Re: VPN

If you visit a site via VPN, nobody but the owner of the VPN company knows where you are, what sites you visit and - if not via https - what you do there.

If you visit a site directly (not via VPN) your ISP knows where you are, what sites you visit and - if not via https - what you do there and the sites you visit know where you are.

In both cases, of course, the sites you visit know what you do there, but if you use VPN to visit them you are anonymous, except for their cookies.

Can you refine your question?

While there is a short version which is "It's as if your PC was plugged into their network" that may not be enough for some.

Please tell what the need is so everyone can comment if a VPN will do what you want it to do.

That said, your location is known to the VPN service as well as your initial ISP connection. If your VPN leaks via the DNS, then that's a well discussed shortcoming. The DNS LEAK issue varies with the VPN service so again you must add detail to your posts and questions.

How Virtual Private Network Works

by benmartin9920 In reply to How Virtual Private Netwo ...

A virtual private network (VPN) is a series of virtual connections routed over the internet which encrypts your data as it travels back and forth between your client machine and the internet resources you're using, such as web servers. Many internet protocols have built-in encryption, such as HTTPS, SSH, NNTPS, and LDAPS.
A VPN works by routing your device’s internet connection through your chosen VPN’s private server rather than your internet service provider (ISP) so that when your data is transmitted to the internet, it comes from the VPN rather than your computer. The VPN acts as an intermediary of sorts as you connect to the internet, thereby hiding your IP address – the string of numbers your ISP assigns your device – and protecting your identity. Furthermore, if your data is somehow intercepted, it will be unreadable until it reaches its final destination.
A VPN creates a private “tunnel” from your device to the internet and hides your vital data through something that is known as encryption.

I hope this helps!

A virtual personal community (VPN) is a collection of digital connections routed over the web which encrypts your records as it travels lower back and forth between your patron desktop and the web assets you are using, such as internet servers.
