But should I act surprised? 🙁

What happens when you can’t post an answer? No text entry field? Post doesn’t show up?

I did have a weird one where I ended up double-posting because my first post did not show up. Not in Q&A, though.

Not gotten better yet?

Once, way back, flushing the browser cache and making sure the TR cookies were killed (I normally let some cookies persist) helped. And IE in particular, for whatever reason, seems to have problems with TR for some people.

I wish you less irksome site behavior for the future.

Hope the little girl is feeling better. I also wish you success in getting Q&A to behave properly.

Thankfully, you can attend the girl directly, and not through a quirky web interface.

SM 1.1.19? I sure had some weird issues for a while. But I’m a traitor and use SM2.x on Windows most of the time.

edit: I’m not seeing the same problem with SM 1.x as you are, but I’m still using teh Windows.

The only time I really had any DIV issues was when I was using Chip Camden’s GM script with FF (which is really nice for the forum). It was unique to my one system for whatever reason, but all I had to do was tweak the script a bit.

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’m not happy. Once again, I am unable to post a response to a question in the Q&A section. To TPTB to you suppose you could manage to fix it right? Or can I recommend a good programmer to lend you a hand?

Geeze Louise.

by seanferd ·

In reply to And here we go again

Wherefore do they cause you so much trouble? Is there some sort of Kentucky v. Nova Scotia feud?

Now, the two sites I visit most are in process of mucking about. I think a metric and data collection system needs to be designed to quantify the amount of site traffic classified as “why is the site broken?”. (Which, especially at this other site, must be accurately differentiated from “why is the network between the site and user borking the traffic and making the site look broken to some users?”.)

• #2891827

Probably both have the same answer

by jck ·

In reply to Geeze Louise.

Poorly executed planning. Good testing would have shown both. But, QA is often borked cause of “cost”.

Same reason sometimes stupid little bugs are in my software. Someone has to have a piece of software yesterday, so I do something stupid like forgetting to do a .Update call.

Ah well. Hope it all gets working…for everyone.

It’s just becoming increasingly frustrating

by purpleskys ·

In reply to Probably both have the same answer

Today I can only view “some” replies to question and discussions. If it weren’t for the fact that I use two different computers (a decent little dell with xp pro on it – my work machine, and my asus 2.3 quad core with win 7 – my home machine), i would have blamed it on either the machine or my browser, but that just isn’t the case. I almost feel like I’m being picked on because I’m a Nova Scotian 🙁 .

Oh well…I just hope they iron this out soon. I gave up the other tech forum that I used to frequent a couple years ago. I’m about outta places to hang my hat.

Nova Scotian

by santeewelding ·

In reply to It’s just becoming increasingly frustrating

Once upon a long time ago, the business next-door to mine was owned and operated by a Nova Scotian. He was a sign painter. He hand-painted signs for other businesses. He did all my signage, including, “…Will return suddenly”, which I hang to this day on my front door when I step out.

I’ll never forget him. He was a master in the old school of typography, like Old Mycroft. To this day I hand-write my “M’s” and my “W’s” his way and no other.

“Where everybody learned how to do it the wrong way,” he told me, “I’ll never know.”

(The middle part goes all the way up, or down, without truncation)

• #2844352

It’s annoying, that’s for damn certain.

Minus votes are for marking the target, taking aim only to find a buddy’s spine in the sights is stressful.

I try to fix it when I can, but there’s only so much I can do.

The negative does otherwise serve one purpose. It tells how many live under a rock.

by jamesrl ·

In reply to That wouldn’t be you

If you think about it, you can probably figure out which post I gave a minus. I don’t think its appropriate to use even minor vulgarities to slag other members here, if you want to do that take it to email. Of course thats my personal opinion, others may think differently. And that is an entirely reasonable use of the voting button, in my opinion.

But going around giving every post you make a minus vote, I simply don’t care that much or have that much free time. I might suggest someone who does is pretty petty.

I can’t send you a PM, i think you’ll have to “follow” me first. Basically, nothing happens, i type a response, hit submit, and nothing happens…it doesn’t post, there’s no error…just nothing…i’ve even refreshed and tried again…stilll…nothin’… 🙁 makes me a little sad….

• #2844399

Contacts PM is probably still bugged…

by ansugisalas ·

In reply to Hi Tammy

It doesn’t matter if both follow each other, only a subset of contacts will be available for PM… and it’s not a two-way thing either: When I checked it, I couldn’t PM palmetto, but he could PM me.

Yup, just checked and it’s still all bugged up. I have only 8 people available for PM, and I know some of those people can PM me.

You know, it bugs me a bit that the google docs bug sheet was abandoned unreplaced; we had about twenty big bona fide bugs on there, and only about half of them have been fixed.
An updated checklist would be nice, let us know that TR still remember the stuff we took a lot of trouble to report.

browsers are both IE 9, one is one xp pro and the other is win7 pro…I haven’t tried to respond in clarify, i’ll try to remember to do that next time….I really don’t know if it’s certain ones or newer ones, I would stab a guess at newer ones as I don’t normally post a response to an older question.

I’ve had the same problem with FF, but with a twist.

I select Reply, get the title and text boxes, do my thing, then click Submit Reply. Focus changes to the button, but nothing apparently happens. However, if I do a page reload (not just a refresh), the post is there. This is, I think, how I got the last several double-posts I’ve made; I click, nothing happens, I click again, and this time the page refreshes.

This happens to me on any one of four different computers. All are running XP and using FF 3.6.17 with the same add-ons.

😉 So basically Nick.. the post “posted” – it just doesn’t appear until later/after refresh?

Is it every single time? only some times? in both discussions/QA? Replies to posts? Starting a new discussion/QA? Have you tried another OS? Java script enabled?

-Tammy [_]3

Yep, that’s about it

by nicknielsen ·

In reply to Oh sure.. be the oddball…

It’s like the local script didn’t get the word back from the server to update the page.

It only happens sometimes, primarily in replies to posts in both Discussions and Q&A. A higher percentage in Q&A, but I think that’s more related to me not posting there very often, so they stand out more. I don’t remember it happening if I start a discussion. It doesn’t appear to be related to which browser tab the page is in, nor does it appear to be related to how many tabs are open.

I tend to open a group of tabs, then go through them one by one, and notice it happens later in my browsing session, so it could be related to aging, although it doesn’t seem to happen any more often in the very active threads than in others.

Javascript is enabled, but I’m running NoScript and AdBlock Plus. All five required sites are allowed: Techrepublic.com, com.com, ZDNet.com, Bnet.com, and cbsinteractive.com.

edit: and it happened with this post, on a freshly-loaded page. Oh, well…

PurpleSkys are you sure it is not your Firewall and Antivirus…….

by peconet tietokoneet ·

In reply to I just want to be able to help folks

Your Firewall could be your culprit here or your antivrus (or both).
A way to check is to disable your internet connection and then remove/delete your firewall and antivirus from your system. You will have to go into the registry to remove ALL from your system so write them down (Firewall and antivirus program). Hopefully you know how to do this if not then here is a small brief:
On your system that is giving you hassle:
Go to “Run” and type “Regedit”
Once in go to “Modify” and then go down the list to “Find” and type in your antivirus program and then hit “Enter”. This will bring up pages on the left and right and the program will be highlighted press the “Delete” key on your keyboard. You do not have to re-type the program in the “Find” box all you do is press keys “CTRL” plus “F” and then “Enter” to continue. Once ALL is removed, reboot your computer and install a different kind of antivirus software. Hopefully this will bring some piece of mind to your system.
