Shall I tell you, then?

"wifebeater"

I can see where this might come from in our lovely culture, but to refer to a tank top this way for general use make me want to heave. I mean, WTF?

Let us never speak of it again. :-&

I should have chosen a different example.

Bloody **** Mate

by Jacky Howe In reply to uh

I know a lot of shearers and labourers that wore them and I doubt that they were all wife beaters. Bloody kids there ought to be a law against having them.

I feel that it has all been taken out of context but my OH reminded me of some old movies that portrayed the villain in a white singlet.

I think it's U.S. TV & movies, actually

Every time the cops have to respond to a "domestic", the guy invariably looks like this:

It's easier to portray a guy as slovenly and disgusting (and a likely wife-beater)when you can see his his impossibly large bush of chest and axillary hair, and the thin, torn, and greying cotton ribbed tank top undershirt has stains on it.

Really nothing like the original Jacky Howe, or most other tank top type things for that matter, but somehow it is a somewhat popular nomenclature. Go figure. Actually, I believe the first time I ever heard it was from some chick who suggested that I'd be cooler if I wore a w-b. "!WTF did you just say?"
