I'm in the market for a laptop.

By boxfiddler Moderator ·
One of my primary wants is a heavy duty keyboard. I've used HP and Acer and am happy with both in relation to keyboard. I have lead fingers and both hold up well to them.

Gateway has a crap keyboard - it gives when I type.

I'd like to know what the other options re: keyboards are. How are those Dell, Lenovo, and whoever else keyboards?

Other experiences welcome. Tales and testaments, please.

Well Boxy look at things realistically

Vista comes on a DVD not several CD's so that's 4.7 GIG before you actually install the OS. Easily double that amount of space for the installed OS and that is 14.1 GIG before you add any Applications so 35 GIG isn't unreasonable for the Recovery Partition, the Installed OS and software as well as the lost space due to formatting a HDD into several different partitions.

It after all only leaves 21 GIG for the Applications installed and to actually load them from the Recovery Partition. The greatest part of the mess is related to Vista. And you already knew that it is big consumes masses of System Resources so what are you complaining about?

As for wiping and reloading without a Recovery Partition all I can say is

Sorry Davette I can not allow you to do that. After all you need the recovery partition so you can press the wrong keys and blow away all your Data don't you?

Boxy dump the Trial Version of 2007 Orifice as it's next to useless. You don't want it anyway as way too many people fail to remember to change the Native Format that it saves documents in so that they are readable by everyone. OO 3 is much more reliable honestly.

You cannot stop me.

No software but the bloatware that HP added. Special order unit. I'll add what I want.

I called 5 or 6 - don't remember anymore - small shops that cater to business. This particular shop was the only one willing to deal with me and attempt to find what I wanted. They got very, very close.
HP was the only manufacturer they deal with that was willing to provide a non-glare 17" inch screen. HP stays on my list of laptop folks I'm happy with.

The keyboard is firm. One of my primary reqs. I'm as happy as I can be, running Vista. Blech to Vista.

But Davette

I only have 1 TB of HDD Space on my new Desktop unit and the currently installed Software is taking up 121.7 GIG so I need to make room for all my Data.

As for HP being the only place that would sell to a Reseller something that is a common unit what can I say you get Pathetic Service in the US? That is just abysmal.

On the up side I've got a couple of customers waiting for the new Benq NB's when they come out in about 6 months time just the idea of 7 hours from a battery was enough to sell them on it. Now I wonder just how close to the listed Specs at the last trade show that I went to they will actually be.
