You can try this,Go to the Control Panel and select Add/Remove programs,in the open pane look for IE5,If there highlight and then click the Add/Remove button,if there is a pop up window, click on the to repair install and follow the on screen instructions.
This can also be done in Windows Explorer and locating C:\Windows\Applications and look for ie5.01dom.exe and double click to install setup-

I tried your suggestion,,,it still stalls at the same spot. After several minutes, it gives a setup.CAB file is corrupt and it will not recover from it.

Perhaps you tried to instal it several times, right? You should remove the incomplete version installed and start all over.
Go to control panel, Add/remove programs, search if it is listlled, high light it and press add/remove.
Press instal, insert your disk and follow the instruction to finish.
If this is not the answer, reinstal W98 then IE5.5.
Good luck

Still the same problem after uninstalling IE5.01,,,after several minutes of the stalled installation, it gives an error of setup CAB file corupted and will not recover. Not sure if I want to re-install win98 due to possible loss of other applications.

You may want to Restore to IE4,then update the browsers in sequence, downloading IE5.5 before you downloaded IE5.01,the system is trying to install over a updated version that is later than the install files that is being accessed.hope this helps

Good thinking, I tried that, but what ever I do? It stalls at DirectX and will go no further. The last couple tries, it says that it is missing a file in windows\msdownloads\???,, but the file is there….

I had a simmilar problem.First think twice about installing IE5.5 . I had a terrible time getting it out of my system and when i did it corrupted alot of files. 5.0 works great.Try downloading microsofts new virtual machine then reinstalling direct x 7.0 Then go to add and remove programs and highlight Internet Explorer 5.0 or 5.0 and select remove then choose restore previos version then reboot and try downloading 5.0 again just in case your original download was corrupt

Try this… Go into the file called Window Update Setup Files (it is usually in the root on your C drive.)
Delete everything that has “ie” on the front of it (I deleted everything). FYI. When you go to the MS update site and download IE5.5. You start out downloading a setup file. Well it gets saved into this directory along with all of your .CAB files. By deleting all of the ie files in here you will be getting rid of any corrupt files.
Next, go back to the MS update site and re-download IE5.5. (Now the newest is IE 5.5 SP1).
Here is a new trick I found… I deleted everything in the Window Update Setup Files folder. Went to the site and downloaded the 5.5 If you pay attention when you are answering the questions (Where do you want to install it…etc) there is a button “Advanced”. If you select this… you can “Just Download” the files. It will not go through the installation phase. BUT… you will download all of the files (~30MB). Then later you can install IE from your hard drive… you go into the Window Update Setup Files folder and select ie5setup.exe. Now if this works well for you… try and copy those files to a CD and now you have your own copy of IE5.5
Now here is another thing that you can do… contact Mircosoft and tell them you have a hard time downloading IE from their website. They will send you a CD (The last two times for IE4 and IE5.5 they sent it to me for free).
