ie won't dowload

By artzelda ·
internet explorer won't download files from a number of sites, but netscape does. IE downloads from Windows Update site works. IE goes directly to the file download progress window and skips the files download dialog window (skips "save to disk or run from here" window)I have tried everything I can think of, even reinstalling. Cleared cache, temp files, hosts files, checked with different ISP's performed tracert and ping, cleared IE keys in registry, etc. Running Win98 1st ed. Any ideas!!! Microsoft support and KB unable to find solution. Would like to avoid WIn98 reinstall.

you could always hold down shift and click on the links or right click on the links and hit save target as. Depending on where you are d/ling from, I have had some sites with javascripts that would mess up things I tried to d/l and that was the quickest way around it.

While I don't have an answer I do want some clarification on your problem. It just may be that we are having the same problem. Do you get a 'Unable to find server' or 'Unable to find path' error when you try to open or download any non-html/text files (i.e. .doc, .zip, etc.)?

If so we have recently had an outbreak of this problem at the plant I work at (close to 100 cases in the past 1 1/2 months).

Currently we are collecting data to try to find the root cause.

Warning! This is a band-aid not a fix!!

First go to Internet Options, Temporary Internet Options, Delete Files (click the Delete all offline content option)

Next Clear History.

Give it a try, if it doesn't work close IE and go into Windows Explorer and manually delete all of the cookies, files and archive folders. If a folder keeps recreating itself open Task Manager and kill all IEXPLORER.EXE processes.

Again, try downloading again. If it still doesn't work, try a repair of IE (this has never worked for mebut coworkers claimed it has for them.

The last option is to Restore previous/Uninstall and reinstall.

Again this is just a band-aid that appears to work for only a limited time.

One last thing, if caching isn't all that important to you, you may want enable the 'Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed' option under Security on the Advanced tab of Internet Options. This is the latest thing we are trying with sucess to date.

Again, the above does not 'fix' the problem as we have not yet identified the culprit but does provide relief.

My error message said 'Unable to find server'and I had already performed what you have suggested and it didn't work. I finally had to reformat and reinstall all my applications. This is when I found the cause of the problem. I had installed all my programs and after each installation I checked to make sure that IE5.5 worked properly. My last installed application was Mcafee Antivirus and the inability to download problem reoccurred. Uninstalling Mcaffee did not solve the problem. I hadto reformat all over again. This time I installed Mcafee immediately after I had installed Windows and them installed the remaining applications. This solved the problem. Mcafee Antivirus or the subsequent updates must change something in the registry or some file somewhere that creates this problem. I don't know what is changed but this process of installing the Mcafee Antivirus up front did solve my problem. I spoke to Microsoft about this and they said they will investigate and were happy I told them about this. They suggested that I use a program such as Clean Sweep to monitor my installations so that I can go back and see what is actually modified if I ever have a problem again, which I have done. So far I have updated Mcafee Antivirus twice and the problem has not reoccurred.
