It’s all good. Yet even if he added himself to the sudoers list–
which can be done from sudo, btw–and ran the installer from
Terminal.app, there would still be a password prompt 🙁 That’s
because the Installer runs as “System Administrator”–an alias
for “root”–in the administrator group, hence the need to give a
password, even if one is already logged in from an account with
administrative privileges. The only way to avoid the prompt is to enable the “root” account
from “NetInfo” and log in from there [shudder], if you dare.Peace.

thanks lyon…
maybe i’ll get a hold of it one day…
‘man sudo’ (smack! fading palmprint on forehead…), from Computer Applications, Terminal, umm, Command prompt…or something like that. gotta get me one of those cheap mac’s that came out, as am motivated now for first time to learn linux….just as user unfriendly now as pc’s imho but so cool to have that insanely great os ported to linux. they were just so far ahead of their time….(apple)…windows is for weenies…

im not a big MAC fan, but get him to give you set your account as an administrator account, also when your starting your computer, hold down apple s and that will boot you in a single user mode and from there if you know some Linux / UNIX, you can create a new account for yourself. I would look it up before hand then try that. again, i hardly every use macs, so i dont even know how know this much. Have fun!

Warning: the answer will not help you to do what you want.
Basically, you can’t. And there is a reason, implied in your question – your dad does not want you to. The rest of the answer assumes that we’re talking about Mac OS X.
You can try single-user mode (Apple+S on boot), but the better way is to talk to your dad and ask him to allow you to administer the computer (change user type in the System Preferences -> Accounts), so you stop bother him (always, try to find *his* problem, solved by your request 🙂 -

After all those comments I can only add that you can change the
administrator pwd if you have the instalation CDs-DVDs with
you. Startup holding C key and once in the instaler you quit the
app and find in the upper menu: “Reset Administrator
Password”.
Hoping you do right things with all the info provided here…
(BTW: the dad example kinda like it and illustrates very well)-

I know this thread is a bit old but thanks for the good info on bypassing the admin account, holding down the C key while starting up worked great. I bought a G4 Mac at the TRW swap meet. It wouldn’t let me do any reconfiguration because I didn’t know an admin password! Holding down “apple s” while starting up did not work to get the machine into single user mode however. It just sat there.

You will still need to have the password regardless. sudo will still require the password. Your dad can adjust your account to be an administrator. If he is not sure about giving you full access then you will have to wait.
