How much work do you do for free ?

By rtobin.itsupport ·
Hi Guys,

Just throwing this out there to see what is everyone else's opinion.

How much work do you do for free ?

Whether its helping a friend setup a pc or calling out to one of your users homes to help them with their home pc,etc

Personally I would do a lot a work for free, generally I dont charge home users unless its something serious that will involve me buying replacement parts, etc

Just curious...

I already did that

by jck In reply to It's very easy to fall in ...

I moved 1270 miles from where I grew up.

14 months later, my parents lived within 3 miles of me again.

Next time, I move and don't give them my address. :^0

LOL!

Maybe that's the trick.....just don't tell anyone where you moved!

Funny thing is...

by jck In reply to LOL!

I'm moving within a year or two, whether or not my house is sold.

I'm tired of where I live.

Anyone who is looking for a 2 bed, 2 bath house on about 1/3 acre outside of the Tampa metro, and within walking distance of just about anything food, medical, shopping, etc.,(including the county-run transit bus stop)...I have a house for sale.

Decided on a destination?

I remember you were considering western Carolina at one time.

sort of

I'm either coming to the Carolinas, or moving back toward where I grew up.

I am looking at a job in the Charlotte area right now. I am a perfect fit.

I just hope they don't think they consider me "over-qualified" because of my years of experience, and I hope they'll consider me even though I'm from out-of-state.

Not too much

I do find that I do a lot of work for the classes that I teach but then again it does require a lot of leg work. As far as friends and family, not too much. I do a little for my dad but he has a Mac and I haven't done much with Macs.

Not all users are created equal

by jdclyde In reply to How much work do you do f ...

Like in many things IT, the answer is "it depends".

Direct family, it is free.

Close Friends, it is free.

Beyond that, it depends on who they are and what needs to be done.

People that remember me when I need something are remembered when they need something. If it is a one way road, it quickly turns into a dead-end for them.

You have to be careful

I am a nice guy and some people will take advantage of that. It's all about balancing being a nice guy and being smart.

I remember those that remember me

If it becomes a one way road, it quickly leads to a dead end, for them.

I will continue to help people for free that I feel are worthy of my assistance.

I also GIVE free computers to people that are in positions of need, so I do give of more than just my time. Have to stand together, right?

Work?? For Free??

by mjd420nova In reply to How much work do you do f ...

I service a lot of units for elderly people on fixed incomes and social security for just what they can afford and often for free if the parts were expensive. I cannot afford to buy the parts for everyone but often I have spare parts in my own pile of parts I collect from users who would otherwise toss them in the trash. Family and friends get work for free but have to buy the parts new, I need my spares for those who can't afford them. I will accept a dinner, treats, drinks or just a kiss for services rendered. I do a lot of barter work for carpenters, plumbers and landscapers, this helps me keep my own expenses down and afford providing the free stuff for others.
