IE security zones locked server 2003

By andrew.vlasek ·
We have a windows 2003 domain based network. A program called golds disk was run and it locked down security settings. Unfortunately it locked IE security zones and we cannot figure out how to unlock them. I am not sure if it was a regedit or GPO edit because it is effecting all our servers and was run on only one. Any help would be appreciated.

Possible Fix

by toughguy000 In reply to IE security zones locked ...

Many spyware programs and "home page hijackers" alter the default home page and other key user settings in Internet Explorer. These malicious programs often set certain Registry keys/values in order to lock users out from those Internet Explorer settings, preventing them from reclaiming control of their browsers.

Also, some users of SpyBot Search & Destroy have checked the following boxes on the "Immunize" page within SpyBot Search & Destroy, not realizing that they are effectively locking themselves out of those Internet Explorer settings:

* "Lock IE start page setting against user changes (current user)"
* "Lock IE control panel against opening from within IE (current user)"

Although users can easily undo these changes within SpyBot Search & Destroy, many don't realize that those boxes caused the problem in the first place and remain frustrated and confused. Also, the user may have uninstalled SpyBot Search & Destroy before even realizing there was a problem.

Solution: Open notepad, copy and insert the following, then save the file as a .reg file:

; Note: this file removes Restrictions on the use of Internet Explorer.

; Unlock IE Start Page

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions]

; Un-hide Internet Options tabs

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel]

; Unlock Web Settings

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel]

; Unlock Search Customization

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Infodelivery\Restrictions]

; Unlock IE Control Panel

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions]

; Don't Use Custom Stylesheet

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Styles]
"Use My Stylesheet"=dword:00000000
