How to provide links to articles and webpages?
Lockedby onbliss · about 18 years, 2 months ago
Say, I read a good article in a website and I want to share it in a message board or public forums, I do some of the following:
Option 1
1) I Provide a link
2) Then, I provide the website name. For example, I say : “Source: http://www.techrepublic.com”
3) If there is an author, I mention the name.Option 2
1) I do all of the items in Option 1.
2) Copy and paste the entire article or provide an excerpt.Am I sharing information in the best possible manner? What are your opinions and suggestions?
And, what is your suggestion for sharing (providing links) to images?
thanks

Copy and Paste
by old guy · about 18 years, 2 months ago
In reply to How to provide links to articles and webpages?
I just copy and paste the whole info in the address line from the page that I would want them to start on. Something like:
http://techrepublic.com.com/5218-6230-0.html?forumID=8&threadID=187185&messageID=1917482Is that what you are talking about? Of course, if there is a specific author you would probably want to add his name prior to the link.
If it doesn’t provide a hyperlink they can just click on then they can copy and paste your info in to the address bar of the Internet.

An abstract
by dc guy · about 18 years, 2 months ago
In reply to How to provide links to articles and webpages?
Remember all those book reports they made you write in school? The purpose was to teach you how to write an abstract.
If you give us a link and 20 people follow it, you’ve just asked 20 people to read the entire article. That’s not very kind and it’s a huge waste of time. Very few people will find it as interesting as you did. They would prefer to see the highlights and then decide whether they want to bother reading the whole thing.
If instead you take the fifteen minutes to write an abstract, 200 people might read it. Most of them will get just as much out of it as they would get out of the original, and the few others will go read the original. Everyone’s time will be used more efficiently.
I have never followed a link from a BBS. I suppose I might have missed a couple of things I would have enjoyed reading, but I was not about to look at all of them in order to find the ones I might like.
There are not enough hours in the day to follow URLs.
Sorry.
Posting the entire article doesn’t help, either. It’s still too long.
A bulletin board is for bulletins, not articles.

I agree in principle, but

In reply to An abstract
I don’t think it is necessary to write a full abstract. A sentence or two describing what is to be found at the link (a teaser, if you will) is enough. If my intro piques their interest, they can follow the link and read or scan the original. There isn’t enough time in the day to write a formal abstract for everything you’d like to share. And just because you follow the link doesn’t mean you have to read the whole article. Did you ever read “How to Read a Book”, by Mortimer J. Adler? Scan for the good stuff, and only read it all if it’s all important.

About Copying and Pasting
by noyoki · about 18 years, 2 months ago
In reply to How to provide links to articles and webpages?
Also, if people are counting who is reading which articles, pasting the entire article, as well as turning off some readers, screws this up as noone goes to the link. Why would they? They’ve just read what they came to see.
The other caveat to posting the whole thing, is that those who are making money by “showing ads” to the people passing through their site and/or reading their articles, are missing opportunities to “show” a person an ad, and therefore missing a chance to make a few cents, possibly to cover bandwidth costs, etc. Depends, some places pay per view, some pay only when the ad is clicked on. But if no one sees it, neither happen. (I’m not saying this is right, wrong, annoying, whatever, just that it is what it is.)
I think, depending on where you/the creator live, you can also get into trouble for posting the whole thing, even WITH citing the name.
The best bet is to take a piece of the article, either the piece you found most interesting or most relevant to what you are writing about, quote that in your summary/explination and then link to the rest.
As far as pictures, to link to a pic, just right click it and select “copy link location”. This will give you a link that you can paste that will point directly to the picture. But as stated above with text, there are people that have issues with this.
Fair warning, it is best to skim the site, some people don’t want you to link directly to them, as they may not have the bandwidth to support it. Unless this is stated however, I’d tend to go with the approach above.

This is the water-cooler (US), saloon bar (UK) – you are amongst friends. Metaphoric beer in hand, chewing over the woes of the world. At least that’s how it should be.
The [Edit] is so useful for correcting typos and just plain idiot word-order and you can use it without accepting censure from the unelected post-police.
I do believe, however, that you have to give up the right to completely change the point of any post and maroon a reply high and dry but you are still allowed to edit any post that makes you look more of an idiot than you would like to be.

I do option 1, but I will also copy and paste a few main points from the article.
This gets the idea across for people without a lot of time to be reading screen after screen your copy and paste, yet it proviceds the ability for people that DO have the time to get more out of the article if they chose, or to verify that nothing was “taken out of context”.
Just remember the http:// so it will show up as a like they can just click on. Make it easy for the reader.

a bit on the sarcastic side. 😛 (Re: legal for what) Hey, looking completely innocent is hard work!
The only problem to attending concerts is that I am in NY, and you’re in MI 😛
And Manson’s Sweet Dreams is among my all time top favorite songs… Lol
Though I’ll admit to being a concert virgin… None of my friends really like the same kinds of music I do… Okay, they absolutely hate it, but I forgive them.
Only concert I’ve ever been to was Ani Defranco. While I DO like her music (mostly her older stuff), I wish I could have gone to see MSI, Mudvane… Before I get too old to see them! Lol. But going by yourself doesn’t sound much fun.
And I suppose you exactly how those chains feel, hmm? Sized just for you?
Btw, if you’re trying to scare me off, yer not doin’ a very good job. :p

Concerts. I take my 13 year old twins to between 5 and 10 concerts every year. They LOVED Mudvayne! (state theater in Detroit)
I also like to clear the pits at Ozfest every year.
NY huh? I was suppose to take a trip there last summer to see my Aunt, but spent all my money on a divorce instead of a vacation. A good investment!

…who shared your thoughts.
Looks like my Option#2, with an excerpt/abstract (a really short one) is the best way to go?
I read somewhere that one ought to provide a link to the homepage of the website that carries the article, and not the link to the article directly.
Would I be infringing on any copyrights of any sort if I have the ability to copy+paste the entire article, plus give due credits to the author+source and provide the links?
Thanks

In reply to Thanks to all of you….
Copyright infringement is a maybe. However what you will be doing is taking away page-hits. Say 100 people see *their* article on *your* site. That is 100 people that don’t bother to click onto their site. That means 100 hits that their counter doesn’t display (possibly meaning that management thinks the project is a bust and pulls funding) or 100 people that don’t view the advertisements (such as Google AdSense), costing the company/person revenue. If 100 less people “see” the paid advertisements, advertisers start looking elsewhere and take their money with them.
They can’t call you on plagerism precisely (because it’s basic definition (as far as I know) is stealing someobe else’s work and taking credit for it) unless they say specifically that you can’t repost (because they then just told you you’re not allowed to do it), but they can call you on the above.
Besides, that’s just rude. They work hard to put content on their site to keep their viewers happy and on *their*, not just so some kid can steal it and post every other article on his/her own site every week or even once.
If you are posting a small bit about the article, or quote a few lines, that drives people to their site. This is fine. Posting the whole thing in its entirety defeats the purpose of the original site.
Unless the author gives express permission to repost the entire thing on another site, you may as well rob a store of 25/100 items and sell them on your own site, while saying you got them from Target.

by onbliss · about 18 years, 1 month ago
In reply to As I stated before
Another aspect is that some folks do not ALWAYS like to click the links and go to different websites. In the forums, yahoo/msn groups etc. that I participate I have seen people expressing inclination to directly read the stuff.
My guess is that when a person moves to an external website to read an article, it is highly probable that something else might catch the eye and they kind of wander around the Net. Probably they want to remain focused on the subject matter.
Just a guess 😛

In reply to I do see your point
Of course people want to read it right then and there. People want everything and they want it now. However, by saying the general masses want a new car and they want it now, does that mean you can steal a few cars to sell on your own site, without having to pay for manufacturing, labor, paint, electronics, etc?
I think people will stand to click on one single link that takes them to the desired article if they want to read it. One link will not have them “wandering the net”. Especially if they have Firefox and open them in a new tab, they can then close this tab and resume their browsing and if they want to come back to your site without using the tab feature, it is only a back-button away.
Seriously, pretend you were working for the NY Times newspaper (one of the biggest in NY). You spent time, effort, and money into composing a piece every week and sponsers were paying you to show their ads on the site with your writing. Then someone else went and copied the entire thing to their own site, bypassing the advertisers ads, and your counters. Now, you are no longer sure how many people were reading the article and you aren’t getting paid by the advertisers, who eventually walk away.
How would you feel?

If I am in business…

In reply to Of course
….I would always be sorry to lose business.
A person has to search only little hard to find the “Times Select” articles on other websites. How does NY Times even allow this to happen. I have seen Thomas Friedman’s articles elsewhere.
Firefox or not, Internet is too newsy/juicy and it is easy to really wander :-), unless someone is really focused.
An important distinction that I want to bring out is that not all websites operate on a fully scale commercial basis. There are several univeristy sites, think-tank websites etcetra who are not always on the look out for making money out of their essays, documents or articles. I would like to thank those websites and authors by providing credits.
I have also seen people in their zeal to share information, copy+paste content that are accessible only via a subscription basis on post them on email-lists/groups.

that you think it is acceptable, just because it “is done elsewhere”.
People also kill others, so I guess that’s alright too.
> “Firefox or not, Internet is too newsy/juicy and it is easy to really wander :), unless someone is really focused.”
How hard is it to remember to click the middle button to open a new tab? Then shut it when you are finished? I’m sorry, but if a person is THAT lazy, do you really feel good about yourself by stealing content for your own site JUST to accomodate THAT?
Do what you will, I’m not going to be able to stop you, obviously. I will tell you that you get no sympathy from me when you get shut down and fined when you copy someone’s work after the fine-print says you aren’t allowed to.
You also might find that being creative is also fun. Not just stealing from others.
I think I’ve made my point, so I’ll stop here. This has turned into an argument, not just asking for information. You are either going to do it or you aren’t. End of story.

In reply to I’m glad to see,
…and I acknowledged it.
I am just trying to present a picture of what is happening out there. That does not mean, that I am going to follow suit.
Once information has been gathered or during the process of gathering, is it unreasonable for people to discuss things? That is what I thought we were doing.
Just the other day, someone offered me to loan a DVD for me to watch. Isn’t that someone actually cutting into the profits of the movie makers? Such things are common occurances.
I have referred to in my posts: email lists, forums, yahoo/msn groups etcetra. I have never said anything about website or placing contents there. You did jump to conclusions :p
And also, you are trying to portray a wrong picture of me – that being I am out to steal somebody’s work. I see I must have touched some raw nerve for you to jump upon me this way. So I too feel this is the end of the story. Thanks for your thoughts.

Um… So forums, groups, and lists are less than a website. Now, mind you, 2 of those 3 actually get POSTED to a website (and the 3rd sometimes does as well).
So the fact that you are posting it to a site not owned by you is irrelevant.
This is no longer a “discussion”, but rather, turned into a
“but _____”
“and you’re still stealing someone else’s work”
“but others do it”
“would you like it if it was done to you?”
“but its not on a website”
“its still posted on the web”Do you see what I’m talking about? I don’t have time for a debate.
I responded to a question for information.
Not for a request to debate said information. If someone else has something else to add/subtract, this is fine. But I don’t really appreciate being forced to defend myself.
