How far away are we from building actual light sabers?

I know they just added lasers to navel ships. So how far away do you guys figure we are from making real light sabers (even if they would be kind of useless)?

Just based on how fast we have advanced in that last 200 years.

We have advanced more in the last 200 years than we did from 1800 to 4000 BC combined.

Your plasma torch idea, plus a star trek like force field surrounding it that would let matter pass, but not energy. Thus two swords could collide, but they would cut through almost anything.

A very long time.

Capturing a Plasma Field within a Magnetic Field to use as a weapon is possible but the hard part here is the Battery Technology.

Currently there is nothing even envisaged that is capable of storing the High Drain/Power Requirements for something like this. Even a smallish Nuclear Reactor would fail to meet the need of the Power Requirements let alone to be handheld.
