I think I've (quite accidentally) realized something...

By TonytheTiger ·
The consumers of the United States really are in the catbird seat, even if they don't realize it!

The more money our government takes from us, the less we'll be buying from everyone else... so, many countries actually have a vested interest in seeing our taxes as low as possible. If we can't afford to buy their exports, they're not going to have the money to run their expansive social programs!

That's why the rest of the G20 are nervous! THEY wanted Obama, never dreaming he'd be doing what he's doing... and now THEY'RE having buyer's remorse.

Hmmm... I'll have to mull it over some more... but I think we can find a way to use this...

Where is NoBama's support?

by jdclyde In reply to I think I've (quite accid ...

He had global support during the election, but now it seems to be now where to be found.

Allies are not rushing to join him, and enemies are laughing at him and his weakness.

Yeah, maybe if you are really nice to Iran, they will change their ways and we can all live in harmony..... and look, pigs are flying.....

It's all in

if and which liberties are valuable to you.

All humans are born wanting to do whatever they want to do.

Some of these things are things that other people seem to want to do too, so they become "the norm".

Sometimes someone wants to do something that's not within the norm and others don't like it and band together to make a law prohibiting it.

People learn that they can control other people by banding together and prohibiting undesirable behavior.

Eventually, someone bands with someone else to prohibit something YOU want to do. THAT'S when you realize how important liberty is.

Not to be a Negative Nelly

by Dumphrey In reply to It's all in

But there are other reasons as well. Americans are against socialized medicine because the big drug companies would loose 40% or more of their income. They actively oppose such legislation. Look for who looses money. If its general masses, then we can cast off a particular freedom. If it will effect the rich or powerful, the freedom must be protected.

"People learn that they can control other people by banding together and prohibiting undesirable behavior."
And corporations have learned they can buy and pressure legislation.

But, besides my note of cynicism, I think you summed up American views on freedom. We support the freedoms we approve of and "use", and oppose those that offend us or go against our own values.

some of us.

And corporations have learned they can buy and pressure legislation.

Like illegal immigrants, the perpetrators are simply taking advantage of the flaws in our system.

We support the freedoms we approve of and "use", and oppose those that offend us or go against our own values.

This American assumes that you are trying to better yourself ("your own" definition of "better" is fine) and doesn't care what you do, as long as you don't unjustly harm another.

by Oz_Media In reply to That's the difference bet ...

By what definition? Unjust through your eyes or unjust in another's?

That's where your loose mythology that you call 'VALUES' fails you.

What is just to one is unjust to another, thus law is the only determining factor of what is right or wrong, morals, values etc. don't come into it as they are already a part of the consideration of law. Law will determine what is deemed right or wrong, moral or immoral.

Not ismply how you feel compared to how someone else feels. Which is where the whole values of the people stuff becomes complete horsesh1t.

You guys hang onto all this crap as if it has any relevance.

peccadilloes of English?

by Oz_Media In reply to as long as you don't unj ...

I don't care about other pople's English, unless they offer poor English while chastizing another's. I don't claim to have great grammar, nor can I type, I can spell and I do have a good grasp of the English language but I don't claim to be an English scholar, though technically I was an English scholar.

This is all about Americans hanging onto Freedom and Liberty as if it is unique to america. I've even been told that I would not understand the concept of freedom and liberty unless I lived in America, illustrating how globally clueless the poster was. America is far from beign the only free country, in fact Americans seem to have far fewer freedoms and liberties than Canadians, Brits, Aussies or most other people living in free countries do, especially with us Canadians living with our supposed communist/socialist regime.

Perhaps it is the same but seems more restricted from the US as they are constantly bitching and complaining about losing freedoms and liberties. But having spent so much time back and forth across the borders, I can see first hand just how restricted their freedoms really are compared to my own. I think for now I'll stay in this repressive country of freedoms and liberties.

Unjust

by TonytheTiger In reply to as long as you don't unj ...

That which a person knows, or should know, is wrong, and is illegal in most civilized nations.

Examples:

Intentionally doing physical damage to a person without their knowledge or against their will (assault, murder).

Taking something that belongs to someone else (aka "STEALING") without the owner's permission.

There are others, but those two are probably the most likely to occur.
