I want to watch DVD videos

By Mike (from Canada) ·
Looks like I'm sort-of getting somewhere here.

As soon as I downloaded 1Click DVD ripper, I thought I had the ultimate solution. It converted the smallest VOB file to an AVI file with a WAV file. The only problem is that I will have to wait several hours to convert an entire DVD to AVI, and somehow mix the AVI and WAV files together. Is there a faster method I can use to watch DVD's on my computer (vob files) without requiring a high-speed processor? I only have a 200Mhz processor with 64MB ram. If there was a huge manual on the internet for free what explains how to read and decode a VOB file, please point me to it, because then I will write my own decoder in QuickBasic.

With the specifications of your system, you will never get acceptable performance out of a software DVD decoder.

What you need is a DVD decoder card.

I took a quick look at my favorite sources and did not find a card listed.

You might want to check ebay.

If you are going to limit yourself to a software solution, I suggest that you try Linux and 1 of the open source decoders.

Linux has much less system overhead than Windows and should run the process much better on your old hardware.

As a side note, even if you could write a decoder in Quick Basic, it would still require faster hardware than you have.

You would need to write your decoder in a language that compiles into very tight machine code to even approach the performance you require.

You might get by with Turbo C or Turbo Pascal.

You have probaly less than the minimum required system configuration, the 64m memory will not give you the performance you are looking for.

What you need is a DXR3 Card. This card was sold in the first dvd kits from. The one I had was from creative labs. It is a hardware decoder. It has been hacked and has a pretty good following.

The Dxr3 card decodes Mpeg1 and Mpeg2 video and supports DVD video playback at resolution as high as 1600x1200 at refresh rates of up to 85 Hz and framerates of up to 30 frames/second. The card uses a VGA loopback cable to display the DVD movie on your monitor and a TV out jack for your TV.

The earler version was a DXR2 Card.

I have seen the cards on ebay. Make sure it has the loopback cable.

Good Luck Lee
