Hello everyone!

Locked

by jocey ·

Hi I’m jocey and it’s good to be here. I found out about this website via a good family friend and of course I passed it on to some of my friends as well. I am currently a stundent at Sams Caribbean Limited(School of Accounting and Management) and I am pursuing a degree in Computing and Internet Systems which is awarded by the University of Huddersfield in the UK. This experience has been quite fufilling for me because I’m nuts about Computers. I hope that I can fit in well here. I am still so green as I am finding out every day but the passion to excel in this field is so great.

Let me have the privilege

by jardinier ·

In reply to Hello everyone!

of being the first person to welcome you into our “family.”

I think “family” describes the members of TechRepublic quite accurately. Like a traditional family we sometimes squabble over inconsequential things, but when a member has some personal crisis, everyone comes forward to help and offer advice.

I have belonged to this website for three years and have found it a rich experience. I have made many good friends (although they are only cyber friends) and learnt a lot about all kinds of things in the Miscellaneous section of the discussions.

The website caters equally for top IT pros and computer hobbyists like myself.

Welcome aboard.

by dc guy ·

It means “to understand.” Actually “double” is also a French word but they pronounce it with the doo- in doobie. So it literally means a double understanding.

Welcome.

My only “words of wisdom”. If you see a post that really sets you off, go back and read the whole thread to get it in context before you sound off against it. Too many will dive in before checking the temp of the water and make a fight where there isn’t one.

There are also many catagories for discussions (as you have found) so you can steer your experience acording to your interests.

Some come here and are all business, others of us tend to be a little more social and get rather silly at times. Our virtual “Water cooler”, as it has been dubbed.

There really is something here for everybody. Hope you find what your looking for.

Perhaps I’m, not Geeky enough but I have to ask the question. I’ve been involved with Computers since 1985 so I have to ask.
What in the world is and “Earwig?” Besides the Bug and how could one start it here? How does one get one. Is it a trojan Earwig, or a Malware Earwig, a back door earwig or foes it come in the fromt door? Does it come in diferent colors?

I would like to know. 🙂

Welcome aboard, jocey. Be very careful of what you write and how you write it. Every undotted ‘i’ and every uncrossed ‘t’ can and will be used against you to start a flame war. And even if you do dot all your i’s and cross all your t’s, there are some who are going to hate you because they’d rather cross their i’s and dot their t’s. You’ll see a lot of that silliness in the “Miscellaneous” section. The discussions that are more related to IT are a lot more respectful. I just wanted to give you that warning up front. Just ignore all that flaming nonsense and all the flamers if you want (or if you’re able). Or if you like pushing people’s buttons, you’ve come to the right place. A few people here have a huge red button on their forehead that says “PUSH ME!” in big letters. You can have a lot of fun with those type of people! :^O

It’s an effective use of plausible deniabiliy. Maybe you’ve heard of it. A great American hero named Bill Clinton perfected that technique in the late ’90s. I studied up on plausible deniability when I was trying to get a job in the Clinton administration in 1997. I thought maybe my knowledge of said technique would impress some of his staffers. I was applying for a job as head of his intern department. Unfortunately, those scandalous days were tough times for a handsome debonaire young stud like me to be applying for job as head of interns. They gave the job to a little old grandma. I wonder why.

Like every group, we have our Zanies, they are good Zanies, but for the most part, you will find the People at Tech Republic Kind & Considerate and ever ready to help. WE all are Techs of various forms or other and for the most part, this is where you’ll find “The Best of the Best”
Some will tease, Some will joke, but you won’t find any insults or offenses here. We all know our limitations and that’ the reason for the very existence of Tech Republic. The fact that we can all share our knowledge. So however trite or silly the question that you might need answered might seem to you, don’t be shy, post it anyway and you will be amazed at the amount of people just standing by ready to in any way we can.
I hope you find your experience here as pleasant as I have found mine and I’ve been a member since 2003.
If you have any questions on anything, this is the place. If I may, I would also suggest that you read all you can, you’ll be amazed at the vast amount of information that comes out here.
And so I close in wishing you the very best and saying, “Welcome to the Club” You’ve chosen the very best. These people are the greatest.
Which will be made clear as time goes on.
My Warmest Regards
Aaron a Baker

Hello! Jocey,

First of all, welcome to the world IT.

It’s good to hear that you have the deepest passion towards the IT.

There are so many “lines” of IT (programming, technical, networking, web development and etc). Make sure you are staying on the line of your desire and plan your career path carefully.

Lastly: –
(1) Keep up your effort
(2) stay on your “compass” (direction)
(3) Have a life-long learning to attain more knowledge
(4) Keep an eye on the IT industry outlook (because it’s a fast paced industry); and
(5) Plan your career path wisely.

Well Said Jocey

In reply to Okay

Dear Jocey;
In a matter of discussion, one must always remember that the thing that makes them interesting is their diversity.
We all have different opinion and are all entitled to voice them. That’s what these forums are all about.
If I may suggest, NEVER 🙂 ever allow yourself you be chased away, you are as worthy as any of us, and are always welcome. If your conduct is anything like the shinning start that you’ve already demonstrated, then we are bound not only to have good conversation but also interesting and very stimulating conversation on a much higher intellectual plain that has been demonstrated here by some.
If people are rude, “Obliterate” them, render them nonexistent.
As for the rest of us, it will be a joy to speak to you on any given subject at any time at all. I’m sure this is felt by all.
Please remember Jocey, do not be deterred, and above all, “Stay with us”, NEVER move over for a Jerk, ever.
When the nonsense fades away, you’ll find yourself conversing with some truly fine people not to mention some of the very best in the field.
People like HAL9000, Gadgetgirl, SGT Shultz, The Geek, DMiles, The Chas, MBower5, Rick K,JRod86, Scott Lowe, Grreg Shultz and a host of others that don’t come to mind at the moment {Please forgive me for not remembering everybody”:) }. Don’t let the creeps hurt you, they are vermin that infest every organization and when they’ve had enough of being ignored, they either change their ways of vanish altogether.
So Please take this into consideration the next time you get an insulting dolt, disregard them as they are not worth your valuable time, but don’t forget that for every one of them, there are twenty of us.
Trust me, I’ve had to ask for help and these folks have been nothing short marvelous. They are knowledgeable, well versed and extremely kind in their replies so don’t be afraid to ask.
We’re there for you kiddo, anytime.
Warmest Regards
Aaron

If you care to read his thread about his divorce, or any of his posts for that matter, you’ll see quickly that he can BS with the worst of them. I don’t give him any slack over his divorce any more, he’s been moping and stewing long enough.

His ‘initial’ divorce post was simply asking for advice. It’s hardly his fault that the thread took off. As far as his ‘whining’ most of what he’s said is what one would expect during such a difficult time. And quite frankly, I think he’s handled himself quite well for the most part.

Jeff or jd and I have been more or less friends for sometime. I tease him from time to time by calling him a liberal but I know that like me he is really a conservative, as are many others in TR. Friends do that to each other sometimes.
As for SWG, early on, I classified her as someone with problems and issues and stayed mostly clear despite her taking runs at me. I don’t know where you get the idea I am not nice to anyone.
Look at yourself. Despite boring everyone with trite and banal, blond jokes, I decided to help you from the kindness of my heart and posted all the blond jokes I have accumulated over time. Thus you would have the opportunity of being amusing sometimes.
I know what has instigated your vitriolic attitude towards me. Despite being Asian you are having a blond moment; it’s either that or:

Harleys

by neilb@uk ·

In reply to Hullo Dawg

I was a biker from my late teens until about ten years ago, latterly in the company of a loose club of a dozen old (oldish) farts. Some of these guys had been bikers back in their teens and twenties on 125/250s and had returned to biking on 900cc cafe racers with 0-60 figures of 2.4 seconds. Far too much to handle on UK roads. Me? Shaft drive Kawasaki tourers, BMW K series. During one year, five of the ten had serious biking accidents with three fatalities and one crippled.

I sold my bike that year and now, if I’m on holiday or it’s summer, I rent one.

I did rent a Harley, once, for a day’s riding on Highway 1 in California. What is the attraction? If I sat on my Beamer with it ticking over, it purred quietly and would take off with a zip and a little friendly whine as it revved up to 8 or 9K. The HD was chug-achug-achug-a – like sitting on a bloody tractor – and open the throttle and it had a little think before taking off.

Handling? Don’t make me laugh! Luckily, this was on US roads though HW1 isn’t straight! I would never ride a Harley in the UK as you wouldn’t get five miles along a country A-Road without dumping the bugger! The first time I used the brakes in anger, I nearly crapped myself. I suspect it’s the sheer weight of the damn thing because I wasn’t going that fast because I couldn’t. I don’t know how big the engine was – I reckon well over a litre – but the power seemed less than my old GT550.

Still. Looked good though.

I LOVE GG and she knows it. She is VERY smart, VERY helpful, and have been there for me anytime I needed her. ( did I mention she is a BABE? 😀 )

What you see is just bring playful and she gives as well as she gets! (sometime better! :O )

So just chill out for a bit “dude”. Just because I am not always the most serious member on TR, does not mean I am not respectful to most as deserved. Your just taking things out of context of what they are INTENDED for.

So YES, I have to SMART everyone, all the time.

Like I always say, better to be a smarta$$ than a dumba$$.

If you can’t get into the spirt of they way I post, I would recommend only reading posts of members that fit what you are looking for. Sorry to have caused you so much distress, but that is just me. Very rarely do I post anything that is MEANT to be disrespectful, and that is only in the no-holds-barred flame wars that will occasionally break out, and ususally it is when someone is jumping all over someone else without reason (usually a new member attacking another new member).

As for Jocey, I have already apologized for saying anything that he/SHE might have taken offense to, as well as pointing out that it was a comment to M_A_R_K, not Jocey.

Note, Jocey, unless that is short for something, isn’t that a girls name? Nice to know the gender of who you are refering to, so you don’t offend them by calling them “dude”, huh?

by sleepin’dawg ·

In reply to oh, yes it is!

the necessary sophistication and nuances to fully understand and appreciate the experience. It’s somewhat along the lines of difference between Champagne and beer and American beer at that. Ask jck since he seems to know just how poorly American beer is considered. Up here in Canada, we have water that is better than your beer and the Canadian beer we export to the US is a very pale imitation of the real stuff we consume here domesticly. Since living in Lansing you are reasonably close to the border so, the next time you visit Canada pick up a six pack of genuine Canadian beer and take it home to compare with the same brand that we export stateside. I would suggest Molson or Labatts as their export versions are the easiest to find in the US. Make sure you pick the same varieties like Labatt Blue or Molson Canadian. You don’t want to be comparing apples to oranges. :^O

I do understand the beer thing

by jdclyde ·

In reply to oh, yes it is!

last week, the only beer a friend had was “bud light” and I couldn’t believe how bad it was.

About the time when King Swill started his beer still there had been a big discussion so I tried that gen*** extra stout. Did not care for it. (they censored gen***? Didn’t know that was a swear word? 😀 )

I have gone from Mic Lite to Killians over the last few years, and now even a blue if I can’t get a killians. (still cracks me up that canadians have to name it a colo(u)r so the locals can remember it’s name! :^O )

But that is what happens when food comes into the US. It amazes me the people that don’t know the difference between Mexican food and Tex/Mex that we get here. (right MARK?) Just like authentic Crorian food, when you change the ingredients it changes the food. But because we only eat ugly animals, there isn’t MUCH dog in the food around here.

Just think four drumsticks on the rotweiler and the puppies are served like Cornish game hens. For the true afficiandos, there is always The Roadkill Cafe if you choose to eat out. They specialize in Puree of Poodle, German Sauteed Shepard, Rack of Lhasa and for desert those all time favourite of Squashed Squirrel and Chunk of Skunk. With that in mind, take your truck to get Bounced Boar and you shouldn’t have to go much further than your favorite topless joint for the dear hunt. Someone once defined hunting as the pursuit of the uneatable by the unspeakable. I think it was Oscar Wilde, a man renowned for his tiptoing through the tulips. Ol’ Oscar was a tad light in his loafers and you wouldn’t want to drop the soap if you were in a shower with him. Women seemed to like him though; so go figure.

Our Thanksgiving Day is the 2nd Monday in October and yes we have turkey.

by sleepin’dawg ·

In reply to Theres no turkey day up there, is there?

The main difference between the Canadian Thanksgiving and American Thanksgiving is that for Americans it seems to have a much greater significance as regards family than ours does. For us, the emphasis is more on Christmas in that regard. Lately, though, that has been changing, slowly but surely and Canadians are making Thanksgiving more of a family matter than it has been in the past. It’s probably because of our proximity to the US and all the overlap in attitudes what with so many Canadians, like myself, working in the US and picking up the advertising influences from American television. Regardless of what anyone says we are more alike then different. Have a happy Thanksgiving and I hope you’re going to get some time in with your boys. Cheers!!!

In reply to Our Thanksgiving Day is the 2nd Monday in October and yes we have turkey.

The Ex had picked the boys up just before 10 this morning, and man was this house quiet. Did some work and then went in and took a nap.

Then I hear a pounding on the door,
“I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.”

They had finished their “dinner” by 2 pm, and then the one Aunt that showed had to leave and the one Uncle that wasn’t in Jail had to get going too. With nothing to do, Thing One and Thing Two ASKED if they could come home! SWEEEEEET!

(happy dance, happy dance!)

They have also decided that because I am locally going wild boar hunting instead of up north for the weekend dear hunting, that they WANT to stay home instead of go with the EX for the weekend. I made it clear that they could do what they want, where they want as I would be coming and going for the next few daze. Going to stay with the EX was NOT an option they chose! (sucks to be her!)

Cheers it is my friend! Cheers it is! Life is good.

In lieu of the pig roast, how about a donkey roast.

Hey isn’t this supposed to be a technical site?!

In reply to Are you?

All I see is constant BS and flame wars that mere children would enjoy.

What happened to a site for professionals that want to discuss IT.

TR obviously doesn’t monitor this site very well, otherwise you would all lose your memberships here for creating so many off topic threads.

Nice to see that you’re loosening up and finally getting into the ol’ TR spirit of razzing and getting razzed. I was kind of worried about your emotional state for a while there. I thought you might tuck your tail ‘tween your legs and skulk off like a scared kitty just because you smoke cigars and took offense to one little joke about said cancer-causing toys. But you found your teflon skirt and are bouncing back in high fashion. You might fit in nicely here after all. 😀
