Have I got a virus? Or has TR added adverts to the Threads?

By OldER Mycroft ·
I'm only asking because any previous Unexpected browser content has always had a ~Porn~ angle to it.

This is the first time I've felt like running a full system scan before realising the content is ALL computer/IT related.

Just to make sure we are all on the same page, can you describe which elementsin the screenshot you are referring to? The ads in the TR sidebar, the links all over the browser toolbar or what?

Apparently, new adverts have been added

And they're doing A/B testing so some people are seeing them and others aren't.

I just found out this morning but still haven't seen any of the new ads.

I have, I think

And what I saw concerned me a bit.

At the bottom of a thread on password hacking, the ads were for password tools. As in the cracking thereof.

While I know that these are legitimate tools, I don't know that associating those tools to a hacking thread is the wisest choice.

On my pc, the ads show up in green. Hmm. And only on some pages.

Green print, with links in red....

by gadgetgirl In reply to I have, I think

and I agree, Tig, those ads aren't the best association in the world.

Started after the site update last night - yes, it was 10pm GMT!!) and appears on thread pages, but it's not on this one, i.e. the reply page.

Beth? You let those guys loose on their own again?!

Now I see what you'e getting at

by Oz_Media In reply to I have, I think

The green ads that look like posts, with a button to visit the link.

I get the normal "Sponsored Links" under the posts, but not quite as nasty looking as the green bars that were shown in the screen shot.

ICK! If they are A/B testing, first feedback from me is no thanks, it is second only to those annoying porn popups when visiting the government websites. Okay, a bit of an exaggeration there, afterall Clinton isn't in office anymore.

yep, I mentioned that in another post

by w2ktechman In reply to I have, I think

but not so direct.
I was answering a PW crack post last month sometime and noticed 3 links to different tools (with free trials) for cracking PWD's. That is why I mentioned that TR has ads for PW cracks so I toned down my nasty replies.

well that and the fact that somebody thought that my nuke your PC was a real script to crack a PW. Reminded me that some non-technical people visit as well.

The PPC Ads at the bottom are selected for Content Match.

by deepsand In reply to I have, I think

I.e., the content of the text in the Discussion is scanned, and PPC Ads of a nature whose keywords match that content are, if available, selected for display. It's done automatically by the ad servers.

The "Sponsored Links" that we're used to seeing at the bottom of the page are Google AdWords listings.
