Google Phone!?

By Nick_Student ·
I've been reading recently about the Google's intention to get to the mobile market. According to some articles that are floating around the Net, Google is ready to bid on the 700 MHz frequency bandwidth, which will be available in January'08. Their initial idea is to create a network where everybody should be able to come with mobile device which would be open (meaning that all functions offered by the device would be usable), and you could install whatever you want, and modify the functionality the way you want.
The idea itself is pretty exciting and shows that someone is getting tired of all the mobile operators in the USA that are selling "pre-programmed" devices to their taste (no names mentioned, we all know who they are...)
What I wonder here is how fast Google would be able to supply the end-user with service? Handsets are easy to create and mass produce, whereas coverage and service are the main keys in this field.
Are they going to need to install new tower around the country, or they will be able to use the current infrastructure created by the current mobile companies?
These are the thoughts that make me ponder lately...
Otherwise I'm curious and anxious to see how all of that would work, and how it will be accepted by the mobile phone society (which accounts about a few million people in the USA).
