I can't shut down my computer!

By johnjds ·
HP Pavilion with Win ME. Everything great for 1st two weeks after upgrading to ME but now computer will not shut down. I go through the shut down process and computer re -boots. I also tried switching it off but again it re-boots. I am assuming itis a windows problem but I guess it could also be a hardware problem. I can see the ok to turn off your computer message flash on the screen just before it reboots, but nothing I have tried will allow me to shut down.

I can't shut down my computer!

John,

Note that norton antivirus and/or systemworks have been known to cause these problems in Win 98 and SE. Also, any utility program that was not configured for ME can cause errors due to a change in the OS.

I have Norton Antivirus, but this would not explain why my system worked and shut down properly for two weeks after installing ME. Everything looks and works ok now, it just won't shut down.
Thanks

I think everyone else has covered the standard checklist for these types of problems. I don't know what model of pavillion you have, but if you check HP's website, you'll see that they do not support any OS besides Windows 98 on the Pavillion line. I found that there's a good reason for this - HP has "proprietized" the bios in most of the pavilions, and it doens't behave correctly with any OS besided Win 98.

I have a Pavilion 8662C here in my office, and I ran Windows 2000 Pro on it successfully for about a week (but did not reboot), then all **** broke loose. After hassling with it for a day or so, I found some interesting information on the hardware, and threw in the towel.

I know this doesn't help you solve your problem, but I'd just like you wish you luck. Pavillions are generally best used as paperweights.

Thanks for the input but isn't Windows ME just an upgrade to Win 98? Also, I am not having any problems with the operation of my computer, it works fine but simply won't shut down and stay down. It goes through the normal shutdown process and then reboots as if it is stuck in the restart mode. My pavilion is an 8176 and is the second one I have owned and have been very satisfied with it's operation up to this point. I just can't believe the problem is a compatibility one, and feel that it is some minor problem with an incorrect setting or damaged file. At least I still have hope that this is all it is.
Thanks Again
John

I can't shut down my computer!

I am on my 3rd (8776C) pavilion since July (store keeps replacing to try to eliminate problems) and with all models I have had many of the same problems - won't shut down, locks up, mouse stops responding, CD-DVD stops responding while recording, doesn't recognize CD or A drives, runs hot, etc., etc. Still fighting with HP and is anyone surprised not having much luck.

The last tech to work on it discovered the Power Supply did not match the specs for the computer. The model number is correct, but it's not powerful enough to run the unit and doesn't meet the specifications required. Yikes!

Power supplies for the Pavilion are in high demand. I waited over 3 months and none ever were available. Am still waiting now for one.

Any of you know anything about this?

HP knows thre's a problem and can't decide what to do!
