How to reinstall windows without formatt

By joanna ·
Hello, I'm a Win95 user. I have problems with explorer.exe recently and it keeps crashing the system. After attempts to reinstall IE5 failed, I attempted to reinstall windows over itself (clicking "no" for overwritting newer system files), only to find out that Windows will not boot anymore! The error message says that there are faults in system.ini, and 10 .vxd files in the directory "c:\windows\system\vmm32\" are not present or are of invalid version. It then goes on to say that because of this, configuration manager cannot run and windows cannot start.

As I know I messed up with the windows system file, I now consider deleting the whole thing and reinstalling it, preferably trying Win98. The only problem is, I want to know if it is possible to install Windows without having the format the hard disk, as I have important files on it and I do not have a way to back up the data (apart from using millions of floppys!). I don't mind reinstalling the program files, so is it possible just to delete "c:\wind

Hi Joanna,

Yes, it is possible to reinstall Windows 95 without reformarting of your harddrive.

You may delete the Windows directory or rename it to something else, and then reinstall your Windows 95.

I suggest that you install Windows 98, since it has a utility named "System File Checker" which used to check the Windows system file.

you can install win98 on a 95 system that is messed up, the only pain is, when you get done, you will still have to reinstall the programs that you had, in 98 setup it gives you the choice if you want to format or not.

Just get a Upgrade version of Windows 98 second edition, put the cd-rom in the drive & upgrade it ... Win 98 install will remove & install the needed files & correct the wrong version files ... select "yes" to overwrite the system files with newer one if it asks you that ... then you will have IE 5 (on Win98se CD) and the latest features of the fixes that were done to Win 95 and your hard drive data will be intact ...

Good Luck! You can do it!

Yes, you can delete c:\windows or rename it if you have room and delete it after reinstalling. This will not affect your other files.
