    Intermittant Corrupt attachments

    Locked

    by dlag ·

When sending attachments, files are becoming corrupt intermittantly. It may take 5 tries or 1 to send a good file. I have replaced the switch and router twice. I’ve sent thru both godaddy and hotmail. Brighthouse has verified that the connection and modem is good. I’ve run a ping -t and have not seen any packet loss. It all started when electric went out in the building, I have ups’s on all equipment so no damage was done. I even tried using a laptop that was not connected during the outage. Any suggestions?

The file could have been corrupted when the power failed,

So you may need to find a known good backup.
What kind of attachment, and what size, are you sending?
It could be something your email provider is blocking, or it may be that the size is too
      large.

In reply to The file could have been corrupted when the power failed,

Files are checked before sending and are not showing corruption. Multiple files, various sizes, from 100kb to 5mb, various types, word, publisher, pdf etc, some created before the outage some after the outage. Check with email provider file size is not the issue and ports were changed from 25 to 3535 and 80 and files are not being blocked.

If the files aren’t showing corruption, then that only leaves network
issues such as lost connections, etc. The port number shouldn’t make
that much difference, unless you happen to be hitting at a time when
a lot of users are trying to send email.
Have you noticed any “glitches” when doing other internet tasks such
as web browsing, downloading updates? There could be a quality of
        service issue.

Actually with the new equipment the network is running faster. The only glitch is with an old XP machine that some people are having problems connecting to and have to reboot to connect to it. I’m thinking its the machine as all other network connections are working. There was an issue with signal loss from Brighthouse but that was resolved and they claim that all is well on their side and I had them retest the modem. I’m thinking of bringing in my brother’s clearwire to test with but that would be my last ditch effort.

      Is this from 1 computer

      by oh smeg ·

In reply to Intermittant Corrupt attachments

Or from several across the network.

if it’s from the one system it could be something as simple as a failing Ethernet Cable/Run to a straight Hardware failure where something is failing.

If it’s across different machines in the network you have to look at the actual network or the Internet Connection. Noise on the line either ADSL or Cable can cause Data Corruption and the way I would check that is to download some file and see if it’s corrupted.

Its across the network. Downloads are woking fine. Its only uploads that are getting corrupted. I’ve switched cables and tried different ports on the switch and router. I’ve also replaced the built in nic with a pci and a usb nic and still had the problem.

      its the NIC issue

slot in PCI or USB NIC to that old win xp machine it should fix the issue.

I plan on doing that if my network problems are solved and it still acts up.

I’ve seen this previously with a Noisy ISP Line

      by oh smeg ·

In reply to Intermittant Corrupt attachments

The Line from the ISP gets a lot of Noise on it from a bad connection somewhere in the system out of your control and everything gets shot to hell.

I’ve had this twice in the past couple of weeks here after a lot of rain the ISP’s System gets waterlogged and stops providing a clear signal. Starts with a slow down in Data Transfers and then can lead to a complete Drop Out of the service. The first time it happened here the ISP insisted that the Modem had died so they would post out a new one and it would be here in 10 days. Excellent Service. 😀

Anyway 4 hours latter one of their vans pulled up outside the place and said that they had a Network Outage in the area and it was narrowed down to one of 12 poles now. The Net was back up within 30 minutes after that and then exactly a week latter the same thing happened again. Again I was told that the Modem had failed but this time they would send a Tech out. 40 minutes latter I got a phone call from them telling me that the area was out again.

Seems that their system being up for quite some time now is breaking down as Seals are failing and allowing rain to penetrate their system. Cold also has a similar effect.

I have Brighthouse checking the lines but have found nothing so far but I’m going to get them to replace my cables as they are 8 years old. Interestingly when I tested the upstream speed it was between 200 to 360 instead of the 512 I’m supposed to have. So now I have ammunition to force them to find the cause of my signal loss.

Brighthouse has finally admitted that the problem is on their side and will have to replace equipment tonight and change settings. It only took 4 weeks to resolve. Thanks everyone for your suggestions.
