How do I fix: rundll32.exe has performed

    Locked

    by andrew.s.casella ·

When trying to use my modem on my Micron Millenium P150, I get the error message rundll32.exe has performed an illegal operation…
I have tried deleting the file, running scan disk, defrag, and reloading Windows 95. No success. I am trying to avoid doing a complete format and then having to reload everyting. Clicking details yields the following: RUNDLL32 caused an invalid page fault in module KRNL386.EXE at 0002:0000564c.
I hope this is enough info to get help. Thanks in advance.

First don’t delete Run32dll.exe. You need it to run Windows. Try this go to your Control Panel/System/Device Manager/Modem and delete your modem. Reboot and Windows should detect it. Choose to install your drivers manually. I.E. pick the “have disk”option. Once installed if not prompted to, reboot. After boot starts enter CMOS and diable Serial Port 2 (COM2). Then exit w/save. If this doesn’t fix the problem then a critical file is corrupted and you need to install Windows again. Don’t wipe your hard drive just go to setup and reinstall. Windows will replace the bad or missing files from your system.

There is a kernel.exe update that is good for Win95. It might be just what thew doctor ordered.

Don’t delete rundll32.exe; this is a system file needed by Windows. This is most likely coming from a corrupt .dll. The first thing to do would be to reinstall the communications components of Windows. See Microsoft Knowledge Base Article ID: Q181599.

Its sounds as though a modem file has been corrupted. Go to your device manager and remove the modem. Reboot and reinstall the drivers when asked to. Now try using the modem. Everything should be fine.

Reload Windows from your hard drive. First copy the win95 folder from the CD to your hard drive. Then go into the win95 directory on your hard drive and create a file called msbatch.inf by typing “edit msbatch.inf” when you press return you will get the blue edit screen then you type these words exactly llike this
      [Setup]
      Producttype=1
after the 1 press return, then chose file and exit and save the file, then restart the machine in the dos mode and run setup from the win95 directory. This will allow you to keep all of your current windows settings and programs, but will replace all Windows working files. It will keep you from having to reload programs and drivers that is associated with new win95 loads. I have corrected this problem with this method several times. Good Luck. Joe

The problem does not lie with the RunDll32.exe, but within the process it is trying to run. A .DLL that is being called is corruppt or missing. agreeing with the others start by re-installing the modem, if that does not fix the problem, re-nstall Dial-up Networking. That will fix the problem

Another thing to try reinstalling is the network settings. I assume you are trying to connect to the internet when this happens? I have seen some strange problems with the network settings getting corrupted. When in safe mode double check all settingsand click on ok it should reinstall all proper files. It is the “wonder Fix” around here when things get wacky on our pc’s connected to the LAN/WAN.

#6 comes closest. It would help to know which version of win95 (_, A, B, C), and which modem, and what happened befroe the problem started. Kernl386.exe handles 16-bit code (System.ini file, check .386 lines) and (per Q137335)the number indicates a “debug kernel” error at 20kb >> a Dos program (win30 driver?). (Some Winmodems use Win3 code).
Rundll32.exe executes code in DLL files which are not executable. You didn’t specify what you use the modem for, if the error occurs in fax or hyperterminal or modems control panel applet then the problem may be modem drivers (I assume like most consumer systems that this is a WinModem). Web accellerators and “security software” like Guard Dog may also be called. Have you tried doing an “end task” (control-alt-delete)on everything except Explorer?

BTW: Installing the “kernel update” on Win95B/C (common suggestion by ISPs) installs older invalid files and means you will have to install windows to a new directory (MS KB article Q178400).

The 0002 hex address tells us that the problem is happening in an area of memory usually used by hardware devices. That means that it’s doubtful that the real problem is rundll32 or the krnl386. And since you’ve already isolated it to times when you’re using your modem, we have a most likely candidate.

I would remove the modem from the Device Manager, and allow Windows to redetect and reinstall it on the next reboot. If it’s a modem that’s not listed, make sure you have the correct files from the manufacturer.

Test the modem using Hyperterminal, or some other terminal program that doesn’t use Dial-up Networking. If that works, then try a Dial-up Networking connection. If you then get the error, uninstall/reinstall DUN.

If the problem continues, or if it still occured when using a terminal program, replace the modem with a known good modem. If you have an old one lying around, that’s good enough for testing and/or try a different slot on the motherboard. If that corrects the problem, replace the m

We’ve had this exact problem … and it was caused by our Virus Software… It was Either MCaffee or Innoculan. Whichever it was, had a known fix on their website. Check your virus software – and do a search there!
