HTTPS only?

By ross.a.sims ·
I have a Windows XP SP3 computer that I have recently wiped clean and restored. I've performed all of the updates and surfed online with it with no errors. Recently though, I can only access secure (https) sites. Whenever I try to access a regular (http) site, I get a standard 404 error. Thanks for any help.

Thanks a lot reedbr. I have had this problem for a couple of days after my laptop got several viruses like alureon.co. after I ran several anti virus and anti malware, i had same problem: couldnt access http sites.

I was about to reinstall windows after doing several routin steps posted for this problem, but then i found this message and was surprized how easily could solve the problem.

thanks again

Most probably,

some virus (or rather local adware) installs itself as a proxy, so that it can inject additional content into your browsing.

When the malware is killed, the "proxy" process disappears, but the proxy settings still divert outgoing http requests to a local port.

Typically, there's no point in breakning into encrypted communication, therefore https isn't touched.
