In 1969 I attended class for Navy Cryptographic
School, that's about the very beginning, the
encoding, transmitting, receiving and decoding
vital information. It has come a long ways from
60 baud to terabytes. Titles range from radioman,
electronics technician, instrument tech, test
director, data communications tech, and the all inclusive computer service representative.

I started in 1979, learning FORTRAN, BASIC, and COBOL. Um, ick. Became an XNS systems administrator, and worked primarily with Xerox servers until about 1985, when we started moving to MS-Net and PCs (I was so excited when I got my first 386!). First started working with Exchange servers in...ugh, how long HAS it been?...about 1994, I think.

I spent 20 years working for Large Un-Named Aircraft Manufacturer in Seattle. Working in that large a corporate environment has some advantages, chief among them that you get to work with a little bit of everything, and on a REALLY large scale.

I've had many different titles

Help Desk (no title, it was the beginning of PC technical jobs)
Desktop Support Technician
Senior Tech Support Analyst
Project Manager (at the time it was CCMail)
IT Manager

I've had a great career in IT and have worked myself up through the ranks. I think if you do many different jobs in IT you really acquire a depth of knowledge that isn't gained any other way.

30 years before IT career came to an abrupt end

by bg6638 In reply to How long have you worked ...

I've worked in IT for 30 years holding the following titles:

sorter operator
data entry operator
data entry supervisor
computer operator/jr. programmer
assembler/cobol programmer
dbase/foxpro programmer
system administrator (IBM S/36 & AS400 & Windows)
IT/MIS mgr
pc support (self-employed start-up business)

After 30 years with only an AAB degree and a couple of minor MS certs = unemployed due to corporate bankruptcy. Lately, prospective employers view my past experience as "worthless", since my resume doesn't have B.S. in CS/MIS along with an endless stream of acronyms after my name........trying to set-up home business, but income is next to nothing due to home users who want to pay next to nothing and small businesses that are doing without.
