Hi,

currently i have purchase a new hardisk IBM 30.7 GB.

because my PC doesn’t have CD-ROM, so i try to install the Win98 by using another PC with CD-ROM.

I successfully install the WIN98 by using the PC with CD-ROM.

after that i try to put the hardisk into my PC which is without CD-ROM.

after that i reboot the system, it said that cannot detect any primary master hardisk. after that the naother error messages:
error boot disk failure, please insert boot disk.

i try to insertthe boot disk, the error message “disk contains invalid FAT32 partitoon.and etc”

i try to type command c: and it doesn’t contains the WIN98 files at all.

i have some questions:
1)how can install win98 into the PC without CD-ROM ? i mean by network installation. please show me the steps clearly.

2)May I know what are the problems causes above prob ??

3)did you have any idea how can i solve the prob, i try few hardisk, the same error comes out. this time the hardisk is new . i try toput the hardisk into the PC with CD-ROMand it works, the WIn98 can run smoothly.

4)is above error causes by CMOS setting but i didn’t change any CMOS setting at all

5) i try to put the CD-ROM into my PC , i can use the CD-ROM in win98, but when i use the setup disk to boot the system, i try to find the cdrom, it said that no driver was loaded and i can’t setup from the CD-ROm.
how can i use the cdrom in DOS ??

You didn’t say what the jumpers were set for on your HDD. When you had it in the machine with the CD-Rom, did you have it set as the primary master? When you installed it into the machine without the CD-Rom, did you have the jumpers set for master, did you have it on the proper cable connection for master? Is the CMOS set up correctly? Does your bootdisk have CD-Rom drivers?

You go into CMOS setting during post, follow the instruction. It’s either the ‘Del’ key or a combination of ‘Ctrl’,’Alt’ and ‘Esc’ key. Once there ensure that the value for your harddisk is set to’Auto’, change only if you are sure of the CHS (Cylinder,Heads and Sector) value. Save the setting and reboot the system. Before you go into the CMOS, check that your harddisk is correctly installed. Master Drive on Primary IDE, etc.
Upon restart, ensure you have the boot-up disk in place with supportfor CD-ROM drive. If you don’t have that, you can make one by going over to the system with Win98 already installed. From the Control Panel, choose Add/Remove program. The last tab will enable you to create the boot-up disk. Follow the instruction there and you won’t go wrong. With this boot-up disk you can do whatever you want at DOS.

Is the PC with the CDROM the same make and model of the PC you are putting the hard drive into, if it is not you are bound to run into problems with the chipsets of the main board and even if you did get it to boot it would never work right.
If youhave access to a PC with a CDROM why don’t you take it out and put it in the machine you are trying to load, its a ten minute job and it will save you a lot of headaches.

Sorry I did not see your last comment, you will need WIN98 boot disk that has CDROM support.

I agree with the third response.
Win 98 boot disk’s doesn’t reconize the older CD’s that are on 486 2X’s etc.
How about installing win 95 then use the upgrade CD for Win 98?

I had the same problem with my 486. My solution was to install 95 and upgrade to 98 since I had the 98 upgrade from work.The other solution I had was to have the hard drive and the CD together on the same ribbon. Thus connecting the CD into the slave connection on the ribbon. And all went fine. I then reinstalled the older CD with the drivers and it worked. I can’t say this will work for you but it doesn’t hurt to try

This may not answer your entire answer directly, but here is what I would do:
1. Put the hard drive into the system with the CD-Rom drive.
2. Partition and format the hard drive as you want it to be. Then create the following directory structure:\Windows\Options\Cabs.
(You can use a different directory structure, but this is cosidered by many to the the standard location for cabs.)
3. Copy the files from the Windows 98 CD in the Win98 folder to the Cabs folder. If doing it from dos, it would be
“xcopy :\win98\*.* :\Windows\options\cabs /s /e
4. Put the new hard drive into the system without the CD-Rom drive.
5. Boot to floppy disk and run setup from the C:\Windows\Options\Cabs folder. Just be sure to change the default installation folder from C:\Windows.000 to C:\Windows.

I’m curious. I had a friend with a similar problem of not being able to get her new 20GB hard disk recognized. After she told me the machine was purchased in 1995, I suggested she go to a website and download an upgrade to her bios (flash her bios). After she did this her 20G hard drive was recognized.
