HP will not accept USB peripherals

    Locked

    by randerson7 ·

I can’t connect a ne wprinter to the two year old HP pc. It recognizes the printer and attempts to install, but hesitates and then says that the device is not recognizable USB device. The machine is recovered from a virus attack and utilized the HP on-board recovery drive (D:). It is working well otherwise.

You may have to follow the mfg. instructions exactly to install it. Usually you must install the software first, then connect the printer via USB. Try installing directly to a USB port off the PC’s motherboard. (*Rear of the computer) Some USB printers do not like USB hubs, or you may have a cable extension that is too long for USB to support. (16ft. is the usual max.)
      Check ContolPanel/System/

Check ContolPanel/System/Hardware/DeviceMgr. Go all the way to the bottom and check for what USB controllers you have installed.

I have had the same printer basically. And after reading support at http://www.hp.com/support I think the problem may be with a IEEE1284.4 or Dot 4. Mine is a brand new HP PSC 1350 printer on a home built system which is fully updated. I purchased a 5-Port PCI card and will install it hoping that is the problem. Hopefully the driver disk it came with will have the IEEE1284.4 or Dot 4 on it. I’ll keep you posted.

sometimes this will resolve a USB issue:
Check your device manager to see if the OS USB root hub is installed. Then see if the installation disk with the priinter has a USB folder or a driver folder with a USB device driver within it, occassionaly devices require thier own USB device driver to function withiin an OS.
Hope this helps, good luck … H

OK. I purchased a new USB cable w/gold tips (better connectivity) and a USB card and installed (followed instructions w/card…must install software before connecting card to mb). Installation now reads the USB but now having problems with the installation of HP PSC 1350 into WinXP. After over 3 hrs on phone with HP techs/specialist, their diagnosis is (drum roll please)…REINSTALL XP! The problem isn’t with the printer hardware/software but with XP, or so they say. Now to spend another day on it instead of preparing for Hurricane Jeanne.
