GROW a SECURITY tool-kit and Pass It On

By larsmith ·
For starters, take the time NOW to go to :

Read carefully what you find there and see if you agree that effective security is an attitude and that it is ENHANCED by pro-active cooperation.

Secondly, consider implementing either arbitrary, strategic or corporate-wide PERSONAL firewalls.

Thirdly, in recognition of the fact that 50 - 80 percent of all troubles happen within the "trusted" network, make sure to protect mission-critical systems by placing a firewall(s) between those machines and the "trusted" network.

Fourthly, make sure IDS is configured to detect suspicious activity from the "trusted" network. I can guarantee that if you don't, you'll live to regret the oversight !

Next, discover tools like TCMonitor and TCActive as well as Tesseract. Add to your arsenal of network tools a freware / "public domain" network / protocol analyzer like Ethereal or acquire NetworkView.

Don't wait for people to hand you solutions. Do what many proactive security officers are doing today and GO LOOKING for solutions.

Finally, when you get a hot tip, pass it on.
Recognize that hackers are well motivated to make us look like total idiots. Recognize that often they don't have to work hard to do that. Purpose to change that.

Recognize that even "excelleng" security won't keep out ALL the hackers, just MOST of them.

Therefore, your goal is to MINIZE the RISK.

The work will never be totally done. Therefore, don't stop being pro-active in finding tools which will make your job as EFFECTIVE and as EASY as possible.

If you haven't visited, please do so and make yourself part of the SOLUTION.
