How do i add a Secondary DNS to my network with Windows 2003?

Does the server need Active Directory running on it to be a DNS server?
Or do i need to add the 2nd server to the current domain and then just have it be a backup?

What you can do is add another DC and use the DNS service on that. So you have a backup server of ur AD. If One DC goes down you have anohter and your whole network doesnt go down

or do you want to know if you need AD running to be a DNS server?
