Has “social networking” gone to far?

A friend told me about putting stuff in her wishlist, but not for a particular store site.

Nooo, she had to go use a site that will keep your list for ANY store.

http://www.thethingsiwant.com

What’s up with that?
Are people just that greedy they have to beg for people to buy them things?

Is it any wonder so many people are over extended with their credit and are living pay check to pay check? No, not really.

Everyone sees all the CRAP on TV and HAVE to have it all.

“Stuff” won’t fill the empty meaningless void that is their miserable existences…..

Filling the void with ‘stuff’ continues to be less attractive the older I get. I care very little for material things. (Trust me, if any of you could see my house, you’d believe me). Our dining room table was bought at a yard sale for $5 over 10 years ago. I don’t care if my dishes match. My furniture is barely functional, because it’s pointless to buy anything new as long as I have boys in the house.

Of course, we won’t discuss purses and shoes. But, we ALL need a hobby, right? Even if it’s a terribly shallow hobby.

I have no problem with your shoes/purses. If you find something as simple as that to make you happy, who am I to rain on that parade? 😀

I like knives and add to the collection all the time. Got a cool one my brother brought back from Equidor for me when he was stationed at the embassy. Of course, your “hobby” is a little easier to take out in public…. ;\

Furniture? Two years ago, I didn’t HAVE any furniture. Everything I have now is from friends and relatives. They are comfy.

I am more about FUNCTIONAL “stuff” now, like outdoors cloths for me and the Things. Stuff so we can DO stuff.

The thing I WANT now is a kayak.

Okay, that’s in addition to the purses and shoes. And the occasional mani and pedi. Or spa treatment.

I’m spoiled, Check the diamonds. And the other toys.

I keyboard too much to bother with the mani too much.
The pedi is a requirement once the walking begins.

I will spend over $600 for shoes for the 3 Day alone. And
I need new socks. Many more new socks. Very expensive
new socks.

I like my sports bras but will need shirts and maybe
shorts. Did I mention socks?

I think that the SO will love having my head shaved. So
much easier for him to wash and condition my hair if
there isn’t much of it.

but absolutely fine for those whose hobbies includes Schadenfreude…

Have you or any of your walking chums had any experience with my latest problem? I did a two-day trek three weeks ago covering about 35 miles of one of our long-distance footpaths.

The North Downs/Pilgrims’s Way if you’re interested http://tinyurl.com/yquwb7

Lots of up and down over the North Downs. The last couple of miles was all downhill on a gravel road. Both of my big toenails took a serious beating and, yesterday, one of them came off as I was cutting it and I reckon that its mate will follow in a few days. It was (mostly) painless and I’m pretty certain that it’ll grow back again OK but it would be nice to get this confirmed!

I believe that my walking shoes were maybe a half-size too small, the nails not cut close enough and the shoes not laced tight enough for the long downhill. I’m due for some new shoes, anyway, but it would be nice to see if you’ve run across this, O Mistress Of The Sock.

In reply to Talking of walking – not for the squeamish!

Good for you doing that long walk!

Having never done that long of a walk, longest I ever did was a 9 mile MS trek, I still think your hypothesis has a sound basis, and that the downhill was probably more painful than you’re letting on. I’m sure your toenails will grow back, but if they don’t, well, at least they’d never fall off again.

by neilb@uk ·

In reply to Ouch

So far, one has gone and it is growing back and it’s about .25 inches long. The one that fell off went sort of grey – no pain at all. The right one is a strange uniform pink colour and much darker that it used to be and its fate is uncertain…

Trust me! The downhill WAS painful and I hobbled into the station, sat on the train and when we got to my stop I nearly couldn’t get off!

The thing that REALLY boggles me is that this was just over HALF of what Tigger does! We are not worthy! For what EITHER of you are doing!

by tig2 ·

In reply to Talking of walking – not for the squeamish!

Buy your walking shoes in the evening after you have done your average day
in the office. They (your feet) should be at their largest then and a bit more
sensitive than they would be in the morning.

Your toenails will grow back. Keep a plaster or duct tape on your affected
toes until the nail comes in. Keep the area clean. H2O2 bath every day for
those toes and a foot rub to encourage circulation will help.

I will peer you with some photos of how I lace my shoes to keep the toe firm
but not tight and still allow some give at the arch where much of the walking
work happens.

A trek of 35 miles is not a light undertaking. My guess is that you were
electrolyte starved for at least a portion of that walk. You also have to be
careful to stop and rest through a long walk. On the event, they have us stop
every 3.5 miles or so to hydrate and check feet.

Preventatives. Many choices. On the day before a long walk, I like to oil and
rub my feet. Gets the circulation going and is good for the skin. Before the
walk, I wrap my small toes with duct tape. I use a product called BodyGlide all
over my feet and dual layer socks. When I set my foot in
my shoe, I fit the shoe like I used to fit pointe shoes- a firm fit from the toe
to the heel, as if the sole was glued to the bottom of my foot, firm around
the toe, comfortable at the arch, firm at the ankle.

If your toenails are too long, it will cause problems no matter how well you fit
your shoes. I use a pumice stone lightly on my feet to clear away dead skin.
It tends to keep the nail at the ends of the toe. If I can feel the edge of the
nail through my socks, I clip the nail.

After 10 miles (eight, even) change your socks. If you use BodyGlide or other
lubricant, apply more. Clean dry socks will make your feet happy. On long
training walks, we keep our socks in the ice chest- zip top bags and as close
to the ice blocks as possible. Putting ice cold socks on hot tired feet is a real
treat.

Finally- on a long downhill, remember that you are working harder than you
do walking uphill. Try walking backwards for a pace. It tends to help. Also
step off the trail every so often and hydrate.

I can’t begin to tell you how proud I am of you for doing this and sticking with
it. I will have to talk you into walking the event with me over your holidays.
You’d love it! And I know that you can walk 60 miles!

Edit- clarity and coffee deprivation

Thanks for the tips!

by neilb@uk ·

In reply to Neil, buddy- a few solutions

All good advice! I’ve set out to do the full length of this walk – 165 miles – at one section per weekend, the shortest being around 9 miles and the longest 15. My problem was that I did the first section and it was too easy, with few climbs and nice sandy paths so I reckoned that I could do the second section on the following day. That had more hills, more mud and the long downhill path that killed my toes. It’s not been hurting so I’ve done sections three and four and I’m on schedule.

Most of the sports shops sell Bodyglide so I’ll give that a try and OF COURSE I use double-layer socks and I’ve not had a blister since I first took your advice on socks – it was very easy to prove right!

I’ll post some photos when I get the chance. We seem to be having the start of Spring already here and I’ve already started to pick some of the hedgerow and forest food that I use for one of my other hobbies, cooking. On Saturday, I had a wild garlic omelette.

You NEED to start your own web page.

The focus? How to walk. The gear you need, the tips on care of feet, all of it.

You have so many good tips spread around TR, but it is hard to find them all.

And if this walking web site just HAPPENS to help promote three daze of walking for a cause, so much the better! B-)

If you got it into the google world of walking, I would BET it would increase the amount of people walking the walk AND the amount of people sponsoring you in your walk. Of course I would keep the main focus on walking in general with a section that is a 3day focus and the links.

And thank you so much. For everything!

I’ll send you a scarf. After you do this, you will want to
keep your scalp as protected as possible. My favorite trick
was to find loose sleeved sweaters at the thrift store and
cut the sleeves off. The sleeve (you want about 8 to 10
inches) can then be worn on your head- covers like a knit
hat, but lighter.

Also, remember to use your regular conditioner on your
scalp, even if you don’t think you need to. Use about half
as much as you would with your hair the length it is now.

Call Locks of Love or find them on the net. Hair donated
to them will make wigs for kids in chemo.

You are so awesome!

All good ideas. I like the sweater from the thrift store in particular.

My hair was about 15 inches longer than it now is several months ago and I donated it then to locks of love. The picture on my shavee page was actually taken right after that hair cut. I was kind of hoping it would grow a little more than it has in the past few months, but alas, I do not have the requisite 10 inches of hair.

Your support really does mean a lot to me. Sometimes, getting to go back and do a sucky thing again, but on your own terms is a good feeling.

March 15 is when the head shaving is happening, so thankfully I won’t have to worry too much about freezing weather. AND, most of the classrooms whose computers I support are out on spring break the week after so I’ll have a week’s worth of stubble before having to go see the middle and high school kids.

I’ve run into a lot of opposition from my relatives who think a woman getting her head shaved for any cause is ludicrous… My favorite response is to tell them that it’s been a while since I had a haircut that really peeved my mother, and getting to peeve her for a good cause is a win-win.

All part of feeding the system. If everyone is always asking “what do you want”, there are always those that will stand up and say I want “this, this, this, this, and that!”

A card and a hummer is great for all occasions? ;\

friends, occasionally acquaintances, employees…
And sometimes ‘practical’ is not personal (to us) in the way we would like it to be.
In those cases, it would be nice if folks shared pieces of their personal wish lists.

But that whole public out-on-the-internet-bare-naked-greed thing that is a wish-list published for the world to see is kind of creepy and sickening.

we have made up “holidays” like valentines day and sweetests day. Both are bought into, hook/line/wallet, by the female population. Both are a bunch of BS to any thinking human (men)

How many people go thousands into debt for Christmas? If you don’t spend enough money on me, I won’t know if you love me? Give me a friggen break.

Anniversary gifts? Nothing but a bribe to allow you to get to the next anniversary.

Birthday gifts? for what? Birthday gifts should go the the parents that provided the birth to show your thanks.

Sys admin day is a very valid occasion to celebrate though…. ;\

making me very SAD! 😀

Gift-buying has gone way too far in this nation at any rate. My favorite thing about Christmas has always been spending the year preceding it picking up small items that mean something to both me and the recipient. Getting thousands of dollars into debt for it is ridiculous and way outside the spirit of the holiday. Spend all the money on me that you want, but if it’s spent on things that are obviously outside of my interests and tastes, that tells me you don’t know me at all and haven’t been paying attention through the years. I’d much rather receive something small and APPROPRIATE (eny) than gobs of stuff I don’t like.

Oh, and PITA that marriage is, damn right you better bribe me to fight through another year! 😀

ENY=emphasis not yelling

That it is International Neil Day on Feb 29 this year. It only comes around once every four years so if you’ll just send me your Kayak Money for this year, I’ll tick you off my list.

🙂

Maybe a fanny pack too. You really must learn to hydrate.

A “fanny pack” in the UK really, REALLY doesn’t mean the same as it does in the US.

Hmmmm…..This site might be more useful than I thought

by dadspad ·

In reply to Has “social networking” gone to far?

My first reaction was another site for lists.

I went to the site and it lists things people are asking for. [I never knew what a quiglite was] So it can give you ideas of what others are asking for!!

If you have a family with children, a wanted gift list is very handy. Children are always wanting to know what a parent wants (just get me anything!), especially when the child believes he/she has outgrown the ‘I made it myself’ stage.

Have you ever bought a thoughtful gift from someone, then found they had taken it back to get something they really wanted?

Of course, it is a good site for the people that just like ‘lists’. 🙂
