Important research question!

By Ldyosng ·
What is the most interesting or high-tech thing you have ever fixed using a low-tech solution. For example, using the eraser at the end of a pencil to clean contacts (don't laugh - a guy at HP taught me that trick!) or holding in headlights with duct tape or stopping bleeding with crazy glue . . .

Oh..silly female ones count?

by maecuff In reply to Silly female ones...

Well then.. There was a commercial, years ago, for a device called a Topsy Tail, which made it easy to invert a ponytail. I thought it was pretty cool, but I didn't want to spend the 19.99 they wanted for a little handle with a loop at end. So, I made one out of a coat hanger, and it worked just fine. In fact, after 10 or so years, I still use my makeshift topsy tail.

More black ink tricks

by Ldyosng In reply to Silly female ones...

I thrashed my (black) stocking just before going on stage one night, and colored my leg with black marker to hide the damage.

My brother, who was working at a trade show at the time, airbrushed his shirt to cover a stain the hotel laundry had been unable to remove.

WD-40 is great for removing stickers and the residue they leave behind.

Use the shank of a screwdriver to smooth rough spots in aluminum. You'll be amazed how well this works!

Another silly female one

Back to the ubiquitous pencil eraser - it makes the perfect emergency replacement for a missing post-type pierced earring back. Of course you have to bite it off the pencil, but pencils are usually far cheaper than earrings!

Use womens clear nail polish as thread compound.

It keeps small fine machine screws from loosening on such things as glasses or anything else where screws may come undone for a variety of reasons; usually vibration.

Eraser tricks...

by geekchic In reply to Important research questi ...

I recently used an eraser to clean the rollers on an HP printer. It wouldn't pick up the paper so I just took an eraser (on the end of a pencil) and just kept erasing the "gunk" on the roller until it was clean again. The roller was way down inside the printer would have been a pain to disassemble It was completely "white" from paper fibers when I started and was back to black when I finished. Erase-erase-erase and a little canned air....repeat!

on my cell phone

by jdclyde In reply to Eraser tricks...

my cell would not hold a charge for more than 5 hours. I took the battery off and noticed that the connections were far from copper color.

Used an eraser on the cell and the battery and it now will last a day and a half.

Because of the poor connection, it must not have been getting properly charged in the first place.

worked on my home phone too....

by geekchic In reply to on my cell phone

My "walk phone" (as my sister-in-law calls it) wouldn't charge and I used the "eraser" on the contacts on the base and the cordless phone and now it is fine!
