Hidden file in the "Temporary Internet Files" folder

By 54321answer ·

I continuously clean the temporary intenet files using the tools menu and Internet Options tab.

But when I right click on the "Temporary Internet Files" folder (in the c drive), it says that there are 2.42GB in there in 11 folders, which I can't even see. Do a test yourself and you might find the same thing. And YES I did unhide all folders in the view tab.

Any clue what to do?

Location of hidden Temporary Internet Files

This is for Windows XP
C\Documents and Settings\Your computer name\
Application Data\Local Settings\
Temporary Internet Files.

After you empty this folder by deleting the Temporary Internet Files from explorer, under "Tools" / Internet Options and so on, then you open up the C drive and check there, you would find that this folder is empty. No right click on the folder and choose "Properties" and see what it gives you.

I accidentally saved a document that had been downloaded into the TIF folder and I cannot find it again. I checked "unhide hidden folders" but it still is not showing up. I use XP and the browser was Explorer. Any suggestions as to how to find this document?

I had a similar problem. The only way to get to them was to log in as the local administrator, then unhide and delete the extra folders.

Hidden file in the "Temporary Internet Files" folder

by The Frank 123 In reply to Hidden file in the "Tempo ...

In Vista and Windows 7, the TIF sub-folders are hidden permanently from view. This can not be changed. There maybe as many as 125+ sub-folders and as much as 10's of thousands of files in those sub-folders. Using 'Tools' -> 'Internet options' -> 'Browsing history' -> 'Delete' browsing history will not delete any of those sub-folders or files. In fact, those files will grow and grow until they fill up your "C:\" drive. I had 116 sub-folders and 39,000+ files that took up 253 GB of space until I deleted them. Microsoft in it's infinite wisdom has provided a secure hidden place for any spyware/malware/rouge/virus to reside without fear of deletion. Good Luck!
