear.......

The IP he posted was the one DOING the scanning, not his.

While I don't disagree with you about it probably being a script kiddie spoofing an IP address, especially since it's multiple hits, I have to point out that Google gets their cached web pages somehow. Yeah, they scan.

google scans web pages

by LocoLobo In reply to Google is pinging my rout ...

they hit our iis server about 1/week. I don't have access to our router but presumably they leave tracks there too. You would think they wouldn't be scanning a router without a web page present.

If you don't want them there try the Google Webmaster Help Center:

There's a link there titled "How do I block gooblebot?"
